The countdown is over. Today, the DP World Tour – Bahrain Championship 2025 officially tees off at the Royal Golf Club. Yesterday, the grounds and venue were inspected to witness firsthand how Bahrain is readying itself for one of the region's biggest sporting events.
A Venue Transformed
Designed by golf legend Colin Montgomerie, the 7,261-yard par-72 course has been sculpted out of the desert, blending natural beauty with world-class design. Over the past year, significant improvements have been made to key holes, the fairways, and the greens, with advanced Trackman radar technology integrated to enhance player performance analysis. 'The feedback from last year's event was overwhelmingly positive,' said an event official. 'This year, we've taken it a step further to make sure every detail—from the fairways to spectator facilities—is at an even higher standard.'
Local delicacies
As the venue was explored, food stalls were seen serving everything from gourmet local delicacies to international favorites, catering to both casual spectators and seasoned golf fans alike. Additionally, an interactive fan zone has been set up, allowing visitors to test their own golfing skills, experience augmented reality simulations, and even meet some of the game's rising stars.
Champions
On the competitive front, defending champion Dylan Frittelli is back to defend his title against a formidable field, including the likes of Thorbjorn Olesen, Jorge Campillo, and former Masters champion Patrick Reed. With the course expected to play fast and firm, players will need precision and strategic mastery to navigate its challenging layout. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Frittelli emphasized his excitement about returning to Bahrain: 'It will be great to be back at the Royal Golf Club. I had such a great experience last year, and I can't wait to challenge for the title again.'
With 132 players from across the globe, alongside their support teams and families, the event is expected to provide a significant boost to the tourism and hospitality sectors.

McIlroy Commits to Australian Open in Two-Year Boost for Tournament

TDT | Manama Golf's Australian Open has secured a major boost with the signing of Rory McIlroy for the next two editions, a landmark move for the historic tournament that has struggled in recent years to attract top-tier talent. Fresh off his Masters success and career Grand Slam, the Northern Irishman confirmed he will compete at Royal Melbourne in December 2025 and at Kingston Heath in 2026—two of the most prestigious venues on Melbourne's famed Sandbelt. 'I'm proud to be committing to the Australian Open for the next two years,' McIlroy said. 'It's somewhere I've always wanted to play professionally, and I'm confident it will thrive again this year.' McIlroy, who last lifted the Stonehaven Cup in a memorable 2013 duel against Adam Scott, could be set for a rematch with the Australian great this year. The tournament, first held in 1904, boasts a roll of honour including legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player. The commitment signals renewed ambition from Golf Australia, following the scrapping of its recent mixed-format initiative. Chief Executive James Sutherland called McIlroy's return 'a significant step' in restoring the championship's global status.

Djokovic to miss Italian Open

AFP | Rome Record 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic will not take part in the Italian Open in Rome from May 7-18, tournament organisers announced Tuesday. 'Novak Djokovic has announced he won't take part to #IBI25,' organisers of the clay court tournament announced on social media. The organisers did not state the reason for 37-year-old Djokovic's withdrawal. The Serb's wait for a 100th ATP title goes on after his withdrawal from the Masters event in the Italian capital which he has won six times, most recently in 2022. His last silverware came at the Paris Olympics last year -- at the site of Roland Garros where the next Grand Slam in the calender will take place from May 26 to June 8. The Bel - grade-native's absence from the f i n a l main warm-up event to the French Open casts further doubts over his chances of claiming a fourth title at Roland Garros. Indeed, Djokovic is yet to lift a trophy this season after enduring a turbulent start to 2025. Djokovic lost the Miami Open final to Czech teenager Jakub Mensik last month, before suffering early exits on the clay in Monte Carlo and Madrid. He was eliminated from the Madrid Open on Saturday after defeat to Italy's Matteo Arnaldi, which followed on from his loss to Alejandro Tabilo in his opener at the Monte Carlo Masters. Prior to the start of the clay court season, the world number five said he was suffering from the effects of an eye infection, and he has endured a winless run of form as he adapts to the 'new reality' of his career.

Ahmad Skaik Gears Up for HotelPlanner Tour Double-Header in UAE as He Nears Professional Status

UAE National Team star Ahmad Skaik is eagerly preparing for his return to the HotelPlanner Tour's (formerly the Challenge Tour) double-header in the UAE next month, marking a significant step in his journey toward becoming a professional golfer. For the third consecutive year, the DP World Tour's official feeder circuit will showcase world-class golf on UAE shores, with the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) co-promoting the two prestigious tournaments. The action kicks off with the UAE Challenge from April 10-13 at Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club, which will host a European Tour Group-sanctioned event for the first time. The tour will then move to Abu Dhabi for the Abu Dhabi Challenge at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club from April 17-20. These back-to-back tournaments not only spotlight rising stars and DP World Tour winners battling to return to the global golf stage but also play a pivotal role in developing UAE National Team players, as well as professionals and amateurs based in the UAE. Thanks to the EGF's long-standing partnership with the European Tour Group, 30 tournament spots are secured for UAE players across both events. This partnership furthers the European Tour Group's commitment to nurturing golf in the UAE through 2032. Ahmad Skaik has greatly benefited from these opportunities, having participated in the HotelPlanner Tour over the past two years. He will again tee off alongside fellow UAE National Team players, including Sam Mullane, Jonathan Selvaraj, Rayan Ahmed, Mohammad Skaik, and Neyl Cherrat. 'The partnership has been invaluable,' Skaik shared. 'I feel like I improve every time I compete on the HotelPlanner Tour. I'm learning and growing, and I believe one day I can compete and win. The players here are sharp, make fewer mistakes, and are consistent, so I feel like I'm getting closer. I just need to keep practicing and stay focused, and hopefully, I can win there and on the DP World Tour.' Exposure to top-tier competition has been transformative for Skaik, whose ultimate goal is to turn professional by the end of this year, possibly after the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in the UAE. Skaik's recent performance at the 2025 GCC Golf Championship in Saudi Arabia has been a highlight of his career. The 27-year-old claimed both individual and team gold medals for the UAE at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, setting a new championship record with an 18-under-par total of 270 and securing the largest individual winning margin in the event's history. This historic achievement is built on valuable experience gained through his participation in 12 HotelPlanner Tour events over the past two years. Thanks to the EGF's exchange of tournament spots with global golf federations, UAE players like Skaik have been able to compete in HotelPlanner Tour events around the world, gaining exposure and sharpening their skills on an international stage. 'Playing in these events helps me stay focused,' Skaik said. 'I want to work hard and stay confident heading into each tournament. When I'm playing well, I love having multiple events lined up because I learn from each one and improve week by week.' Next month's HotelPlanner Tour double-header will also bring new developments for the EGF, as two newly appointed full-time rules officials, Thai twins Sasinun and Sasikarn Tungbenjapol, will make their debut. The twins bring a wealth of experience from officiating at tournaments such as the Thai LPGA Tour, Ladies European Tour, and Asian Tour, as well as the 2022 Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship, hosted by the R&A at Siam Country Club in Thailand. As the UAE's golf scene continues to thrive, the upcoming events are set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the sport in the region.
