MFL to improve VAR for new season after controversial debut

The Star19 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have said improvements will be made for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for use in the upcoming Malaysia League 2025-2026 season after several controversial incidents during its introduction last season.
Acting MFL chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd said two special briefings regarding the improvement of the system were conducted by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) together with representatives of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the International Football Federation (FIFA).
According to him, this is a step to improve the quality of refereeing ahead of the new season starting in August.
'The improvements are not yet in place, but we are aware of it (the issue) because last year was the first time VAR was implemented.
'So from the issues we identified last year, we will improve it for the new season,' he said recently.
Last year, FAM referees committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram said the performance of the referees and the implementation of VAR were rated as excellent, with an average of 0.57 'On-field Review' (OFR) per match and an average of 2.27 minutes of added time used for VAR reviews.
However, several errors sparked criticism, including after referee Razlan Joffri Ali and a VAR official were suspended for two matches after the Super League match between Perak and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT).
Razlan, however, came in for high praise for his excellent refereeing in the 2024-2025 Malaysia Cup final between JDT and Pahang, which the Southern Tigers won 2-1.
Shazli said the MFL are also now on the right track to ensure that the new season runs smoothly and is free from scheduling delays like those that occurred last season.
Therefore, according to him, the full schedule of the new M-League season will be announced after several important elements, such as the Shopee Cup draw and Asian Champions League (ACL), are finalised. — Bernama

No formal protests over Malaysia's naturalised players, says AFC

Nine of Malaysia's starting-11 in their match against Vietnam last month were naturalised players, with five of them receiving Fifa clearance just hours before kick-off. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Asian Football Confederation has not received any official complaint regarding Malaysia's naturalised players following the national team's Asian Cup qualifier win against Vietnam last month. AFC general-secretary Windsor Paul told FMT that the status of naturalised players was ultimately a matter for the world football governing body, Fifa. 'The status of players comes under the purview of Fifa. From my side, AFC has not received any official protest. And even if we did, we will forward it to Fifa,' he said. This follows an Indonesian report claiming that Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam on June 10 may be overturned because some of Harimau Malaya's naturalised players were purportedly ineligible to represent the nation. The report alleged that the result would be voided and Vietnam would be awarded a 3-0 win. It also said the Football Association of Malaysia could be fined up to US$2 million (RM9.4 million) and face further sanctions if Fifa finds evidence of document manipulation involving the heritage of players. FAM dismissed the report as baseless, saying it had complied with the necessary procedures for the registration of the players. Nine of the team's starting-11 in the game were naturalised players, with five of them – Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces and Imanol Machuca – receiving Fifa clearance just hours before kick-off.

Anwar Ibrahim signs for Negri Sembilan — no, not the PM

KUALA LUMPUR: In a transfer move that turned heads and triggered double takes across social media, Anwar Ibrahim has signed for Negri Sembilan. No, not Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but a 26-year-old right back who just happens to share his name with Malaysia's most famous politician. Anwar (the footballer) will don Negri colours for the 2025-2026 M-League season, with the club's announcement quickly going viral and attracting more than 1,500 comments on Facebook. This isn't the first time the Kelantan-born defender has made headlines. In 2023, he caused quite the stir during a KL City match, unintentionally surprising then-Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail when his name was announced as a second-half substitute. It was during the Federal Territories Minister's Cup at the KLFA Stadium, and for a brief moment, Wan Azizah — in the stands — thought her husband was being called into action. KL City went on to beat Perak 3-0, and after the match, with Wan Azizah on medal duty, she made a point to meet and snap a photo with the young namesake. "Akram Mahinan went on stage first and told her my name," recalled Anwar. "She then said she wanted to take a picture with me. I was touched." Anwar's best career moment was winning the Malaysia Cup in 2021 with KL City.

Red Giants face strong rivals in Asean Club Championship

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Selangor will battle for regional supremacy when the Asean Club Championship (ACC) kicks off next month. Super League champions JDT have been drawn in Group B, with Thai League runners-up True Bangkok United, Vietnam's Thep Xanh Nam Dinh, Singapore's Lion City Sailors, Cambodian champions PKR Svay Rieng, and the winner of a playoff between Laos' Ezra FC and Myanmar's Shan United. The Red Giants face a tougher route in Group A, which includes defending champions Buriram United, Thai heavyweights BG Pathum United, Vietnamese Cup winners Cong An Ha Noi, Singapore's Tampines Rovers, and the winner of the Brunei-Philippines playoff between Kasuka FC and Dynamic Herb Cebu. Despite the tough draw, Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi remains optimistic, viewing the tournament as a valuable test for his squad. "We will stick to our style, earn points, and aim to qualify for the next stage," said Kinoshi. "Our group opponents are strong — some are even competing in the Asian Champions League Elite (ACLE). This is a great chance to gauge our level against top regional clubs." The tournament will run until May next year.
