Hard for Brazilian club Recife to lure Bergson away from JDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The talk is that Brazilian club, Sport Recife, are trying to bring Bergson Da Silva home, but the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) star has more reasons to stay in Malaysia. Recife, who compete in the top flight of the Brazilian league, have reportedly made contact with Da Silva. Brazilian journalist Antonio Gabriel wrote on X: "Striker Bergson (34) is on Sport Recife's radar. The Rubro-Negro club has enquired about the player, who has been with Johor in Malaysia since 2020, scoring 152 goals in 137 matches." Since joining JDT in February 2021, Da Silva has plundered 150 goals in 141 appearances, and is just one short of breaking Indra Putra Mahayuddin's all-time Super League scoring record. But beyond club success, Da Silva is also close to qualifying for Malaysian naturalisation under Fifa's five-year residency rule. His contract with JDT runs until the end of this year, putting him just months away from being eligible to play for Harimau Malaya. A move now to Recife would reset that clock entirely. Gabriel said Recife's biggest hurdle isn't just convincing Bergson, but matching his wages. "Among the main challenges is the player's high salary demand. What Da Silva earns in Malaysia is significantly more than what Sport Recife can offer," he said. With national team prospects within reach and more glory with JDT beckons, it's hard to see Da Silva leaving the Southern Tigers now.

Giants JDT and Selangor head abroad to tune up for new Super League season

PETALING JAYA: With less than two months to go before the new Super League season kicks off on Aug 8, two of the league's heavyweights, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Selangor are ramping up their pre-season preparations abroad. As expected, 11-time reigning champions JDT have opted for another ambitious pre-season campaign, this time setting up base in Spain. The Southern Tigers' new head coach Xisco Munoz will get an early chance to assess his squad, with friendlies lined up against La Liga side Levante and Welsh outfit Cardiff City. 'JDT will play Welsh club Cardiff City FC during the Southern Tigers' pre-season camp in Spain from July 3 to 22. 'Having last week announced JDT's friendly against Levante UD during the pre-season, the Southern Tigers will be announcing more matches in Spain soon,' the club said in a statement posted on social media. JDT have already bolstered their squad with several new signings, including Malaysian international Jon Irzabal and Spanish midfielder Hector Hevel. Selangor, meanwhile, have picked Bangkok as their pre-season destination. Head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi confirmed that five friendly matches have been arranged, providing an ideal platform to test players and fine-tune strategies for the upcoming season. So far, the Red Giants have made just one foreign signing in former Muangthong United midfielder Picha Autra, while retaining several key players from last season. 'I will give all the players a chance to play. This is the best opportunity for them to show what they can do. 'We need to develop better combinations in the matches we will play there,' said Kinoshi.

Young Tigers target last four in Asean Under-23 Championship

PETALING JAYA: National youth coach Nafuzi Zain has set a semi-final target for the Asean Under-23 Championship in Jakarta from July 15-29. The Young Tigers kick off their Group A campaign against the Philippines on July 15, before facing Brunei (July 18) and hosts Indonesia (July 21). It is Nafuzi's first international assignment with the squad, and he's hoping to guide them into the last four. However, the former Kedah boss is taking a more grounded approach, focusing on each match, starting with the Philippines. "Of course, the atmosphere is different when managing a national squad," he said after announcing his 30-member training squad at Wisma FAM on Wednesday. "I was informed early on that the approach here is not the same as at club level. "The match against the Philippines is crucial, and a good start will build momentum. After that, we shift focus to Brunei, and then face Indonesia, which will be our toughest test." Nafuzi said reaching the semi-finals would be a key step in building confidence and consistency among his young charges. "Our aim is, of course, to reach the final, but right now, the priority is to get into the top four." The squad include 12 players from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and eight from Selangor, with several names already capped at senior level, including Ubaidullah Syamsul Fazili, Fergus Tierney and Haqimi Azim Rosli. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on July 25. The third-place playoff and final will be held on July 29. Malaysia's best finishes in the tournament were fourth place in the 2005 and 2023 editions, both in Thailand.
