2026 Vanquish Volante Drive: The Aston Martin of Aston Martins

Posh, high-performance coupes and convertibles have long been Aston Martin's stock in trade. Modern Aston Martin's pursuit of growth—part of its quest for profitability—has seen the brand expand into sports cars, supercars, SUVs, and ultra-low-production variants thereof. But ultrafast, ultraluxe, and ultralovely grand touring coupes and convertibles remain at the brand's core. Cars like the new Vanquish, which arrived last fall as a stunning coupe, and now the Vanquish Volante, its open-top counterpart. Both stand as the ultimate expression of Aston Martin–ness.
That means the Vanquish occupies a loftier perch than the thematically similar DB12, which also is available in Volante form. Differences versus its penultimate sibling can be summarized as: size, style, and motivation. Befitting its status, the Vanquish is the most grandly proportioned of Aston Martin's grand tourers. It is 6.5 inches longer overall, and its wheelbase extends 3.1 inches inches further than the DB12's. All of that extra wheelbase is situated between the base of the windshield and the front axle, as the front of the car effectively stretches forward, a visual totem of the Vanquish's other great differentiator: its V-12 engine, which nestles entirely behind the front axle.

The twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V-12 is a fresh design, even as this engine configuration dwindles to a tiny dot in the firmament of modern powertrains. But it burns more brightly than ever, boasting 64 more horses than Aston's last V-12, its 823 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque sent rearward to an eight-speed ZF transaxle, which incorporates an electronic differential. Unleashing that much thrust on public roads (particularly in the crowded environs of New York City) is a challenge, and for a while, we're only able to delve partway into the accelerator's long travel. After crossing the Hudson, we succumb to brief bursts on the Palisades Parkway. They reveal a ferociously reactive powertrain that lets loose a refined roar when provoked. We flap the paddles to extend the music, which is more vocal in Sport than in the standard GT mode, although you can also switch to the louder exhaust mode via a button on the center console.
Far outside the city at last, we're able to give the Vanquish Volante more leash. The ZF gearbox—a torque-converter automatic rather than a dual-clutch—manages to be both ultraquick and supersmooth. Powering out of corners or pummeling empty straights, the V-12 just pulls and pulls, with tremendous torque across a wide band—max grunt is available from 2500 rpm. Even at go-directly-to-jail speeds, there's still so much more. Aston claims a top speed of 214 mph.
Carbon-ceramic brakes, which were optional on the DBS, are standard on the Vanquish. With just one set of hardware to tune for, Aston's engineers were able to dial in fantastic brake-pedal action that responds more to pressure than to travel and yet doesn't feel overly touchy. It perfectly complements the accelerator-pedal effort and even the steering heft, creating harmony among the major controls.

There are four drive modes—GT, Sport, Sport+, and Wet—as well as an Individual setting to mix and match from among them. But the changes they effect are subtle. In any mode, the steering remains perfectly weighted and more relaxed than darty. The Aston Martin–blend Pirelli P Zero PZ4s (275/35ZR-21 front, 325/30ZR-21 rear) are certainly low-profile, and yet this Aston never feels harsh, even over broken pavement—of which we encountered plenty in our drive from midtown Manhattan out to the hinterlands and back. The Vanquish is utterly composed over lumpy, twisting two-lanes tackled at extralegal speeds, the chassis tuning allowing enough compliance to keep from upsetting the car. This is a grand tourer, not a racer.

Simon Newton, Aston's director of vehicle performance, says that the convertible was developed alongside the coupe, and that they aimed to deliver the same driving performance between the two. They adjusted for the slight weight difference (Aston says the Volante is about 200 pounds heavier with a claimed 50/50 weight distribution) by increasing the rear spring rates and front anti-roll-bar stiffness each by 7 percent. On the subject of stiffness, the convertible adds a structural crossbrace behind the front seats, and there's extra structure across the top of the rear suspension and in the sills.
Like the coupe, the Volante's bonded-aluminum architecture is draped in carbon-fiber body panels. And what panels they are. The Vanquish is, quite objectively, a stunner, no less so in Volante form than as a coupe. The compact-stacking fabric top doesn't interrupt the graceful bodywork when tucked away, and it stows in just a claimed 14 seconds, a feat that can be performed on the move at low speeds. Raise the top (in 16 seconds), and it provides eight layers of insulation from the world outside.

