Photos give rare glimpse of area's first major pop festival at Bickershaw
The event, held at Bickershaw, over three days in May 1972, featured a line-up of major UK and American acts including The Grateful Dead, Hawkwind, Captain Beefheart and The Kinks.
Organisers had hoped that over 120,000 people would head to the North West for the Bickershaw Festival - notable as it was one of the first festivals to offer on-site camping.
But bad weather meant that the site - which was prone to flooding - turned into something of a mud bath. And a lack of adequate security meant that many tickets were resold and many festivalgoers even got in for free.
Around 40,000 people were estimated to have attended with the organisers - who included one Jeremy Beadle, long before he achieved TV fame - losing a substantial amount of money.
The site was left an eyesore leading to numerous complaints from local residents.

Xbox Games Cancelled as Microsoft Slashes 9000 Jobs
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Microsoft has reportedly cancelled Everwild, an in-development game from UK-based Sea of Thieves developer Rare, and potentially other projects amid a round of layoffs that will see the company lose upwards of 9000 employees. The layoffs were first reported by Bloomberg, which revealed that 10% of staff at Candy Crush developer King – recently purchased by Microsoft alongside Activision and Blizzard – were set to be laid off. Further reporting from the outlet revealed that 9000 employees would be laid off at the software giant, with many of those layoffs coming from within the Microsoft Gaming and Xbox banner. Microsoft In a memo to Xbox staff obtained by IGN, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said the company would "end or decrease work in certain areas of the business" in an effort to "increase agility and effectiveness." The full memo can be read here, courtesy of IGN: Today we are sharing decisions that will impact colleagues across our organization. To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness. Out of respect for those impacted today, the specifics of today's notifications and any organizational shifts will be shared by your team leaders in the coming days. I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we're seeing currently is based on tough decisions we've made previously. We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities. We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means we can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come. Prioritizing our opportunities is essential, but that does not lessen the significance of this moment. Simply put, we would not be where we are today without the time, energy, and creativity of those whose roles are impacted. These decisions are not a reflection of the talent, creativity, and dedication of the people involved. Our momentum is not accidental — it is the result of years of dedicated effort from our teams. HR is working directly with impacted employees to provide severance plan benefits (aligned with local laws), including pay, healthcare coverage, and job placement resources to support their transition. Employees whose roles were eliminated are encouraged to explore open positions across Microsoft Gaming, where their applications will be given priority review. Thank you to everyone who has shaped our culture, our products, and our community. We will move forward with deep appreciation and respect for all who have contributed to this journey. Phil Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier also confirmed on Bluesky that Rare's project Everwild had been cancelled, saying that the news is "coming in drips" and to expect more news of project cancellations and job cuts in the coming hours and days. The full scale of today's Xbox layoff is not yet clear, but you can expect more news of project cancelations and job cuts as the U.S. west coast wakes up. Some studios are planning meetings within the next two hours. — Jason Schreier (@ 2025-07-02T14:42:49.219Z It comes after multiple rounds of layoffs for the software and gaming giant, with over 6000 employees laid off from the company earlier this year in May. The company similarly laid off 10,000 employees in January 2023. Everwild started development in 2014, and was officially revealed in November 2019. The game was said to be a third-person action-adventure game, with multiple high profile creatives taking on leading roles in the game's development. The game was reportedly scheduled to launch in 2023, before being rebooted and entering development hell, although comments from Spencer in 2024 suggested the game was still on track for a release.

