The Comrades Marathon Association has condemned incidents of abuse hurled at Israeli runners at Sunday's event.
"Our mission is to host a safe and inclusive event for all participants. We regret any instances where individuals may have felt unsafe or targeted, regardless of nationality, race, religion or political affiliation," the CMA said.
On Sunday, a group of pro-Palestine supporters held a peaceful demonstration in Sherwood, however when Israeli runners were making their way past the area, they were verbally attacked.
The CMA said it does not condone any form of discrimination, harassment, or conduct that compromises the dignity or safety of any runner.

"Further to this, we urge those engaging or commenting publicly to verify facts before circulating claims that are inaccurate or misleading," the CMA added.
"The Comrades Marathon is a race, not a rally. The CMA is, and has always been, politically neutral, and we ask all participants, spectators, volunteers and partners to respect that position. Operational protocols, including those governing conduct along the route, are continuously reviewed to ensure alignment with our values and relevant legal frameworks," the CMA said.
It said before and after Sunday's event, organisers met with various stakeholders and made it clear that the marathon is not a platform for partisanship.
"The essence of the Comrades lies in its ability to connect people across divides – national, racial, religious and political – through a shared celebration of human perseverance and possibility. It is this legacy we are committed to protecting. We recognise that global events can shape individual experiences and perspectives, and we hold space for that, but our role is not to resolve international conflict – it is to provide a platform for unity through sport," the CMA stated.
The South African Jewish Board has also condemned the incidents.
"The harassment of these athletes exemplifies the anti-Israeli movement's unwanted and unconstitutional exploitation of public spaces to antagonise and intimidate those who challenge its narrow political bent. These theatrical displays do not contribute to improving or saving a single life in Gaza," said the SA Jewish Board of Deputies national director, Wendy Kahn.
The athletes' inclusion in the annual race was slammed by the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in KwaZulu-Natal.

South Africa's strategies to combat US 30 percent import tariff

The government says it has put various alternative mechanisms in place to avert the proposed US 30% tariff on South African exports. Image: Lee Rondganger/IOL The South African government says it has put various alternative mechanisms in place to avert the proposed US 30% import tariff wall on South African exporters ahead of the August 1 deadline. South Africa is among several countries facing punitive tariffs from the US as it moves to protect its own manufacturer and labour force. US President Donald Trump announced the tariffs in April, but delayed them for 90 days to allow countries to negotiate better deals. South Africa has been trying to negotiate a trade deal with the US since May but is yet to agree on terms. On Tuesday, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) said it remains committed to the cause and awaits substantive feedback from the US on the final status of the country's framework deal. Next Stay Close ✕ The department said it has been in a period of intense negotiations with the US and had signed a condition precedent document and 'have readied our inputs for entry into the template which is to follow from the US'. 'Despite the challenges that have been presented by this period, we have put our best foot forward, bringing together the subject specialists within our ranks that have dug deep to ensure that our country is adequately prepared for a number of potential scenarios,' DTIC said. However, the DA said this was deeply concerning and raised far more questions than answers, adding that the offer on the table would not satisfy a US administration that is driving a hard bargain. Asked what measures have been put in place to avoid the worst scenario, the DTIC spokesperson Kaamil Alli said the department has also been working actively with industry associations and export councils to explore alternative markets for 'our' goods. Alli added that the department was also working with the National Treasury and other departments on a support package for affected industries. While Allie did not reveal further details regarding this, it has been reported that the government has offered the motor vehicle and agricultural sectors alternative markets and possible Treasury-backed tax incentives, which is a two-pronged contingency plan to keep production lines humming should the US impose a 30% tariff on the country's exports. According to the DA, this is meant to make up for DTIC Minister Parks Tau and the ANC's failed foreign policy. 'Instead of securing a trade deal, Tau now expects our Treasury to borrow or tax South Africans more to pay for the costs of the ANC's association of our state with rogue nations like Iran. The National Treasury and by implication South Africans cannot be the funder of last resort if Tau fails to reach a US deal by midnight,' said Mark Burke, the party's spokesperson on Finance. On Wednesday, Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, told journalists that the country must look for alternative markets should the US impose high tariffs, particularly in relation to critical minerals. Mantashe added that while diplomatic engagements with the US continues, the country must also diversify its trading partners. 'The diplomatic discipline will engage the US, but it doesn't stop us from diversifying our markets. If the US imposes high tariffs, we must look for alternative markets. Our biggest trading partner is China, it's not the US. ''The US is number two. It means that if they impose heavy tariffs on us, we must look more for alternative markets in the world. They are there. They are available. We must exploit them,'' Mantashe said. The DTIC's proposed deal features a number of areas, including importing 750-100 petajoules of Liquified Natural Gas for a 10 year period, unlocking $12 billion. Enabling agricultural market access by simplifying US poultry exports under the 2016 tariff rate quota and unlocking approximately $91m million in trade. South African firms committed to invest $3.3bn in US industries such as mining and metals recycling, while both governments agreed to pursue joint investment in critical minerals, pharmaceuticals and agri-machinery. Alli added that while many issues have been addressed, the challenges however, are around agricultural imports which need to meet health and sanitary standards.

KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane hits back at corruption claims, calls allegations a 'smear campaign'

KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane says corruption and nepotism claims are part of a political smear campaign, and she remains focused on delivering quality healthcare to the people of KwaZulu-Natal. Image: Supplied KZN MEC of Health Nomagugu Simelane said she won't play politics with people's lives or allow personal attacks to derail the work of her department. 'I will not play politics with people's lives. I will not lower myself to the level of those who seek to destabilise, distract, and destroy,' she said in a statement addressing a series of allegations that have surfaced on social media, in the press, and on various platforms in recent weeks. Simelane described the claims as part of a 'targeted campaign of misinformation' aimed at damaging her reputation and that of her family. She said she had remained largely silent until now because she was focused on delivering the province's critical health budget, which she tabled on Tuesday. IOL previously reported that the MK Party had called for Simelane's resignation, accusing her of corruption and alleging that her family business, Kwazi-Gugu Investments CC, received duplicate payments worth R1.42 million from the provincial Agriculture Department. The MK Party further claimed that her family continued receiving state financial support while she served as Health MEC, and linked her to a 2008 farm loan granted by Ithala Bank, allegations Simelane has dismissed as 'false and malicious.' 'Now that the budget has been delivered, and with it, real plans to strengthen our healthcare system, I want to take a moment to set the record straight and address the stories that are currently circulating,' she said. Simelane defended her department's stance on hospital access following protests related to the treatment of undocumented foreign nationals. She said her duty is to uphold the Constitution, not to discriminate. 'Every person, regardless of their nationality, has the right to emergency medical care. Denying that would be illegal and inhumane,' she said. She condemned protesters who blocked hospitals, calling the act unacceptable and dangerous. 'Peaceful protest is allowed, but blocking access to hospitals is not,' she said. 'That's why we worked to keep our facilities open and safe for patients.' While she acknowledged that illegal immigration is a national issue, she insisted healthcare 'must never, ever be considered a privilege, but a fundamental right to be enjoyed equitably by all.' Responding to allegations that she interfered with Vuma FM, leading to the removal of former broadcaster Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, Simelane said: 'Let's be absolutely clear. I did not instruct or influence Vuma FM to fire Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma. ''The station itself has confirmed that her contract expired as part of its internal HR processes,'' she said. I respect media freedom, but this freedom comes with responsibility to report fairly and accurately.' Simelane said she had taken legal steps to stop the 'spread of lies' and to protect the integrity of her office. Furthermore, Simelane also addressed accusations around her family's farm, saying the loan it received from Ithala Bank was issued in 2008, years before she held any influential role in agriculture. 'In 2008, I was a junior official employed within a completely different department. I had resigned from the family company in 2004 – four years before that loan was issued,' she said. She emphasised that her family applied for agriculture support through legal departmental processes, with no influence from her.' She maintained that the support her family farm received through the Department of Agriculture followed 'open and regulated processes' and that she had no influence in those decisions. 'These applications were approved – without any input or involvement whatsoever from me,' Simelane said. 'All procurement was managed through the department's own supply chain processes and chosen service providers.' She said a full and detailed report has been submitted to the Premier. On nepotism allegations, Simelane defended her siblings' qualifications and appointments. 'My sister was appointed to her position through a transparent process. I was not involved in any way. She earned her place,' she said. She described claims of fake CVs as 'false and desperate,' adding that her family 'has taken advantage of one thing: education.' Regarding her brother, she added: 'He is a finance professional with 15 years of experience and verifiable formal qualifications.' 'I do not do nepotism. I do service,' Simelane insisted. 'These personal attacks won't divert me from working in accordance with my mandate: to improve healthcare delivery for every person in this province,' she said. 'While the noise gets louder, so will my commitment to doing the work. Because that's what real leadership looks like.' Simelane said she believes the flurry of allegations, surfacing around the same time, are politically motivated and part of a deliberate smear campaign. 'This past weekend saw an array of sensational rumours emerge online, blatantly designed to mislead the public and shake confidence in the work of my department,' she said. 'They are part of a calculated and mischievous smear campaign.' Despite this, Simelane said she remains focused on delivering health services to the province and serving the people of KwaZulu-Natal. 'Leadership should never be determined by threats or intimidation, but by truth, service, and due process,' she said. 'I will not bow to those tactics. ''I will continue to do what I have done since 2004: serve, lead, and strive for a stronger, fairer, and more dignified healthcare system in KwaZulu-Natal.' Minister Tau under fire for controversial IDC board appointments

