PSL Awards winners revealed for 2024-25 season
Under the bright lights of Tuesday's delayed ceremony, the Premier Soccer League finally celebrated its standout performers from the 2024/25 campaign. The evening carried special significance, having been postponed to accommodate Mamelodi Sundowns' historic Club World Cup participation - a tournament where they proudly flew the PSL flag as Africa's highest-ranked club.
Dr. Irvin Khoza set the celebratory tone by presenting Sundowns with the prestigious Chairman's Award, recognizing their continental achievements. The Brazilians' triumph opened what became a night of surprises and emotional victories.
Orlando Pirates' rising talent Relebohile Mofokeng experienced both joy and disappointment - claiming the MTN8 Last Man Standing honor while seeing the Nedbank Cup's Most Promising Player award go to teammate Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Elsewhere, Kaizer Chiefs' Pule Mmodi earned deserved recognition as Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament, and Elvis Chipezeze's Carling Knockout heroics secured him that competition's top individual prize.
As the football community awaits announcements for remaining major categories - including the coveted Footballer of the Season - Tuesday's event successfully balanced celebration of team achievements with recognition of emerging talents. The ceremony's delayed scheduling ultimately created a perfect platform to honor both continental trailblazers and domestic standouts, showcasing the PSL's growing depth of quality across all competitions.

Jamal Musiala: Extent of Bayern Munich star's injury revealed as player leaves Club World Cup tie on stretcher

Paris Saint-Germain have wished Jamal Musiala well after the Bayern Munich star appeared to suffer a serious injury during the two sides' fiery Club World Cup clash, which could reportedly sideline him for up to five months. The injury - which German media outlet Sport BILD reports is a broken left fibula - occurred when Musiala collided with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma while chasing a loose ball near the byeline at the end of first-half stoppage time on Saturday. Hitting the turf and remaining there for several minutes before being stretchered off, the 22-year-old was in pain as he clutched his left ankle, which appeared to be twisted at an unnatural angle. Donnarumma was not penalised by the referee, who instead soon blew his whistle for half-time with the incident seemingly deemed to have been an accident. But the Italian shot-stopper immediately reacted with dismay, averting his gaze as players from both clubs surrounded the young Germany international and Bayern's physios were beckoned into the pitch. Musiala, making his first competitive start since early April after recovering from a muscular injury, had enjoyed a promising opening half and was preparing to inherit Bayern's iconic No10 shirt next season, but is now set for an extended period on the sidelines. BILD reports that the player has 'damaged several ligaments' in addition to breaking his left fibula, and 'will likely be out for four to five months'. 'Unfortunately, it doesn't look good,' was the assessment of Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund when asked about Musiala's injury by Club World Cup broadcasters DAZN after the match. In his own post-match comments, Bayern boss Vincent Kompany confirmed Musiala had been taken to hospital and agreed that the injury 'didn't look good'. 'The overwhelming feeling is that I hope it's not as bad as it looks, and that he will get through this one,' he added. Referencing it being the player's 'second setback in a very short time', Kompany said his 'blood boils' at such an injury happening to a player who 'lives for this'. He continued: 'It will hit hard, but he's going to get through it and come back stronger.' Meanwhile, Ousmane Dembele, who scored PSG's decisive second goal on the night following Desire Doue's opener, said the injury was 'something you don't want to see on the field' - comments echoed by PSG captain Marquinhos. "Shout out to Jamal Musiala,' both players added, while PSG manager Luis Enrique opened his post-match press conference by wishing the 'unlucky' Bayern midfielder a speedy recovery. Opposition left-back Nuno Mendes similarly told reporters after the game: 'We feel very sorry for him. He's one of the best players, and we hope he comes back stronger." Fellow PSG full-back Achraf Hakimi said it was 'important we talk about Jamal Musiala,' adding: 'I want to give my support to him. We hope to see him back on the pitch soon." PSG's official account on X also posted a message of support to Musiala after the match, wishing the Bayern player a 'swift and full recovery.'

