KC-46 Crews Ordered To Drastically Curtail Use Of Jet's Onboard Auxiliary Power Unit
The APUs are intended to make the KC-46s less reliant on ground crews and equipment prior to takeoff, but the issue is having the opposite effect, the Air Force told us.
'AMC has seen some premature failures of APUs we're working with the (Original Equipment Manufacturer) OEM to resolve,' an AMC spokesperson confirmed to us Monday afternoon. 'This memo ensures our maintenance team uses ground support equipment whenever possible to reduce APU wear-and-tear, giving us the best availability while we work through repairs.'
It isn't clear when the problem was discovered or how long the workaround will be in place.
Having to rely on ground systems, including power carts for accessory power and huffers carts for engine start, requires a larger logistical footprint and more personnel on the ground. It's also an inconvenience to the crew. Above all else, it diminishes the aircraft's ability to operate in austere conditions, a key component of the Air Force's Agile Combat Employment (ACE) program. ACE currently refers to a set of concepts for distributed and disaggregated operations centered heavily on short notice and otherwise irregular deployments, often to remote, austere, or otherwise non-traditional locales.
The APU issue is the latest in a long string of problems for the Pegasus, both systemic and incidental. Last week, we told you about a KC -46 that lost its boom during an incident off the coast of Virginia. The Pegasus had been on a F-22 Raptor fighters refueling mission at the time. You can see images of the aftermath of that mishap below.

— Steven Fortson (@zaphod58) July 12, 2025
The recent incident is one of several involving KC-46 booms. Last year, another Pegasus lost its boom while refueling an F-15E Strike Eagle off the coast of California last year. The boom and the control system for it have been a source of serious and persistent technical issues for the Pegasus fleet for years now. A fix for the KC-46's particularly troublesome remote vision system (RVS), which boom operators in the tanker's main cabin use to perform their work, is now unlikely to be finished before summer 2027, roughly three years behind schedule, according to Defense News.
The APU problems come as the KC-46 fleet has been in heavy use. Last month, they were part of an armada of refuelers, which also included the KC-135 Stratotankers, which took part of the U.S. buildup of forces in the region as tensions with Iran rose to a fever pitch. They helped refuel the B-2 Spirit stealth bombers that struck Iranian nuclear sites during Operation Midnight Hammer last month. The bombers dropped 14 30,000-pound GBU-57/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker buster bombs on Iran's Fordow and Natanz nuclear facilities. It marked the first combat use of those weapons.
We reached out to Air Mobility Command Monday evening to find more details about the APU curtailment and will update this story with any pertinent information provided.
In the meantime, the Air Force is working to fix yet another problem on its newest tanker.

Meme Stocks Partied Like It Was 2021 This Week. What's Next?
Meme traders are back and doing donuts in the stock market. What does it all mean? More than anything, a big appetite for risk. Shares of companies like Kohl's (KSS), Opendoor (OPEN), 1-800-FLOWERS (FLWS), GoPro (GPRO)—and, yes, Krispy Kreme (DNUT)—all popped at various moments this week as investors piled in, often for reasons no more obvious than the thrill of watching picks fly. On forums like Reddit's wallstreetbets, enthusiasm jumped from stocks like Sydney Sweeney-powered American Eagle (AEO) to GoPro (GPRO). The return of widespread meme-stock trading coincides with a rise in Goldman Sachs' "Speculative Trading Indicator," which currently sits at its highest level outside of the 1998-to-2001 and 2020-to-2021 periods. The measure shows heightened trading volume in unprofitable stocks, penny stocks, and stocks with high enterprise-value-to-sales multiples. The current meme mania recalls the stimulus-check-fueled rallies in GameStop (GME) and AMC Entertainment Holdings (AMC) of the Covid-19 pandemic. The financial media has seized on the opportunity to detail traders gone wild, capturing among other things new stock acronyms like "DORK." Some are trying to get ahead of the game, searching for clues that might lead to the next hit. Online coordination appears to have had a hand in pushing outsize moves in highly-shorted names both then and now. Analysts broadly see the latest action as a signal that investors' willingness to take on risk is