Zahid: Don't exploit Malay unity for political gain

The Sun14-06-2025
BAGAN DATUK: Do not use the Malay unity agenda as a political gimmick, especially after experiencing election failure, said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister said Umno did not intend to dispute any party that wanted to establish a secretariat to unify Malay parties, but the motive for its struggle must be clear and not just for political purposes.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said the establishment of Umno on May 11, 1946 also succeeded in bringing together Malay non-governmental organisations (NGOs) at that time and the principle of Malay unification as a whole is still the party's guiding principle.
'I would like to wish the chairman of the Malay Secretariat all the best and I pray that he will succeed in uniting Malay parties and Malay NGOs for the benefit of the Malays.
'Let us unite in what is important in terms of thought, mindset and conscience, not for any other purpose when the organising party is trying to unite the Malays after not having a winner in the last election, apart from all losing deposits,' he said at a press conference after officiating the Bagan Datuk Umno Division Delegates Meeting for 2025 here today.
On June 4, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was reported to have said that a movement called the Malay Secretariat was formed to unite all parties fighting for the Malays under one big umbrella.
Earlier, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk, said in his speech that Umno would not accept any form of secretariat that supposedly aims to unite the Malays on a political basis.
Meanwhile, he said that every member, especially Umno leaders need to strengthen the party again, besides realising that the struggle they have been through is full of tests.
He said that all the events that have happened before must also be used as a lesson to ensure that Umno regains its place in the hearts of the people in the 16th general election (GE16).
'There is no struggle without tests. Someone who succeeds in becoming a leader will definitely be tested, if someone rises without tests, they will definitely go down. We must also change and build new strength to ensure that we return to dominating GE16,' he said.

UMNO Must Lead Digital Narrative, Reach Youth To Stay Relevant– Zambry

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- UMNO must lead in shaping the digital narrative, strengthen its presence on new media and engage young voters to remain relevant, UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said today. He said politics has entered the digital era in which information, perceptions and sentiments are rapidly shaped through social media and online platforms. 'This new challenge requires UMNO to adopt fresher, more flexible and pragmatic approaches. We cannot remain bound by the old ways,' he said in a Facebook post.

Umno must act on principle even if unpopular, says Zahid

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called for party members to take BN's failure to form the government in the past two general elections as a lesson and turning point to rebuild the party's strength. (Bernama pic) RAUB : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that in today's challenging political landscape, decisions made by the party are aimed at ensuring the country's stability and future, even if those decisions are unpopular. Explaining the matter when officiating the Raub Umno division delegates' meeting, he emphasised that in any struggle, not all decisions taken will be comfortable, but they must be principled. 'No matter how high our position is in the party or government, we must realise that every post is a trust that must be carried out with full responsibility,' he said. Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and deputy prime minister, said what Umno needs most right now is unity of purpose and a strong fighting spirit, without faltering when tested. He also reminded party members to take Umno and BN's failure to form the government in the past two general elections as a lesson and turning point to rebuild the party's strength. 'We have been tested twice in the general elections… enough of the divisions, quarrels, shooting at each other, and hidden saboteurs within. 'Let us learn from past weaknesses and fix Umno and BN from within. Hopefully, we can be dominant once again,' he said. At a press conference later, Zahid said Umno would look into whether any of its members had participated in the rally held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. 'Umno is now part of the unity government, and we must strengthen, not undermine, the government that is in place,' he said.

Thai, Cambodian leaders to meet in Malaysia for ceasefire consultation

BANGKOK: The Thai government has confirmed it will attend a regional peace consultation in Malaysia tomorrow to discuss the escalating border conflict with Cambodia. Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as the current Asean chair, has invited the Thai leadership to discuss the Thai-Cambodian conflict. "Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai will lead the Thai delegation, which includes Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Deputy Defence Minister General Natthaphon Nakpanich, and other senior officials, to attend the consultation at the Prime Minister's Office in Malaysia," he said in a statement today. He added that it has also been confirmed that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet will personally attend the consultation at the invitation of the Asean chair. Jirayu said the Thai delegation is scheduled to depart from the Royal Thai Air Force base at approximately 10.30am, with the meeting set for 3pm (Malaysian time). "The purpose of these talks is to listen to proposals that may lead to informed decisions and ultimately restore peace. "The Thai government remains steadfast in its commitment to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Thailand," he said. On Friday, Anwar also held separate discussions with both the Thai and Cambodian leaders, urging them to agree to an immediate ceasefire. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who expressed deep concern over the clashes on Friday, likewise urged both sides to agree to an immediate ceasefire and resolve their differences through dialogue. The border dispute between the two nations escalated on July 25, leading to armed clashes along Cambodia's northern border region. The latest hostilities have reportedly resulted in over 20 fatalities on the Thai side. At the same time, Cambodian authorities said that five soldiers and eight civilians have been killed, with thousands displaced on both sides of the border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been rising since May 28, following a confrontation between soldiers near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which led to the death of a Cambodian soldier. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have long contested an 817km undemarcated stretch of their shared border, which has remained a persistent source of tension and diplomatic strain. – BERNAMA