The world inside is leather lined and beautifully finished. Like the coupe, the Volante is strictly a two-seater. Those seats are comfortable, and without over-large side bolsters, ingress and egress aren't needlessly challenging. Behind them, small coves can accommodate a small backpack or handbag.
You sit deep in this car, with the beltline up around shoulder level and a fairly high cowl. The slope of the dashboard, scooped-out door panels, and a console that's lower than in the DB12 keep the interior from feeling confining, however. The long hood falls away from view, which can be somewhat disconcerting when parking in close quarters, but there is a dedicated hard button to instantly summon the parking cameras (with a choice of views), which is helpful.

Aston has retained physical switchgear in the Vanquish, and that's part of what makes this car so welcoming to the driver. Its most future-techy aspect is the standard integration of Apple CarPlay Ultra. The system takes over not just the central touchscreen but the instrumentation display as well. And while you don't have to hop out of it to operate climate controls or other screen-based vehicle systems, it was otherwise unimpressive. We found the system to be glitchy, Siri to be obtuse, and the phone-based navigation to be useless when we were out of cell range. We ended up quitting out of it in favor of the native navigation.
Really, the Vanquish Volante is about classicism, not the latest gadgetry. The beauty of long-hood-short-deck proportions, the sound and fury of a V-12 engine, and the experience of open-air driving—those are what's central to this car. These desirable elements make the Vanquish Volante the grandest of grand tourers, one that comes at an equally rarefied price: $489,700 (inclusive of destination and, ahem, gas-guzzler tax). The upcoming supercars are sure to be still more expensive, but while you can pay more for an Aston Martin, this grandest grand tourer strikes us as the ultimate Aston Martin.

