Luke Littler hammers Ryan Searle at World Matchplay

Luke Littler stormed through to the second round of the World Matchplay with a 10-2 rout of Ryan Searle.
Littler, the second seed at Blackpool's Winter Gardens, looked like a man in a hurry as he raced into a 6-0 lead.
And, although Searle was able to get on the board late on, there was never going to be any way back against Littler, who averaged nearly 109.

'I was well up for tonight,' Littler said on Sky Sports. 'I wanted that win, to get that winning feeling and I've done it in some standard.'
After revealing earlier this week he had failed his driving theory test for a fourth time, Littler said he has not been doing his homework for that as he has been keeping his focus on his game, adding: 'I've got a competition to focus on.'
He said: 'I've been practising so much. Obviously I've not put much on social media, but I've been at home putting the hours in, hours and hours, and I'm glad it's paid off tonight.'
World number four Stephen Bunting survived a dogfight with Ryan Joyce to advance with a 10-8 victory.

Joyce came from 8-4 down to level the contest at 8-8 when Bunting appeared to be distracted while looking to close out from 45, and was then a whisker away from going 9-8 up as he narrowly missed double five.
Bunting responded with a 180 and then checked out from 41 to secure his progress, but could not hide his frustration.
'I'm so disappointed,' he said. 'We had a battle last year. Thankfully I've not gone the distance this year and I've saved a bit of energy for the next round. We go on, we're in the next round.'

Fifth seed Jonny Clayton survived a tough contest against Martin Schindler to prevail 10-7, despite the German putting up better numbers for much of the contest.
Clayton's average was 99.60 compared to Schindler's 103.45 but the Welshman picked his moments to advance.
'I am here, I want to win this tournament,' Clayton said. 'Hopefully it is going to be my week. I love it when I pass the first round.'

Earlier 13th seed Gary Anderson saw off Luke Woodhouse 10-5 despite a spectacular 167 checkout from the Englishman.
Four seeds were sent home during Sunday's afternoon session as further shocks followed Saturday's exits of top seed Luke Humphries and eighth seed Nathan Aspinall.
Seventh seed Damon Heta fell to Andrew Gilding in a contest that went to overtime, with Gilding eventually prevailing 12-10 after a late fightback came to nothing for Heta.
Gilding advances to face Dirk van Duijvenbode, who saw off 10th seed Rob Cross 10-8 after rallying from 6-2 down in a remarkable contest.

Warrington's Luke Littler sets up semi-final showdown in Blackpool

Warrington's Luke Littler reaches the World Matchplay darts semi-finals in Blackpool for the very first time. The world champion fired a record-break 18 maximums to see off Andrew Gilding 16-14 at Blackpool's Winter Gardens. The 18 year old was on course for a regulation win after opening up a sizeable lead in the quarter-final, first at 12-8 and again at 14-9. But Gilding responded by winning three consecutive legs and pegged him back to 15-14, but the teenager held his nerve for a 16-14 success. In doing so, the Nuke set a new Matchplay record by hitting 18 maximums to set up a semi-final showdown. Speaking to Sky Sports, Littler reacted to his victory: "That last leg I just had to stay focused and get over the line. "He won a few on the bounce when I was sat on 15 legs but I just had to do a professional job in the end. "I didn't really panic. "Andrew started to win a few legs, but that last leg against the darts as well, I just had to get over the line. "Andrew does what he does. He never goes out of rhythm. It's the same throw by throw and try and match him." The teenager will now go on to face Josh Rock in the semi-finals in Blackpool tonight (26 July). It's after the Northern Irishman beat 2023 runner-up Gerwyn Price 16-11. It's expected to be an exciting clash as Littler and Josh Rock prepare to put their friendship to one side and deliver 'fireworks'! The Blackpool Winter Gardens are intrinsically linked with the World Matchplay darts tournament, which has been held annually in the Empress Ballroom at the venue since its inception in 1994, with only one exception in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This prestigious event is a highlight of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) calendar, and the Winter Gardens' iconic status and historic architecture contribute to the tournament's unique atmosphere and ambiance.

Cerny nears transfer move to new club after Rangers loan

The Czech international has no future at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg, who need to trim their squad ahead of the new season in Germany. He impressed hugely at Rangers last season where he netted 18 goals in total in 47 starts in all competitions. Six of those strikes were in Europe, including two in Istanbul when Rangers secured an excellent 3-1 win at Fenerbahce. Read more: And now Turkish rivals Besiktas have made their move to land the 27-year-old on another loan spell from his German club, with an option to buy. Rangers were priced out of the market to bring Cerny back to Glasgow, with reports Wolfsburg were looking for at least £10 million for him to return to Rangers. And he's set to resume his career in Turkey with ambitious Besiktas.

Jonny Clayton reveals emotive message from his wife that reignited his darting drive

Welsh star has been wonderful at Winter Gardens and just two games from grabbing World Matchplay glory Jonny Clayton has revealed the emotive family message which has reignited his darting drive. ‌ The Welsh star is into the semi-finals of the Betfred World Matchplay with the hunger back and the desire to rejoin the elite. ‌ Clayton suffered a career lull after the passing of his father John a couple of years and had a period when he simply had no interest in the game as it him him hard. ‌ But the 50-year-old is showing his flair again and could cap the stunning revival with a magical success in the Winter Gardens. Clayton said: 'I don't think I've hit top gear. I think I have produced better darts than I have done this week, but I'm back on the practise board, that's something I haven't done for probably a year and a half. We all know two years ago with the family with dad passing, darts was nowhere near. 'I just didn't want to play. But I've got a smile back on my face, I'm trying hard again, I'm back on the practise board. I've got two kids that want me to do well. My wife is like: John, dad has gone, but you can still make a name for yourself and that is massive, there's belief from elsewhere. ‌ 'I just want to do well. I want to be back. I want to be one of the elite players, I want to be back in the Premier League. When you are in there, you've done something right and that's that's where I belong. 'Maybe I felt down on darts and whatever, but I got the hunger back. I want to be one of the best, I really do. it hurts that I'm from world number five to nine, obviously with the money off the rankings here, but I'm climbing back up slowly and I want to be with it with the elite. 'When you're there people respect you a little bit more than what they do if you refer that further down the rankings. If you're not playing well, no matter where you are in the rankings, people pick up on that. But if you're playing well, that might be a step in the right direction and people are thinking: I have to play well against him.' An al-Wales final remains a possibility with Gerywn Price surging in the opposite side of the draw. Clayton faces resurgent James Wade in the last-four with The Machine purring and going into the game claiming he's amonst the the best players to ever walk the planet in the past 20 years. The Ferret said: '100 per cent. Look at his records. What is he, the third best dart player on earth? The fourth? 'What he's done you can't take that away from him. That guy has done everything. I think to myself: I've got a massive game, he's playing really well, he's got all the experience. I've got some but nothing compared to James. 'We practise a lot together me and James and, you watch him, he's hungry again. James being hungry is a different kettle of fish. He's fantastic.'
