'Disrespect!: Herschelle Gibbs claps back at Temba Bavuma tweets

Retired cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has clapped back at calls for him to apologise to Proteas captain Temba Bavuma, based on his past criticism of the player.
Bavuma led the national cricket team to a historic victory at the ICC World Test Championships over the weekend.
Over the years, the squad's first test captain has repeatedly come under fire over his performances on the pitch and allegations that he was appointed as part of sporting racial quotas.
Like many South Africans, Herschelle Gibbs congratulated the Proteas for their historic WTC win at Lords in London on Saturday, 15 June.
He posted on his X account: 'Well done @ProteasMenCSA .. everything went right from the toss already .. enjoy the celebrations'
While Herschelle did not single out a player in his post, many cricket fans claimed his post should have congratulated captain Temba Bavuma.
In recent years, the outspoken retired cricketer has been vocal about his criticism of the national cricket team's performance, particularly that of Bavuma.
X user @Chorky_Seane replied: 'You've dedicated the past few years to disrespecting Temba Bavuma, so I need the praise and respect to be as loud as the disrespect'.
Herschelle cheekily responded: 'Who the f**k made you god!' Herschelle Gibbs clapped back at a cricket fan who called out his past criticism of Temba Bavuma. Image via X: @hershybru
Another – @SikhoPhilani – posted about Herschelle Gibbs: 'He thinks we have forgotten how he is always happy when the team loses!', to which the 51-year-old responded in a slew of profanities.
Herschelle Gibbs's criticism of Temba Bavuma has not gone unnoticed by cricket fans.
In 2023, a sports enthusiast compared the two players, claiming that Bavuma had a better strike rate than the retired player. An annoyed Herschelle responded: 'Talk to me when he reaches 35 international 100s. Until then, take a permanent holiday on Twitter [now X]. Bye now.'
In 2024, Hershelle controversially told an X user that Temba Bavuma 'shouldn't have been in the T20 squad to start off.'
Earlier this year, Herschelle rubbished the Proteas captain again on his X account.
'Which Bavuma were you watching?' he asked another follower.
Herschelle Gibbs – who has played alongside icons like Jonty Rhodes and the late Hansie Cronje – retired from playing in 2010.
He was hailed for multiple records and achievements, including being one of only ten batsmen in ODI history to score hundreds in three consecutive innings.
He has now taken up cricket coaching and presenting.
In a post-match interview over the weekend, Temba Bavuma subtly responded to criticism of the team and his own appointment as captain, which has often been referred to as a 'quota pick.'
He said: 'We have prepared hard for this, we have worked hard for this moment. We came here with a lot of belief but also with a lot of doubters, and we are happy that we were able to play well enough to get that type of result'.
He continued: 'For us as a country, here's an opportunity for us, as divided as we are at times, to forget all of that, to rejoice in this moment and just be on.e'

BT Football Academy group stuck in Portugal set to return to CT by Sunday

CAPE TOWN - A group of 28 children from the BT Football Academy and their coaches who have been stuck in Lisbon, Portugal, are set to be back in Cape Town by the end of this week, thanks to the generosity of South Africans. They were in Spain earlier in July, taking part in an international football tournament. But on the day that they were meant to return to South Africa, they discovered they had no flights booked. ALSO READ: 'Phenomenal' South Africans band together to bring stranded football group back home Thanks to the Tracey Lange Cares Initiative, which spearheaded calls for donations, enough funds were raised to bring them home. They left for Spain on 6 July and spent a week in St Sebastian for the Donosti Cup. But when it was time to leave on 14 July, they found out they had no flights confirmed to get home. In an interview with KFM's Carl Wastie on Monday, BT Football Academy owner Brandon Timmy explained why return tickets were not secured: 'The issue that we had for our return tickets was that we had our application for our visa's processed quite late, so we only had appointments that we received from the application centre round about end of May.' The families of nine children managed to get their children and one of the coaches home this past Saturday. The remaining 25 children and three coaches have been stuck in Lisbon and reached out on social media for help. But because of an outpouring of donations, flights have been secured for the group to get home.

BT Football Academy didn't follow due process when securing trip to Spain for players

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Sport Department said that the BT Football Academy didn't follow due process when securing a trip to Spain for 34 junior players from Cape Town. The players, accompanied by four coaches, took part in an international football tournament in San Sebastian, Spain, earlier in July. But the team was abandoned when trip organisers failed to book return tickets home after the event. The stranded children and their coaches have been supported by expats living in Portugal to get them back in the country. Mackenzie said it was there that he discovered this was not the first time that BT Football Academy teams had been left in the lurch. "Was speaking with the coaches last night at dinner, they informed me this is not the first time this has happened by the way, it's the first time parents are complaining and obviously the social media campaign. They also told me a story about how they were stuck in Dubai and how they had to find money to get home at one occasion." Public donations driven by the Tracey Lange Cares Initiative have secured enough funds to pay for the group's extended stay in Lisbon, food and tickets back to Cape Town. Over the weekend, nine players and a coach arrived back home. The remaining 25 teens and three coaches still in Lisbon are set to return on Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon.

Honor and Blue Bulls announce technology device partnership

The technology and innovation company has been announced as the technology device partner, ushering in an era of technologically driven performance for the Pretoria outfit. The Blue Bulls are proud to announce global technology brand, Honor, as their exclusive technology devices sponsor. The significance of this partnership signifies the huge shift that has been happening in global sports, in which gaming tactics and technology are increasingly relying on each other to ensure the best possible team coordination and performance outcomes. The collaboration emphasises Honor's dedication to fuse useful technology with everyday life, work and play. The brand's notable 180% growth rate in 2024 and the milestone achievement of over one million units sold in South Africa demonstrate its investment and activity in the South African market. Its latest corporate strategy, the HONOR ALPHA PLAN, aims to transform the future of AI and smart technology, from digital AI agents to physical applications that will redefine human interaction with intelligent devices. As the technology partner to the Bulls, Honor will equip the team with smart technology, supporting the players and technical teams with smart devices across its extensive product range to improve their game, connect with fans and simplify their daily living. Fred Zhou, CEO of Honor Technologies Africa, expressed that, 'The Blue Bulls are a South African brand that is synonymous with sporting achievement that unites South Africans from all walks of life. The team has a great history of brilliance in on-the-field performance as well as fostering a strong relationship with communities that form part of its fanbase. As Honor, we've decided to join this family and together we intend on ushering an era of technology and innovation-driven performance and connection.' Rugby is a huge part of the lives of South Africans. Every success achieved on the pitch has a significant impact on the mood and attitude of the country. The link between this sporting culture and technological innovation can only maximise the success we've come to expect over the years. 'For us as the Bulls, this partnership with Honor entrenches our longstanding commitment to continually improve the efficacy of our team's coordination, communication and performance on and off the field. This extends beyond the players and technical staff, but to the fans who have supported this great team and who see it as an extension of themselves,' says Blue Bulls CEO, Edgar Rathbone. Seamless trust between technological innovation and people can be likened to the tact, adaptability and awareness required in the field of play. The association between performance and innovation is implicit. 'As with our recently launched HONOR 400 & 400 Pro devices which deliver steady, social-ready results every time, manifested in crisp, AI-enhanced zoom of up to 50×, the Blue Bulls player is an individual who stays steps ahead in the game, and I must say that we're glad to be partnership with them,' summed up Fred Zhou.
