Murshidabad violence: Charge sheet filed by Bengal police against 13 in father-son murder case
The murders of Haragobindo Das (74) and his son Chandan Das (40) took place on April 11 during the Dhuliyan-Suti-Shamshergunj communal violence, amid protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in the district. The riots left at least three people dead and many injured, besides forcing hundreds to flee their homes.
The unrest, which lasted from April 8 to 12, had also caused widespread damage to public and private properties, prompting the Calcutta High Court to order the deployment of Central Armed Forces to restore law and order.
"We have submitted the charge sheet before the district court within 55 days of the crime and have named 13 people in it," the official said on Friday.
In the aftermath of the violence, the police had arrested over 300 suspected miscreants in connection with over 60 FIRs which were lodged at various police stations in Murshidabad.
According to police reports at the Betbona village where the Das family residence was targeted, the attackers broke down the main door, dragged out Chandan Das and Hargobindo Das, and struck them with an axe in the back. A man reportedly stood guard until they died.
Reports also noted that in some attacks, the rioters cut off the water supply to prevent fires from being extinguished.
Although the details of those named in the charge sheet or the sections slapped on them were not immediately clear, a fact-finding team set up by the high court had named local Trinamool Congress leader Mehboob Alam, former chairman of the Dhuliyan Municipality, to have directed the attack.
The team, while submitting its report before the high court on May 21, had also stated "inactivity and absence" of the state police, and added that the men in uniform did not respond to calls from the locals during the violence. The committee documented that "as many as 113 houses were badly affected in the village of Betbona", many of which were set on fire.

NIA chargesheets another accused for promoting banned PFI's activities in Bihar
New Delhi [India], July 4 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted one more accused in a case relating to the anti-national activities of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in Bihar, the NIA said in a statement on Friday. Md. Sajjad Alam of East Champaran district, Bihar, is the 18th accused to be arrested and charged in the case RC-31/2022/NIA/DLI. In its supplementary chargesheet filed on Friday before the NIA Special Court, Patna, the anti-terror agency has charged the accused, who was arrested from IGI Airport at New Delhi on his arrival from Dubai (UAE) in January this year, under various sections of the IPC and UA(P) Act. Earlier, the NIA Special Court had issued an arrest warrant against Sajjad, an active PFI cadre. NIA Investigations had revealed that the accused was involved in channelising illegal funds from Dubai to PFI cadres in Bihar through a syndicate based in Karnataka and Kerala. The funds were used for furthering criminal/unlawful activities of PFI even after its ban by the Government of India. The PFI conspiracy, aimed at establishing Islamic rule in India by 2047, involved unlawful activities by the outfit's cadres in order to terrorise people and disrupt the country's peace and harmony by spreading religious enmity between different groups. The case was originally registered on 12th July 2022 at PS Phulwarisharif in Patna district against 26 persons under the IPC. NIA took up the investigation a few days later and invoked the UA (P) Act in the case and had earlier chargesheeted 17 accused persons, the NIA said. Further investigations in the case are continuing, it added. Earlier, in a significant development in its ongoing probe into the targeted murder of BJP Yuva Morcha member Praveen Nettaru, allegedly carried out by members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested a prime accused who had been on the run for two years. The accused, Abdul Rahaman, who carried a bounty of Rs 4 lakh, was arrested by an NIA team upon his arrival from Qatar at Kannur International Airport. A total of four accused, including Rahaman and two other absconders, were chargesheeted by NIA in this case in April this year, taking the total chargesheeted in the case to had also declared rewards for information relating to six absconders. Rahaman was carrying a reward of Rs 4 lakh for this investigations had revealed that 'Rahaman had, on directions of PFI leadership, voluntarily harboured the main assailants and others involved in the case.''Rahaman had fled to Qatar after the attackers were arrested,' said the NIA in a statement. 2 habeas pleas in HC over Bengal workers detained in Odisha
Kolkata: Two habeas corpus petitions were filed in Calcutta High Court on Friday against Odisha Police for "illegal detention" of migrant workers from Bengal. Trinamool MP and chairman of West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board Samirul Islam said the parents of two workers filed the petitions to bring the detainees before the HC. On Thursday, Bengal chief secretary Manoj Pant wrote to his Odisha counterpart, Manoj Ahuja, for release of the detained workers and to stop their harassment, urging immediate intervention. The chief secretary of Odisha, SP of Jagatsinghpur and OC of Balikuda police station have been made parties in the petition along with the Bengal CS and Murshidabad district magistrate. Nasima Mondal, mother of detained Rakhibul Islam Mondal, a resident of Hariharpara in Murshidabad, filed one of the petitions. She sought judicial intervention under Article 226 of the Constitution. Rakhibul, a migrant labourer working at Jagatsinghpur, was detained beyond 24 hours without being produced before any court of law, she claimed. This was against Supreme Court's guidelines and his fundamental rights were violated, Nasima's petition said. The police, while conducting an identity verification drive on June 25, detained Rakhibul and other Bengali-speaking people without any warrant. Nasima said though her son had valid documents — including Aadhaar, voter ID and ration card — these were not taken into consideration. Rakhibul was detained on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi for speaking Bengali, her petition claimed, adding that Odisha officials did not even cross-check his identity. Kin alleges gang-rape of minor girl in Dholpur dist
Jaipur: The family of a 16-year-old girl in Dholpur lodged an FIR Friday, alleging that she was gang-raped by three men who held her captive throughout the night. The accused reportedly fled the scene when the family discovered the ordeal. The incident was reported in the Kaulari police station area. According to the FIR lodged by the girl's father, the minor received a mobile phone call around 11pm on July 2 while she was sleeping on the rooftop of her house with her mother. A man living in the neighbourhood on the other end of the line allegedly persuaded her to step outside her home, citing an urgent matter. Once she was outside, the three accused reportedly overpowered her, covering her mouth and restraining her before dragging her into a nearby house where they allegedly raped her. A police officer said captive and repeatedly assaulted her. The rape survivor's father found his daughter missing from their home the next morning. A frantic search led him to a neighbour's house where he found his daughter. Police confirmed that all three accused have absconded from the village since the incident came to light. Police are currently conducting raids at their suspected hideouts. The investigation into the case registered under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been handed over to Circle Officer Anup Kumar. A forensic team conducted an inspection of the crime scene, and the girl's statements were recorded before a magistrate.
