Lalu Prasad forms new RJD team ahead of Bihar polls, focuses on caste balance
Lalu appointed four vice-presidents, including his wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi, and former state party president Jagadanand Singh. The team also includes 12 general secretaries and 10 secretaries, with clear attention paid to the traditional support bases of the party.
Of the 27-member team, seven are from the Yadav community, including Lalu and Rabri. Significant representation has also been given to castes and communities that have supported Lalu and the RJD since the Janata Dal era.
However, there are only three leaders from the general castes—two from the Rajput caste and one from the Bhumihar caste. Notably, no Brahmin leader has been included. Among Dalits, the Ravidas or Chamar communities have been given greater prominence.

Amid long-standing demands and protests, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said in a social media post that he has directed the Education Department to amend existing rules to ensure that candidates from Bihar are given priority in the Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE), beginning with TRE-4 in 2025. Jobs have emerged as a core issue in poll-bound Bihar amid the demand for a domicile policy by large sections of the electorate, especially among aspirants preparing for teacher recruitment exams. The move comes a few weeks after the state government's July 8 approval of 35% reservation for women native to Bihar in all government jobs. Though there had been a 35% reservation in state government jobs for women since 2016, it was previously open to women from other states as well. In his social media post, the Chief Minister also said the government has continuously worked to improve the education system since taking office in November 2005. 'Teachers have been appointed in large numbers in order to strengthen the education system. The Education Department has been directed to amend the relevant rules to give priority to the people of Bihar in the teacher appointment process,' the Chief Minister said. The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) conducts TRE to fill teaching positions in primary, secondary, and senior secondary schools across the state. With this change, candidates with long-term domicile status in Bihar could now be prioritised over applicants from other states. Over the last many months, Patna's streets have witnessed multiple protests supporting the demand, with the slogan 'Vote de Bihari, naukari le bahri (Biharis vote, outsiders take jobs)' gaining traction. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD and Jan Suraaj chief Prashant Kishor have been among prominent politicians backing the demand for some time, with Yadav previously even promising 100% reservation across all jobs if the RJD comes to power in the coming polls. Reacting to the announcement, Tejashwi again accused the NDA government of copying the Opposition's agenda. In a social media post, he said, 'It is a matter of immense delight that the ideologically bankrupt NDA government, which used to outright reject our demand to implement the domicile policy in Bihar and boasted in the Assembly that it would never implement such a policy under any circumstances, is now copying this announcement just like they have imitated our other schemes.' He added, 'It is clear that this copycat NDA government of 20 years has no policy, vision, or direction of its own. The people of Bihar are enjoying watching a government, which in twenty years couldn't figure out what to do or what not to do, now dance to our cues, demands, and announcements.' At the same time, LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan, who is a constituent of the NDA, said, 'The NDA government in Bihar, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has taken the historic decision to implement a domicile policy in Bihar. I and my party…welcome and support this decision. This will give priority to the local youth in state government jobs. This decision is a major initiative by the government to connect local unemployed youth to government jobs in Bihar. I had also been making a longstanding and widespread demand for the implementation of a domicile policy in the state, which the government has now started to implement in the education sector.'

His recent push for Ambedkar Teerth Sthal Yatra Yojana has shifted focus to the party's strategy of strengthening support among Dalit communities. These are Mhow-Janmabhoomi, London-Shiksha Bhoomi, Delhi-Mahaparinirvan Sthal, Nagpur-Diksha Bhoomi, and Mumbai-Chaitya Bhoomi. "Due to govt efforts, these pilgrimage sites have now developed into major tourist destinations as well as sources of inspiration. However, for economically weaker sections, visiting these places remains difficult. Therefore, to support them, a scheme named Ambedkar Teerth Sthal Yatra Yojana should be launched, so that people can easily visit and experience five major places associated with Dr Ambedkar's life," the RLD chief said. He said the scheme would make people understand Ambedkar's principles and ideas for building an egalitarian society. "It would not only promote social harmony but also serve as a concrete step towards realising Ambedkar's dreams," Jayant, also a Union minister, said. With BSP's political graph has been on a decline in recent years, the RLD sees an opportunity to fill in the vacuum. RLD national secretary Anupam Mishra said the party has stepped up its outreach to Dalits in recent times and added that "we need to work more aggressively to sustain our momentum and get more closely associated with Dalits and other oppressed classes." Sources said RLD has been sending feelers amongst Dalits since 2024 when it snapped ties with Samajwadi Party and joined the BJP-led NDA. New Delhi: The much-anticipated 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' of Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, originally scheduled to begin on August 10 in Bihar, has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) officially announced the postponement through a letter (No. 168, dated August 4, 2025) issued by its state office, citing "unavoidable reasons" behind the decision. The death of a former Chief Minister of Jharkhand is believed to be the primary reason behind the deferment, sources said. The party has urged supporters and officials to consider the previous schedule cancelled until a new date is announced. The revised schedule of the yatra will be communicated in due course. Leaders from both parties had termed the yatra as the beginning of their electoral campaign for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. It was designed not only to voice opposition to recent electoral roll deletions under SIR but also to galvanise support and re-energise the Mahagathbandhan cadre ahead of the polls. Party insiders said the announcement of the yatra had already created a buzz within the alliance, with grassroots workers and ticket aspirants gearing up to participate in large numbers.