Sundowns coach Cardoso reacts to MTN8 Pirates draw: May the best team win

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns headline the MTN8 semifinal draw. Sundowns thrashed Richards Bay 4-0 to reach the semis on Sunday, while Pirates beat Polokwane City 2-0 on Saturday. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is chasing his first PSL knockout trophy. On paper, many would argue that the MTN8 semifinal between cup holders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns is a dress rehearsal for what could be yet another two-horse race for the premiership title. This is because the two teams have finished first and second, respectively, in the past three seasons, with no real sustained challenge from elsewhere. However, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso said, while he expected the two teams to push each other once again, he cautioned against looking too far ahead. May the best team win. This is how Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso reacted after his team was drawn against cup holders Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 two-legged semifinals. Stellenbosch FC will play Sekhukhune United in the other semi. @City_Press — Tiisetso Malepa (@TiisetsoMalepa) August 4, 2025 'I think we should not emphasise it in that manner. But I believe that the two teams will give a lot throughout the season,' said Cardoso after the semifinal draw, which was conducted immediately after Sundowns smashed Richards Bay 4-0 in the last quarterfinal clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday. First-half goals from striker Iqraam Rayners and an own goal from Bay captain Simphiwe Mcineka gave Sundowns a 2-0 lead at the break. Rayners completed his brace 10 minutes into the second half. Substitute Siyabonga Mabena put the final nail in Bay's coffin with a goal in the 76th minute. Last year's losing finalists, Stellenbosch FC, will battle Sekhukhune United at home in the other semifinal. Sekhukhune are in their first-ever semifinal in this competition. The league is yet to confirm the dates and venues for the R10 million winner-takes-all Wafa Wafa tournament. Cardoso, who joined Sundowns last December and won his first premiership title in May, is on the hunt for his first PSL knockout trophy. The Portuguese lost to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semifinals in April in his first participation in a cup competition. Sundowns were beaten by Stellenbosch in the MTN8 semifinals last year and lost against unfancied Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Cup final in November. The two results, which occurred under Cardoso's predecessor, Manqoba Mngqithi, played a big role in the coaching change. Cardoso said he hoped his team would be firing on all cylinders during the semifinal clash against Pirates. I'm sure we and Pirates are in an emotionally uncomfortable position, but we always knew that the draw could go this way in the semifinals or the final. So, may the best team win. Miguel Cardoso He added: 'Obviously, there must be a result, and it will be interesting because the semifinals are played over two legs. 'Usually, the strongest team wins those big matches, and I think they will be two very tough matches. 'Hopefully, the two matches will come when we are in our two strongest moments, maybe in September.' Sundowns will get the defence of their premiership title under way away against Chippa United on Saturday.

Messi suffered ‘minor muscle injury' in right leg. Here is latest update

Lionel Messi sustained 'a minor muscle injury in his right leg' during Inter Miami's Leagues Cup penalty shootout win over Necaxa on Saturday, according to a club statement on Sunday night. He underwent medical exams to determine the extent of the injury and the timetable for his return is undetermined. 'His medical clearance will depend on his clinical progress and response to treatment,' said the press release. Messi fell to the ground and clutched his leg after being challenged by defenders Raul Sanchez and Alexi Pena at the 11-minute mark of the game. He stumbled, got up, tried to walk it off, but then sat down and sought medical attention. Messi was clearly dejected as he removed his captain's armband and headed to the tunnel. The 38-year-old Argentine star had been on a hot streak of late with a brace in six of seven matches. He scored 18 goals and had nine assists in 18 MLS games and played 90-plus minutes in 20 matches in a row, including four in the Club World Cup. He had two assists in Miami's 2-1 Leagues Cup opening win against Atlas last week and was named MLS Player of the Month. 'Obviously, we feel it when he is not on the field, he's the best player in the world,' said goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo, who made a big save in the penalty shootout. 'We want to have him playing. But these are things that can happen to anyone. We have to carry on without him. No excuses.' Midfielder Fede Redondo added: 'He's our captain, our leader, and we hope he recovers as soon as possible.' Miami will face Mexican club Pumas on Wednesday at Chase Stadium in the third and final group stage match. The top four MLS teams and top four Liga MX teams advance to the quarterfinals. As of Sunday night, with 15 of 18 MLS teams having played two games, Miami sat in second place in the MLS side of the bracket with five points (one regulation win for three points, one penalty shootout win for two points). The Portland Timbers, led by former Inter Miami coach Phil Neville, were in first place with six points. Minnesota and Columbus were third and fourth with four points each.