Billie Eilish's Album Surges A Year After It First Became A Bestseller
Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft surges back into the U.K. top 40 sales charts, rising to No. 40 ... More on both the Official Physical Albums and Albums Sales lists. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 02: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Billie Eilish attends the 67th GRAMMY Awards on February 02, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Jon Kopaloff/WireImage) Just over a year after Hit Me Hard and Soft, Billie Eilish's latest album, debuted on charts in the United Kingdom, the project is suddenly rising again. The full-length largely hasn't disappeared since its arrival in the spring of 2024, but at the moment, the Grammy-nominated set is climbing on multiple tallies. It even manages to return to one as it becomes a bestselling release across a variety of formats once more. Purchases of Hit Me Hard and Soft Surge Sales of Hit Me Hard and Soft have clearly grown in the U.K. recently, as Eilish's collection returns to the top 40 on a trio of lists focused solely on purchases. Hit Me Hard and Soft rises more than 20 spaces on both the Official Physical Albums and Official Albums Sales charts, landing, coincidentally, at No. 40 on both at the same time. Eilish also reenters the Official Vinyl Albums ranking at No. 33 with her 2024 effort. Sales Drive the Album Higher All those purchases help Hit Me Hard and Soft climb a single spot on the Official Albums chart, which ranks the most consumed projects in the nation. Sales are largely to thank, as the title drops slightly on the Official Albums Streaming ranking, dipping just one space from No. 19 to No. 20. Hit Me Hard and Soft's Lifespan on the Charts Hit Me Hard and Soft has now spent 58 weeks on all but one of the tallies in the U.K. where it can currently be found. The set has only missed that mark on the Official Vinyl Albums chart, where it's now up to 45 frames as it returns. Happier Than Ever Rises Again Sales of two of Eilish's full-lengths are growing in the U.K., as Happier Than Ever also jumps on the Official Physical Albums and Official Albums Sales rankings, appearing at Nos. 64 and 66, respectively. Last week, the singer-songwriter's sophomore studio effort appeared below the No. 80 mark. Billie Eilish's Catalog May Continue to Climb Eilish's entire catalog may continue to grow in the U.K. as she is about to touch down in England for a string of shows. The singer is preparing for half a dozen dates at The O2 Arena in London, and then four nights in Manchester before heading to Dublin, Asia, and back to the United States for another leg.

Benson Boone Misses No. 1 By Just One Space With His New Album
Benson Boone's American Heart debuts at No. 2 on the Official Album Downloads chart and lands inside ... More the top 10 on five other U.K. rankings, marking his career highs. ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 11: Benson Boone performs onstage during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 11, 2024 in Elmont, New York. (Photo byfor MTV) It was only a little more than a year ago that Benson Boone became a global pop superstar thanks to his single, "Beautiful Things." That track is still a charting success to this day in a number of countries, even as his sophomore album American Heart debuts. His latest full-length arrives on half a dozen rankings in the United Kingdom, and as it lands, it brings the pop singer to a new high point on each and every tally on which it can be found. American Heart Launches Inside the Top 10 The set opens highest on the Official Album Downloads chart. Boone earns his first top 10 win on half of those tallies and his second on the other half. In each instance, American Heart brings him to a new career peak. Boone's second full-length almost becomes his first No. 1 on one of those lists, but misses out by just one space. American Heart launches at No. 2 on the Official Album Downloads ranking, coming in behind only the latest release by homegrown rapper Aitch, 4. The pop singer's project kicks off its time in fourth place on four rankings, including the main list of the most consumed albums in the U.K., as well as the Official Album Sales, Official Physical Albums, and Official Vinyl Albums charts. American Heart launches lowest on the Official Albums Streaming chart, as it seems that sales were largely to thank for its success. On that tally, it opens at No. 7. Three Songs From American Heart Chart Three songs from American Heart are present on multiple rankings in the U.K. this frame. Pre-release singles "Mystical Magical" and "Sorry, I'm Here for Someone Else" largely rise across a variety of tallies, while newly-selected fan favorite "Mr. Electric Blue" debuts. That tune opens on the Official Singles chart at No. 55 and in lower spots on two sales lists. Benson Boone's Previous Era Still Shows Strength Boone's debut album Fireworks and Rollerblades can still be found on five albums charts, while "Beautiful Things" remains a top 20 hit across four different rankings.
