Mastering lag putting: Tips to minimise three-putts

Photo: Christiaan Kotze, BackpagePix Dylan Frittelli during his round of the day with an 8-under 64 at the Eye of Africa PGA Championship. | BackpagePix As golfers, we've all been there - standing on the green, staring down a lengthy putt, and hoping against hope that we can navigate the break and sink the ball in two strokes or less. But for many of us, three-putting is an all-too-familiar nemesis, one that can quickly derail an otherwise solid round. So, how can you improve your lag putting and minimize those pesky three-putts? The answer lies in a combination of proper technique, strategic thinking, and mental preparation. To start, it's essential to develop a consistent pre-shot routine. This will help you focus and align your putter face properly, setting you up for a smooth, pendulum-like stroke. Take your time, and make sure to study the green's topography, grain, and slope to anticipate the ball's path. When it comes to lag putting, speed is crucial. Aim for a speed that allows the ball to stop within a few feet of the hole, rather than risking a long, breaking putt. And remember, it's always better to err on the side of caution - leaving yourself an uphill putt is generally easier to control than a downhill putt. Strategically, playing to the center of the green can help minimize the likelihood of a long, breaking putt. And when possible, try to leave your first putt above the hole, making it easier to control the speed of your second putt. Of course, having the right putter can also make a big difference. Experiment with different putters to find one that suits your stroke and style, and don't be afraid to seek out professional advice if needed. In addition to proper technique and strategy, mental preparation is also essential for improving your lag putting. Stay present and focused, concentrating on the task at hand rather than worrying about the outcome. Cultivate a positive attitude, reminding yourself that you're capable of making a good putt. Finally, don't be too hard on yourself if you do happen to three-putt. Instead, take the opportunity to analyze your miss and identify areas for improvement. With practice, patience, and persistence, you can develop the skills and confidence needed to become a more effective lag. A slew of WDs has given a dozen alternates a spot in this PGA Tour opposite-field event
All eyes will be on the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but this week also marks the PGA Tour's first opposite-field event of 2025, the Puerto Rico Open. There are 132 players in the Puerto Rico field, all of them among those and more who didn't qualify for the API, a signature event with a 72-man field (and a 36-hole cut). The API roster, as is common with the signature events, hasn't had any changes since it was announced at the deadline last Friday. The Puerto Rico event, however, has been, shall we say, fluid. Since Saturday, there have 12 players withdraw, according to the PGA Tour: David Skinns WD / Jonathan Byrd IN Fabian Gomez WD / Adam Long IN Vincent Norrman WD / Sung Kang IN Joel Dahmen WD / Kyle Stanley IN Brendon Todd WD / Sangmoon Bae IN Max McGreevy WD / Brian Stuard IN Joe Highsmith WD / Ryan Armour IN Martin Trainer WD / Ben Crane IN Greyson Sigg WD / David Hearn IN Andrew Novak WD / Dylan Frittelli IN Sam Stevens WD / Jim Herman IN Dylan Frittelli WD / Jimmy Walker IN The Puerto Rico withdrawal list includes Joe Highsmith, but that was merely a procedural move, as his win Sunday in the Cognizant Classic earned him a tee time at Arnie's Place in Orlando. One player, Dylan Frittelli, was the 10th alternate to get in but then he withdrew himself, giving the last spot (barring anymore changes) to Jimmy Walker. If there any more WDs, the next two names on the alternate list are Chris Stroud and Bo Van Pelt. Further additions to the Puerto Rico field are 14 sponsor exemptions and four Monday qualifiers. The PRO has a total purse of $4 million with a first-place prize of $720,000 but the winner does not earn a spot in the Masters (if not already qualified) as that perk does not go to winners of opposite-field tournaments. March 6-9: Puerto Rico Open / Arnold Palmer Invitational April 17-20: Corales Puntacana Championship / RBC Heritage May 8-11: Myrtle Beach Classic / Truist Championship (previously the Wells Fargo Championship) July 10-13: ISCO Championship / Genesis Scottish Open July 17-20: Barracuda Championship / Open Championship (at Royal Portrush) This article originally appeared on Golfweek: Puerto Rico Open 2025: 12 players withdrew from opposite-field event

Bahrain Championship 2025 kicks off at the Royal Golf Club
TDT | Manama The countdown is over. Today, the DP World Tour – Bahrain Championship 2025 officially tees off at the Royal Golf Club. Yesterday, the grounds and venue were inspected to witness firsthand how Bahrain is readying itself for one of the region's biggest sporting events. A Venue Transformed Designed by golf legend Colin Montgomerie, the 7,261-yard par-72 course has been sculpted out of the desert, blending natural beauty with world-class design. Over the past year, significant improvements have been made to key holes, the fairways, and the greens, with advanced Trackman radar technology integrated to enhance player performance analysis. 'The feedback from last year's event was overwhelmingly positive,' said an event official. 'This year, we've taken it a step further to make sure every detail—from the fairways to spectator facilities—is at an even higher standard.' Local delicacies As the venue was explored, food stalls were seen serving everything from gourmet local delicacies to international favorites, catering to both casual spectators and seasoned golf fans alike. Additionally, an interactive fan zone has been set up, allowing visitors to test their own golfing skills, experience augmented reality simulations, and even meet some of the game's rising stars. Champions On the competitive front, defending champion Dylan Frittelli is back to defend his title against a formidable field, including the likes of Thorbjorn Olesen, Jorge Campillo, and former Masters champion Patrick Reed. With the course expected to play fast and firm, players will need precision and strategic mastery to navigate its challenging layout. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Frittelli emphasized his excitement about returning to Bahrain: 'It will be great to be back at the Royal Golf Club. I had such a great experience last year, and I can't wait to challenge for the title again.' With 132 players from across the globe, alongside their support teams and families, the event is expected to provide a significant boost to the tourism and hospitality sectors.
