Could Detroit Target Pending Free Agent Kyle Connor?

The Detroit Red Wings have $12 million in remaining cap space and could save it for a potential play at Michigan native Kyle Connor. The 2026 NHL Free Agent class has the potential to be the biggest in league history with some of the biggest names up for grabs. Barring a similar event to this year where all the top players re-sign, we could see a major shake up within the league. Advertisement Most hockey fans look to biggest names like Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Artemi Panarin among others on the block and salivate at the idea of their team nabbing one of the league's best. For Detroit fans, there's a name to look out for in the bunch that very well could sign with the Red Wings and that's Michigan native Kyle Connor. Winnipeg's top end winger has solidified himself as one of the most elite players in the NHL with consistent 80-90 point production and will be due for a new deal at the end of this next season. Connor is coming off a season, where he posted his second career 40-goal season and set a career-high with 97 points through 82 games. Advertisement The homecoming for the ages would be massive for the City of Detroit but it should be noted that the Jets have been able to retain their top end guys as of late. Superstar talents in Mark Scheifele and back-to-back Vezina trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck were both big name free agents at one point but both agreed to stay on and continue their hunt for a Stanley Cup. Most players throughout the NHL have Winnipeg on their no-trade list as it's so far north and experiences tough winters. However, a player like Connor, who has seen all of the best perks of being a Winnipeg Jet could opt to stay and continue playing for a Stanley Cup contender that is coming off the franchise's best season in history. It's a hard sell but if Connor chooses to at least weigh his options and make himself available for free agency next season, we can expect an all-in approach from Detroit GM Steve Yzerman. The Red Wings made several offseason moves but refrained from making too many and still find themselves with $12 million in cap space. Advertisement The annual cap hit for a player of Connor's caliber could be in the neighborhood of that exact number. Although the plan likely wasn't to allocate this money just for the chance to land Connor but it could become an idea formulating within Detroit's management team. Connor grew up in Clinton Township, Michigan and played at the University of Michigan, where he recorded 35 goals and 36 assists for 71 points through 38 games with the Wolverines. Many Michigan natives like Andrew Copp and J.T. Compher have returned home to play for the Wings and have likely planted the idea of it to Connor in passing. More Red Wings: Three Free Agents Still Available That Could Be Targets for Detroit The prospect of joining a roster like the Red Wings would be tricky as he would be leaving a bonified Stanley Cup contender in the Winnipeg Jets but Connor could be the potential last piece in a rebuild for his hometown team as they climb back to regular playoff berths and a shot at the Stanley Cup. Yzerman and company would be able to make a very appealing offer to Connor and his camp that could entice him to make the switch. Advertisement This could also happen even earlier than expected as Connor could make a gesture to the organization that drafted him in the Jets and let them know that he would not be returning the following season. This could open things up and force the Red Wings to have to part with some valuable assets but the chances are they would be the favorites to land him. Connor could prove to be very happy where he is and opt to re-sign but if he did want to be a Detroit Red Wing as a kid than he will get the chance to do so and play the role of hero as they could be ready to start contending when he joins the fold.