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau says he will reply to specific questions from MPs at the meeting of the portfolio committee in connection with the appointment of the Industrial Development Corporation board members. Image: Supplied Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau is digging in his heels in providing answers in connection with the appointment of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) board members. This comes after Tau told DA MP Toby Chance and EFF MP Sinawo Thambo that his reply to specific questions will be provided at the meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition. He stated that he had been invited to brief the portfolio committee on the appointment of the IDC board on July 22, but the meeting was postponed. 'Upon the rescheduling of the meeting, specific questions will be directly responded to during the meeting or after if there is still a need,' he said in his standard response. Next Stay Close ✕ On Thursday, Chance accused Tau of being evasive and deviating from his usual detailed responses. 'He has provided no information at all; ministers are obligated to respond in writing to written questions, which is unsatisfactory,' said Chance. 'We normally get detailed responses from him. This time, he seems very evasive in not providing answers,' he added. Last month, the Cabinet announced a new eight-member board for the IDC, which included ANC-aligned members such as former ministers Sydney Mufamadi and Ayanda Dlodlo, and former KwaZulu-Natal premier and now Higher Education Deputy Minister Nomusa Dube-Ncube. The Cabinet had also appointed Sam Bhembe, who is reportedly involved in a court battle with the finance institution over a R70 million debt. The IDC board appointments happened at a time when there was a public outcry over the appointment of chairpersons for the boards of Sector and Education Training Authorities, which have since been cancelled. At the time, Thambo requested an urgent committee meeting, and committee chairperson Mzwandile Masina wrote to Tau indicating it was prudent that they receive a briefing on the process followed in the IDC board appointments. Thambo also sent questions to Tau, wanting to know the process followed and the measures his department implemented to safeguard the IDC from undue political influence, among other things. He had expressed concern about a pattern of compromised appointments that was a direct consequence of politically motivated deployments. 'The IDC must not be reduced to a retirement destination for politically connected individuals,' read Thambo's letter to Tau. In his written questions, Chance enquired whether Dube-Ncube informed him she was due to be appointed to the BANKSETA when she was nominated to serve on the IDC board. He also asked whether Tau found it problematic for good governance practice that a board member of an entity that reported would occupy multiple board positions simultaneously, and also enquired about the conflict of interest involving one of the appointed board members. Chance said on Thursday it was concerning that ANC cadres were appointed to serve on the boards regardless their qualifications as if non-ANC people could not be found. 'Unfortunately, it forms a pattern that the ANC does not look beyond its own nursery. There are a lot of qualified people who are in business and who have investment experience. Those are people who should be on the board, not former and washed ANC politicians,' he said. Chance added that he was interested in the conflict of interest that was not revealed involving one of the appointed board members. 'We don't know what that is,' he said. Chance also said a lot was going on in the department, such as the appointment of Sizekhaya as the lottery licence operator and the 30% tariffs imposed by the US on South African goods. 'I think he has a lot on his plate… He has a lot of unanswered questions,' he said. 'I wrote to him and put a Promotion of Access to Information Act application last week to request the record of decisions by the evaluation and the adjudication committees on the reasons why they chose Sizekhaya. I have not received a response yet,' he said.