strong. Call options, or contracts linked to an expectation that the price of an asset will rise, have recently accounted for nearly two-thirds of all options volume, Goldman Sachs' analysts wrote recently, the highest share since 2021. Risk-on vibes are spurring activity in equity capital markets. The performance of stocks that went public in June, for example, was the best since early 2024, according to Goldman. Good feels don't last forever. Sharp jumps in speculative trading activity over the last 35 years tended to coincide with above-average S&P 500 returns in the short term before giving way to downturns, Goldman analysts said. Fortune 500 retailer Kohl's gets meme stock treatment as shares double before falling back to earth
Kohl's has leapt into the spotlight as the newest meme stock phenomenon, experiencing a wild surge in its share price driven by retail investors coordinating on social media. Echoing the notorious GameStop and AMC frenzies of 2021, the department-store chain saw its shares more than double at the open on Tuesday, beginning at $10.52 and nearly doubling to about $20, before paring some gains to close up 38% at $14.34. The shares are up more than 50% over a five-day trading period. The dramatic rally in Kohl's stock was not triggered by any turnaround in the retailer's financials or corporate news. Instead, the momentum was fueled by a wave of social media excitement, particularly on Reddit's WallStreetBets and similar forums. 'It's all social media chatter,' Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers told Bloomberg. 'Remember that a highlight of the meme stock era was a dose of nostalgia for companies like GameStop and AMC. Social media chatter can become self-fulfilling.' Users spotlighted the company's extraordinarily high short interest—roughly 49% of its float, or 53 million shares—making it a prime target for a so-called short squeeze. This buying frenzy forced traders betting against the stock to cover their short positions, amplifying the upward pressure on share prices. Trading in Kohl's shares was briefly halted by the New York Stock Exchange, evoking memories of pandemic-era meme stock rallies, although trading halts are typical for various kinds of volatile activity. Even after the initial surge abated, Kohl's shares held on to double-digit gains, finishing the day far above Monday's close and drawing attention from both regulators and analysts. Fundamentals vs. fad: The disconnect Despite the dramatic price action, Kohl's has struggled operationally. Once a staple of American malls, Kohl's has faced a string of challenges, including consecutive quarters of falling same-store sales and shrinking net revenue. The Fortune 500 retailer recently ousted CEO Ashley Buchanan over conflicts of interest, marking Kohl's third CEO in as many years. Major banks have slashed price targets on the shares, with some analysts predicting fair value for the stock as low as $4 to $8, citing persistent weaknesses in store traffic, competition, and strategy. Also, the company recently trimmed its dividend amid attempts to shore up cash. Several ingredients made Kohl's enticing for meme stock traders, though. Beyond the high amount of short activity, the stock was perceived as a bargain by contrarian meme traders, having languished in single digits for months. The flurry of comments about Kohl's stock on Reddit includes many since-deleted comments. Analyst and industry reaction Wall Street skepticism has grown amid the frenzy. Most analysts maintain a cautious tone, noting there is little in the way of fundamental news to justify the move. Goldman Sachs and UBS both maintain price targets below $10, emphasizing concerns over the sustainability of the hype-driven rally. Jay Woods, a strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, offered a blunt assessment to Axios: 'Meme stocks are back … There's no apparent reason for the stock price to have surged this much.' Kohl's dramatic surge is part of a broader rebound in meme stock enthusiasm. Opendoor Technologies, another struggling firm, experienced a similar spike earlier in the week, suggesting the appetite for speculative group action remains alive among retail investors. The market's robust rally in 2025, combined with lingering high short interest in a handful of beaten-down names, has created fertile ground for rapid—and risky—run-ups. Kohl's entry into meme stock territory highlights the enduring influence of online communities in shaping financial markets. While some retail traders may score quick profits, history suggests such episodes of exuberance can quickly unwind, leaving latecomers nursing losses.
