Will take steps to get Katchatheevu back: EPS
AIADMK
has always stood by farmers and fishermen during difficult times right from the times of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, said party general secretary
Edappadi K Palaniswami
on Thursday.
The party will continue to fight for favourable policies for them and ensure their livelihoods are protected, he told a meeting with representatives of various fishermen and farmers' associations in Ramanathapuram on Thursday morning.
Among the demands put forth by fishermen were a solution to the arrests of Tamil fishermen by Sri Lankan navy and rescuing those languishing in Sri Lankan prisons. "I will do my best to bring the matter to the attention of the central govt and provide help in whatever way possible.
We always take problems faced by farmers and fishermen seriously and take action, unlike DMK," said EPS. He said farmers were being neglected even when they were affected by drought.
Addressing his 'Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom' campaign later in the evening at Ramanathapuram and Mudukulathur, EPS said that as many as 806 fishermen were rescued from Sri Lankan prisons, 96 from Iranian prisons, 28 from Qatari prisons, and 11 from Abu Dhabi prisons during the AIADMK period.

"Chief minister M K Stalin and DMK keep on saying they need to get back Katchatheevu, but the reality is that it was Congress who gave it away.
It was AIADMK who went to the Supreme Court under former CM J Jayalalithaa regarding the issue. We will definitely take steps to get Katchatheevu back, unlike DMK," said EPS.
Fishermen of mechanised fishing boats will get better diesel subsidies when AIADMK comes to power, and it will also be ensured that fishermen get adequate compensation during fishing ban periods, he added. EPS said the AIADMK govt was keen to set up check dams for farmers' benefits, but now farmers were suffering due to drought, especially in areas like Ramanathapuram. Earlier in the day, EPS visited a descendant of Ramnad kings, Raja Nagendra Sethupathi, in Ramanathapuram, who recently joined the party.

Trade war: 'India's ties with US have weathered many transitions,' says MEA
NEW DELHI: Even as the India-US relationship comes under strain because of President Donald Trump's trade weaponisation, the Indian govt reposed hope in bilateral ties, with the ministry of external affairs (MEA) saying on Friday that the partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges, and that India is confident the relationship will continue to move forward. "This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward," MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said. At the same time, the govt underlined the significance of the relationship with Russia calling it steady and time-tested. MEA: India and Russia have time-tested ties Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from India this week and also threatened to impose a penalty for India's oil and defence procurement from Russia. On crude imports from Russia, govt reiterated India's position that it's guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances, in securing its energy needs. On defence procurements, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said sourcing of India's defence requirements is determined solely by its national security imperatives and strategic assessments. Despite repeated provocations by Trump, India has so far avoided getting into a slanging match with Americans, focusing instead on ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade deal that it hopes will alleviate some of the President's concerns about US' lopsided trade with India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo Asked about Trump tariffs and its implications for the relationship, the official said India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values and robust people-to-people ties. On defence cooperation, Jaiswal said India has a strong defence partnership with the US that has been strengthening over the past several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-US COMPACT for the 21st century. In Feb this year, Trump and PM Modi launched a new initiative — the 'US-India COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century' — to drive 'transformative change' across key pillars of cooperation. Asked about ties with Russia, the official said India's bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. 'India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership,' added the official. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Why is Israel evacuating its employees and their families from UAE's diplomatic mission? Why is Abu Dhabi enraged with Israeli ambassador?
New Delhi: Israel has ordered the evacuation of most of the employees and their families posted at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) diplomatic mission. This decision has been taken after the National Security Council (NSC) issued a travel warning for Israelis living in the Gulf. The NSC quoted intelligence as saying that terrorist groups including Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and global jihadist groups have intensified efforts to target Israelis and Jews in the UAE. Apart from this, tensions have increased between the two countries over an 'action' of the Israeli ambassador. The UAE had expressed displeasure with Tel Aviv over the ambassador and demanded his recall. Why is Israel concerned for its citizens in UAE? The NSC said in a statement, 'We are insisting on this travel warning because we know that terrorist organizations (Iranian, Hamas, Hezbollah and Global Jihad) are increasing their efforts to harm Israel.' Israeli officials have blamed recent military operations against Iran and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza for the increased threat. Officials have expressed concern that these factors could prompt retaliatory strikes. Why has threat level increased for Israeli citizens? Security officials believe that anti-Israel provocations and the situation after the attack on Iran have increased the threat to Israeli citizens and their representatives abroad. The Israeli and UAE foreign ministries have not yet commented on the evacuation of Israeli mission staff. When were UAE-Israel relations established? The relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates were normalized in 2020 through the US-brokered Abraham Accords led by Donald Trump. This was the first such agreement between Israel and an Arab country. Earlier, like other Arab countries, the UAE did not recognize Israel. Diplomatic contacts between the two were largely informal and limited. This normalization of relations between the two countries was historic, followed by the exchange of ambassadors, establishment of embassies and cooperation in various fields including trade, tourism and security. Since then, the activism of the Israeli and Jewish community has increased in the UAE. Why is UAE furious at Israeli ambassador? The recent tension between Israel and the UAE began over Israeli ambassador Yossi Shelly, when Abu Dhabi expressed strong displeasure over one of his actions. Israeli media outlet Channel 12 News reported that Shelly crossed the red line in Abu Dhabi. According to the report, Shelly went to a bar with friends in Abu Dhabi where he behaved indecently. The report quoted the official as saying that he behaved indecently with women, which is very wrong. When the Emirati government came to know about the incident, it expressed deep displeasure with Israel in this regard. The incident was kept away from the media for several months and it is not clear whether any document of this exists or not.

