Fresh caste survey as per law, says Karnataka CM

The Hindu16-06-2025
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the fresh socio-educational and economic survey had been taken up as there were objections from both the upper and downtrodden communities to the earlier survey.
Speaking to press persons in Davangere on June 16, Mr. Siddaramaiah said, 'Moreover, as per Section 11(1) of the Backward Classes Commission Act, after expiry of 10 years of the report, a re-survey should be conducted. That is why re-survey had been ordered.'
The Chief Minister clarified that the general census being planned by Union Government is different from the socio-educational, economic census being conducted by the government of Karnataka. To provide social justice, knowing the socio-economic situation of the communities was necessary, and that's why the census was being conducted, he said.
He further clarified that the State Government had no qualms about the census of the Union Government. 'It is different from our socio-economic census. Moreover, the Centre has not said anything on conducting a socio-economic census. We are conducting a caste census along with the socio-economic census,' he said.

Over 95 lakh domestic tourist visits to Jammu & Kashmir during Jan-June in 2025: Government data

The figures for domestic tourist visits to Jammu and Kashmir during January-June this year stood at more than 95 lakh, according to data shared by the government. Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared the data in a written response on Monday to a query on whether the Centre is aware of the decline in tourist footfall and business losses in Jammu and Kashmir during the peak tourist season following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi also asked if any assessment was made by the government on its economic impact on local tourism-dependent stakeholders. "No such assessment has been made by the Ministry of Tourism on economic impact on local tourism-dependent stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir," Shekhawat said. The Pahalgam terror strike took place on April 22 in which 26 civilians, mostly tourists were brutally killed. India avenged the killings with Operation Sindoor under which the armed forces early May 7 decimated multiple terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK). A special discussion in the Lok Sabha on "India's strong, successful and decisive Operation Sindoor" began on Monday as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the military action against Pakistan had sent a clear message to supporters of terrorism that India was committed to defend its motherland. In his response, Shekhawat also shared year-wise tabulated data for domestic tourist visits (DTVs) and foreign tourist visits (FTVs) from 2020 to 2025. This data is provided by the state tourism department. Based on the latest information received from the Jammu and Kashmir tourism department, the number of DTVs and FTVs stood at 95,92,664 and 19,570 respectively for the period January-June of 2025. DTVs for preceding four years were -- 2,35,24,629 (for year 2024); 2,06,79,336 (2023); 1,84,99,332 (2022); 1,13,14,920 (2021) and 25,19,524 (2020). FTVs for preceding four years were -- 65,452 (for year 2024); 55,337 (2023); 19,985 (2022); 1,650 (2021) and 5,317 (2020, and for January-June period of 2025 it stood at 19,570. Shekhawat said the Ministry of Tourism has taken several steps or initiatives to promote tourism sector in the country, including in Jammu and Kashmir. On April 23, the Union tourism minister had told reporters in Delhi that some people with nefarious intentions had tried to again "incite separatism and terrorism" in the Valley and asserted that his ministry would do the best to "minimise the dent" on tourism in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the Pahalgam attack.

CM lays foundation stones for development projects in Mandya

Mandya: Chief minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth 1,146.7 crore in Maddur, Mandya district, on Monday. Speaking after inaugurating and laying the foundation stone for various projects under 16 different departments, Siddaramaiah launched a scathing counter to the BJP's claims of stalled development. "This is our answer to the BJP's false propaganda that there are no funds for development," declared the CM. "The Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited alone has undertaken Rs 560 crore worth of projects in just two years," he pointed out, challenging the BJP to list its contributions during its four-year rule in Maddur. Siddaramaiah said his govt has supported local industries by clearing long-pending power dues and sanctioning Rs 52 crore for the Mandya Sugar Factory's revival. An additional Rs 10 crore is now approved for its further development. In response to requests from the Milk Producers' Association, the govt provided a Rs 5-per-litre subsidy and continues to extend support to the dairy sector. The CM underscored the establishment of an Agricultural University in Mandya, along with necessary budget allocations, as evidence of his govt's focus on rural and agrarian progress. The CM praised Maddur MLA KM Uday. "He speaks less and works more," the CM said. He also announced govt approval for Uday's long-pending proposal for a 100-feet road project in Maddur city. DCM DK Shivakumar emphasised his deep commitment to Mandya and announced major irrigation initiatives, including Rs 500 crore for canal development and water supply to Malavalli. Highlighting Congress' welfare agenda, he cited CM Siddaramaiah's Rs 4 lakh crore budget, out of which Rs 1 lakh crore is directed toward public welfare—free electricity for farmers, 10kg rice per family, Rs 2,000 monthly for women, and youth unemployment benefits. "No other govt in India has offered such wide range of guarantees," he said. The DCM gave a firm message to JD(S) leaders. "Don't waste your time. This is Congress's time," he said. Reflecting on Maddur's rich history and leaders like SM Krishna, Shivakumar said, "Congress built this land and will build its future too. Let's rise beyond politics and support progress together." District minister Cheluvarayaswamy, ministers HC Mahadevappa, Krishna Byre Gowda, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Rahim Khan, K Venkatesh, MLA Ravi Ganiga, and MLC Dinesh Gooligowda were present. CM blames Centre Siddaramaiah accused the Union govt of neglecting farmers by failing to supply the required quantity of fertilisers. "We wrote to the Centre demanding a fertiliser supply. It's been a week with no response. I urge BJP MPs and Union ministers from Karnataka, including Mandya MP HD Kumaraswamy, to act and get the required fertilisers from the centre," he stated.

Mamata Banerjee ‘reminds' officials they work for the State not ECI

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reminded officials of the State government on Monday (July 28, 2025) that they work for the State Government not the Election Commission of India (ECI), and directed them to ensure that not a single name is removed from the voters list. Speaking at an administrative meeting in Birbhum district, Ms. Banerjee expressed her displeasure that a meeting of BLOs (Booth Level Officers) was conducted by the ECI without keeping her or the Chief Secretary in the loop. 'Remember, only after an election notification is issued does it [the State machinery] come under the Election Commission. Before that it [State machinery] is under the State Government, and after the election it returns to the control of the State Government. Remember, you work under the State government,' the Chief Minister said. The Chief Minister's remarks assume significance since they come as the Election Commission of India is conducting a special intensive revision (SIR) of the voters' list in Bihar. Accusing the ECI of working at the behest of the BJP, the Trinamool Congress leadership has said that it will not allow any such exercise in West Bengal. Assembly polls in West Bengal are scheduled for 2026. Blatant interference Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said the Chief Minister's remarks are nothing short of a blatant attempt to interfere in the democratic process and undermine the sanctity of free and fair elections. 'By openly reminding BLOs that they are 'State Government Employees' and warning them against following the ECI's directives, she is indirectly threatening those responsible for ensuring a transparent electoral process,' he added. On July 26, the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, organised a divisional level training session and meeting with election officials in Kolkata. The training session was organised for Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), supervisors and BLOs of several Assembly constituencies. The Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal remained non-committal on when a SIR may be notified for the State and said it was 'not in his jurisdiction.' 'If the SIR happens, the ECI will notify. Whether a SIR will happen, when it will happen, and when it will be declared — these are not in my jurisdiction,' Mr. Agarwal said.