The company reported a decline in both sales and profit. Revenue was down 12% to $22.5 billion, and adjusted net income was down 23% to $1.39 billion, or $0.40 per share. Those numbers actually topped a muted revenue estimate at $22.13 billion, while the bottom-line consensus matched the results at $0.40. Tesla's problems have been well-documented at this point. CEO Elon Musk's turn in the political spotlight seemed to backfire after his relationship with President Donald Trump went sour. Due in part to Musk's involvement with politics, the brand has become unappealing in the eyes of some potential buyers, leading to a 16% decline in automotive revenue. Sales have plunged in Europe, and the company is losing ground to more affordable Chinese EVs. One seemingly bright spot Musk has a long history of overcoming weak results by telling investors what they want to hear on the earnings call, including making big promises about its robotaxi network and other initiatives in autonomy like its Optimus robot. He seemed to do that again on the latest earnings call, with some comments about the more affordable model he has long promised, which some have dubbed the Tesla Model 2. Musk said that the company started production of the vehicle in June and is ramping up production now. He added: "The goal with those products was not to negatively impact revenue or gross margin, but just to make a car that everyone loves and wants at a more affordable price." Musk has long argued that price competition was one of the biggest headwinds facing the company, but the brand crisis seems to have overshadowed that. By introducing its own lower-priced model, Tesla may end up cannibalizing its more expensive vehicles. Customers may be choosing between a more expensive Tesla and that lower-priced model, rather than another brand. The new vehicle is just a cheaper Model Y, rather than a brand-new vehicle model. The robotaxi initiative The biggest reason Tesla has maintained its premium valuation even as sales and profits have tumbled is that investors believe that Tesla's robotaxi network could go mainstream, fulfilling Musk's long-term vision. However, the robotaxi has gotten off to only a modest start after launching in June, and it seemed to get less attention on Tuesday's earnings call, though Musk reminded the audience: "As you can tell, autonomy is the story." Management said that robotaxis in Austin, Texas have topped 7,000 miles with no significant safety interventions. The company is aiming to launch the robotaxi in the San Francisco Bay Area next. Tesla needs growth in its core business Investors have bid up Tesla stock on hopes for its initiatives in robotaxis and more affordable vehicles, but the company needs to return to growth in selling EVs for the stock to be successful over the long term. The decline in EV sales is a reflection of a backlash against Tesla's brand. The company is also expected to struggle over the next few quarters due to the elimination of the EV tax credit and a change in other federal policies that supported EV adoption. The company also faces a $300 million effect from tariffs. Tesla could get back on track, especially if the robotaxi network takes off. But the current valuation in the stock leaves little room for upside if it does, especially given the persistent challenges in EV sales. While a more affordable vehicle might be a step in the right direction, it seems more likely to undercut demand for Tesla's more expensive vehicles, rather than competing with alternatives. Causation? Correlation? Coincidence? It's hard to tell, but the fact of the matter is that Boston drivers were once again declared the worst this year, and the city has extended its deal to let AI manage its terrible traffic. So it's probably no surprise to discover that, according to Visual Capitalist, using Insurify data, Massachusetts has the highest rate of car crashes in the country. Based on the number of accidents per total number of drivers, the Bay State is on top the leaderboard with a score of 6.1%. And whatever's affecting Massachusetts drivers seems to be spreading throughout New England, since New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine were ranked 2 through 4 with accident rates of 5.8%, 5.6%, and 5.4%, respectively. The state with the lowest accident rate was Michigan, at a mere 1.7%. Another oddity of the numbers: Fewer crashes don't seem to make an impact on states' insurance rates. Michigan has the highest insurance rates in the country, with Mitten State motorists paying some 80% more than the nationwide average. Leading the way was the Kia Soul EV, while the Chevrolet Bolt EUV finished third, the Volkswagen ID.4 came in fifth, and Chevy's Bolt EV came out in the eighth position. (The Bolt EUV is the inexpensive and spacious crossover version of the Bolt EV.) It's a guess, but perhaps people were still getting used to the instant torque and quick acceleration of electric vehicles? Anyway, filling out the list were the MazdaSpeed3 (No. 2), Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (No. 4), Jeep Wrangler YJ (No. 6), Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid (No. 7), Ram 2500 (No. 9), and Chrysler Voyager (No. 10). Oddly, Insurify reported on the same topic in 2023, with completely different results. That year, using the percentage of drivers with a prior at-fault accident on their records, the list of "Car Models with the Most Accidents" had exactly zero of the models mentioned in 2024. The 2023 vehicles were, starting with the most accident prone, the Audi S4, Scion iA, Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai Veloster N, Toyota GR86, Subaru WRX, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Chevrolet Silverado LD, Kia Niro, and Subaru Impreza. These Cars Had The Most Fatal Accidents Of course, the word "accident" can cover a broad range of possibilities, and a minor fender-bender isn't anything like a serious crash. Ranking cars based on the number of fatalities per billion miles driven, the vehicle most likely to leave someone dead in an accident is — according to iSeeCars — the Hyundai Venue. Following the Venue are the Chevrolet Corvette, Mitsubishi Mirage, Porsche 911, and Honda CR-V Hybrid. Now, you've probably noticed one big name missing from that previous discussion: Tesla. Despite the occasional fiery Cybertruck crash, and a reputation for having some of the country's worst drivers, the brand was conspicuously absent from the Insurify data. And while ISeeCars noted that Tesla as a brand had the highest rate of fatal accidents — with Kia, Buick, Dodge, and Hyundai following — Tesla's Model Y and S were only #6 and #21 in the rankings on iSeeCars' list of vehicles. The Mitsubishi Mirage G4, Buick Encore GX, Kia Forte, and Buick Envision closed out the top 10. You can see how some of this happens, since the Corvette, 911, and Teslas are high-performance cars likely to be traveling fast, while the Mitsubishis, Forte, and Encore GX are on the smaller side. So they're all likely to lose out in a crash with a big truck or SUV. The good news? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the number of annual auto fatalities fell by 3.8% in 2024, with the total dropping under 40,000 for the first time in four years. A car expert has revealed which electric vehicles could soon lap Tesla, whose reign as a tastemaker and EV pioneer has appeared to be on shaky ground over the first half of 2025. At the beginning of the year, InsideEVs' Andrei Nedelea broke down the best Tesla alternatives for consumers who are intrigued by the benefits of driving an EV. According to Nedelea, a competitive EV market may also pique the interest of drivers who already own a Tesla. "Although [Tesla's] EVs are still among the best, competing automakers have caught up and have even surpassed Tesla in some areas," Nedelea wrote. "Buying the best EV isn't as simple as just loading up the Tesla site and ordering one anymore." For drivers interested in a Model 3, Nedelea recommended considering the BMW i4, which features a range of up to 307 miles on a single battery charge. One downside, however, is that the BMW i4 is heavier than the Model 3, so its navigation on winding roads isn't as smooth. The aerodynamic Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the upgraded Polestar 2 are other options to look into. For Model Y enthusiasts, Nedelea suggested considering the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Polestar 4. Those interested in a Model S may appreciate the BMW i5, Audi A6 e-tron, and Lucid Air. Nedelea also listed pricier models such as the Porsche Taycan. Meanwhile, automakers such as Rivian, Polestar, BMW, Kia, and Ford offer alternatives for consumers interested in a Model X or a Cybertruck. Nedelea provided a more detailed breakdown of the pros and cons, but regardless of the EV brand, there are undeniable perks to saying goodbye to a gas-powered vehicle, including reduced maintenance and energy costs. Installing solar panels can further maximize these savings because charging with them at home is cheaper than using public stations or the grid.