Some worry, others breathe a sigh of relief: How countries are responding to new US tariffs imposed by Trump administration
US President Donald Trump announced a fresh wave of tariffs on exports from dozens of trading partners. Trump's latest tariff move sent global stock markets tumbling and prompted countries and companies to scramble to find ways to strike better deals with Washington. The new tariffs announced by the Trump administration included Switzerland's 39 percent tariff, which saw the highest tariff rates since the early 1930s. It sought more talks, as did India, hit with a 25% rate. New tariffs also include a 35% duty on many goods from Canada, 50% for Brazil, and 20% for Taiwan, which said its rate was "temporary" and expected to reach a lower figure. These tariffs are set to take effect next week and impact almost every country. While most nations are facing increased tariffs, a few are breathing a sigh of relief after securing last-minute deals. Trump's new tariff rates: Here's how some countries reacted Live Events New Zealand's Trade Minister Tom McClay called the increased tariffs unjustified after the country's exports to the US were hit with a 15% base rate, up from 10%, according to CNN. In Switzerland, the government expressed "great regret" over the US decision to impose 39% tariffs on Swiss imports, despite progress in bilateral talks and Switzerland's "very constructive stance." Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell praised the 10% tariff rate—the lowest announced by the White House—calling it a 'vindication' of how the government handled diplomacy with the US. Bangladesh called the outcome of its trade talks with the US a 'decisive diplomatic victory' after Trump announced a 20% tariff on Bangladeshi goods. The rate announced in April 2025 was 37 percent. Malaysia, which was at risk of a 24% tariff on its exports, was able to negotiate it down to 19%—a result its trade ministry described as a 'significant achievement.' Cambodia, after reaching a deal with the US, will now face a 19% tariff instead of the originally announced 49%. South Africa, facing the highest tariff rate at 30%, said discussions with the US will continue. President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that negotiations are the best path forward. Wall Street sell-off sparked by tariff onslaught Wall Street's main indexes led a global selloff on Friday as new U.S. tariffs on dozens of trading partners weighed on sentiment, while a weaker-than-expected payrolls report added to risk aversion. Just hours before the tariff deadline on Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing duties on U.S. imports from countries including Canada, Brazil, India, and Taiwan, even as countries scrambled to seek ways to strike better deals. Data showed U.S. job growth slowed more than expected in July 2025, while the prior month's report was revised sharply lower, pointing to a sharp moderation in the labor market. U.S. stocks took an immediate hit. By early afternoon on Friday (August 1, 2025), the Dow Jones Industrial Average had dropped 0.96% to 43,708.00, the S&P 500 1.21% to 6,262.88, and the Nasdaq Composite 1.65% to 20,773.64. Markets were also reacting to a disappointing jobs report. Data showed U.S. job growth slowed more than expected in July, while the prior month's data was revised sharply lower, pointing to a slowdown in the labor market. Global shares stumbled, with Europe's STOXX 600 down 1.89% on the day and 2.5% on the week, on track for its biggest weekly drop since Trump announced his first major wave of tariffs on April 2. Trump's new tariffs have created yet more uncertainty, with many details unclear. They are set to take effect on Aug 7 at 0401 GMT, a White House official said. The European Union, which struck a framework deal with Trump, is still awaiting further Trump orders to deliver on agreed-upon carve-outs, including those for cars and aircraft, EU officials said, noting that the latest executive orders did not cover these areas.
