Kolkata: Two habeas corpus petitions were filed in Calcutta High Court on Friday against Odisha Police for "illegal detention" of migrant workers from Bengal.
Trinamool MP and chairman of West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board Samirul Islam said the parents of two workers filed the petitions to bring the detainees before the HC.

"Bengali-speaking people were detained in Odisha since June 25 while the country was observing 50 years of Emergency," Islam said.
On Thursday, Bengal chief secretary Manoj Pant wrote to his Odisha counterpart, Manoj Ahuja, for release of the detained workers and to stop their harassment, urging immediate intervention.
The chief secretary of Odisha, SP of Jagatsinghpur and OC of Balikuda police station have been made parties in the petition along with the Bengal CS and Murshidabad district magistrate.
Nasima Mondal, mother of detained Rakhibul Islam Mondal, a resident of Hariharpara in Murshidabad, filed one of the petitions. She sought judicial intervention under Article 226 of the Constitution.
Rakhibul, a migrant labourer working at Jagatsinghpur, was detained beyond 24 hours without being produced before any court of law, she claimed. This was against Supreme Court's guidelines and his fundamental rights were violated, Nasima's petition said.
The police, while conducting an identity verification drive on June 25, detained Rakhibul and other Bengali-speaking people without any warrant. Nasima said though her son had valid documents — including Aadhaar, voter ID and ration card — these were not taken into consideration.
Rakhibul was detained on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi for speaking Bengali, her petition claimed, adding that Odisha officials did not even cross-check his identity.

She pleaded that her son be produced before the court.
A similar petition was filed by Rajjak Sk, also a resident of Hariharpara, for his son Sainur Islam. Rajjak claimed his son had been detained by Jagatsinghpur police since June 30 during the identification drive of Bengali-speaking people. Sainur has not been given any legal support to seek bail, he said, seeking his son to be produced before the court and his "lost dignity restored".
Islam posted on X: "We have moved court against the barbaric torture and atrocity on migrant workers in BJP-governed states like Odisha. The atrocity on Bengali-speaking people is a sheer violation of the Constitution."

Museum to be set up in Puri to promote Jagannath culture

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will set up a museum, library and research centre in Puri for the preservation of Jagannath culture and literature, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Friday. Addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Majhi said the complex will play a pivotal role in the study, documentation and promotion of the rich culture associated with Lord Jagannath. The campus will also have an auditorium with a capacity of 300 seats, a space where light and sound shows will be hosted daily and a large open-air stage where cultural performances will be showcased, he said. Stressing that a large number of tourists, especially the youth, visiting Puri are not aware of the Jagannath culture, Majhi said little has been done in this regard for the last seven decades. 'For the promotion and preservation of Jagannath culture and literature, the government has now decided to set up this world-class centre in Puri,' he said. Majhi also said that no steps were taken earlier to develop Puri as a tourist destination. 'Think about it, if a tourist comes to Puri today, he has two main destinations, one of which is the Jagannath temple and the other is the sea beach. Apart from this, there is no other entertainment or tourism infrastructure where he can spend some time,' he said. 'So, to solve these two problems, our government has decided to establish a world-class Shri Jagannath Museum, Library and Research Centre in Puri. It will be built in one complex,' he said. Majhi said the museum will showcase the history of the temple construction, making of wooden deities, Kalinga's victory in Kanchi, festivals and temple rituals, among others. All these events can be displayed through paintings, miniature statues, plaques and other items, he said. The proposed library will have books related to Jagannath culture as well as Odia culture and tradition, he said, noting that it will also have e-library facilities. The Chief Minister said there are many stories related to the Jagannath temple, and those will be divided into episodes and presented in Odia, Hindi, English and Bengali through the light and sound shows. In another decision, the Chief Minister said the civic body in Puri will be upgraded to a municipal corporation. Majhi said all the processes related to this will be started on Saturday. 'The government has decided to upgrade the Puri Municipality to a municipal corporation. Puri Mahanagara Nigam will be formed with areas in Puri town and the surrounding panchayats,' he said. The proposed Puri Municipal Corporation will have about seven to eight panchayats in Puri Sadar and Brahmagiri blocks, he added. At present, there are five municipal corporations in Odisha -- Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela. Puri will be the sixth one, officials said.

All set for Mega Parent-Teacher Meet on July 10

Tirupati: The State government has decided to conduct parent teacher meeting this year also to foster better understanding between students, parents and teachers. The mega 'Parent Teacher Meeting' will be held in this direction on July 10 across the district. Speaking to the media on Saturday, District Collector Dr S Venkateswar stated that this event follows last year's successful meet organised by the State Education department. At the district level, the programme will be conducted under the supervision of the in-charge Minister Angani Satya Prasad. The event will see widespread participation from elected representatives including MLAs, MLCs, MPs, ZPTC, MPTC members, MPPs, and Sarpanches. The programme will be simultaneously held in all government and private schools, government and private junior colleges, and intermediate colleges across the district. Dr Venkateswar said that the meet was aimed at building mutual understanding among students, teachers and parents. 'It will be conducted in a festive environment with a focus on holistic educational development,' he said. The event will start at 9 am and continue until lunch, where parents, students, and public representatives will participate in a community meal. Feedback on the mid-day meal will also be collected from parents, and a special menu has already been finalised for the day. As part of the event, Holistic Progress Reports of students will be handed over to their parents. 'Sarvepalli Radhakrishna kits' have already been distributed to students in the district. Children participating in the event will wear government-issued uniforms, and the 'Thalliki Vandanam' amount has already been deposited into mothers' accounts. For those with Aadhaar-related technical issues, the district will ensure the pending amounts are credited within 2-3 weeks, provided the Aadhaar details are updated by July 10. Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam Par', the event will also include a tree plantation drive, where students will plant a sapling in the name of their mother. The social forestry and education departments will ensure adequate sapling supply to all schools. Private school managements are also being engaged to ensure their participation. In case of space constraints, schools are encouraged to collaborate and hold the programme jointly at a common venue. The Collector noted that the health department will inform parents about students' health status as part of the programme. The meeting was attended by RIO Rajasekhar, Samagra Siksha Superintendent Suresh and other officials.
