Celtic star stunned by Rangers legend in red-faced return to action against minnows
Alistair Johnston has back on the grass for Canada after missing his crucial spot kick at Hampden against Aberdeen
Alistair Johnston had another nightmare on his return to action as 77-year-old former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat pulled off a shock against Canada.
The Hoops defender missed the crucial final penalty in the Scottish Cup Final which meant Aberdeen won the trophy at Hampden last month.
He was nursing a minor back injury and recently tied the knot with new wife Peyton before heading off on honeymoon to St Lucia.
But it was on another Caribbean he returned to action this weekend at the Gold Cup against minnows Curacao, who are now managed by Advocaat, after he came out of retirement for the fifth time to take charge of his eighth international country earlier this year.
But after coming on as a late sub, he gave the ball away to former PSV Eindhoven striker Jeremy Antonisse deep into injury time who netted to claim a remarkable 1-1 draw in Houston and kick off off scenes of celebration for the tiny nation.
Advocaat - who has now managed the Netherlands three times, Belgium, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Iraq, UAE and now Curacao - said: "That was a great achievement for us to get a draw against a huge country like Canada. But it was the least we deserved and credit to the players."
Canada had gone ahead inside the opening 10 minutes thanks to Nathan Saliba's early strike but Antonisse grabbed a goal in the fouth minute of added time to spark wild scenes.
The result leaves Canada top of the section with four points from two games and Curacao currently sit third with two points on the board. They trail Honduras in second spot in the section by a point.

Rangers star bids emotional farewell to club as he confirms spell has ‘come to an end'
RANGERS will be hoping to shift some players out of the club this summer. But one man who doesn't appear to have an Ibrox future is on his way BACK. 3 Joe Cifuentes played 29 times in the Greek Super League for Aris Thessaloniki Credit: Alamy 3 He now looks set to return to Rangers Credit: Willie Vass Jose Cifuentes was a key transfer target for Michael Beale when he was Rangers manager. The Ecuador international signed a pre-contract deal in the summer of 2023 to join the Light Blues the following January following the conclusion of the MLS season. But the Gers would get the deal done early, paying LAFC £1.2million to land Cifuentes just as the 2023/24 campaign was getting started. The midfielder, capped 21 times by his country, struggled. He made just nine appearances in the league and wasn't able to make much of an impact. Beale was sacked as Gers boss at the beginning of October and Cifuentes found opportunities hard to come by under his replacement Philippe Clement. In February 2024, just six months after joining the Gers, Cifuentes was on the way out. He joined Cruzeiro on loan but his time in Brazil would also come to an end after just six months. That loan agreement was terminated and Cifuentes then headed for Greece, joining Aris Thessaloniki on a season-long loan last August. He would become a key man for Aris, appearing 29 times in the league. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked The club secured European football after finishing fifth and they'll enter the Conference League qualifiers. Aris had the option to sign Cifuentes permanently in a £3m deal but they missed the deadline at the end of May to make it happen. They indicated to Rangers they couldn't afford the fee and re-entered negotiations with the Light Blues. But no agreement was reached and Cifuentes has now bid an emotional farewell to Aris. He'll now head back to Rangers and looks set to show new boss Russell Martin what he can do. Taking to Instagram, Cifuentes said: "Thank you, Aris! 3 "Teammates, coaching staff, fans, and club personnel: It has been a pleasure to share this season with all of you—a season full of challenges that has now come to an end. "On behalf of myself and my family, I thank you for everything we have experienced, and I wish you all the best for the upcoming season!" Cifuentes still has two years left to run on his Rangers contract. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Celtic tipped to sign Hearts star before he's even kicked a ball as former Rangers man tells rivals what they want to hear
Andrei Kanchelskis believes Celtic are the ultimate goal for anyone coming to Scotland Islam Chesnokov has been tipped for a future move to Celtic – before he's even kicked a ball for Hearts. It comes from former Rangers star Andrei Kanchelskis who believes the Hoops are ahead of his old club by a 'wide margin' – which makes them the ultimate goal for anyone coming to Scotland. Hearts have agreed a pre-contract deal with Kazakhstan international Chesnokov, but are trying to do a deal with his club FC Tobol to land him before then. Kanchelskis, who won 59 caps for the Soviet Union, the CIS and Russia, was at Ibrox for four years from 1998 and ended up winning six major trophies with Rangers. He's now in charge of Russian second tier outfit Dynamo Bryansk and was asked about why Chesnokov has opted to move to Hearts instead of going to Russia, where there was plenty of interest in him. Kanchelskis explained: "The Scottish league is quite high level and there is a lot of quality there. It's a very physical league. But the problem is this is only a league with two teams - Celtic and Rangers. And Celtic are leading by a wide margin. "Another five or six, including Hearts, are fighting for places in the European competitions. But the main advantage for Islam Chesnokov of moving to Scotland is the opportunity to be noticed by Celtic or English clubs and eventually sign for them. This is an opportunity for progress. "Yes, the level of the Russian Premier League is clearly higher than in Scotland, but there's no Europe for him there and no one will notice him in Russia. "So if it was me, I would have done what Islam did and moved to Scotland too." Credit: PA Having secured the sensational return of Kieran Tierney several months ago, Celtic have since added backup goalkeeper Ross Doohan and winger Benjamin Nygren to the squad. But the Hoops are far from done and Brendan Rodgers could be about to imminently bolster his defence. Centre-back Hayato Inamura is one of two Japanese players who have emerged as Celtic targets this transfer window. The 23-year old currently plays for Albirex Niigata - but it looks like he will play his final game for the club TODAY. Japanese outlet Sponichi say that the clash with Machida Zelvia will be his last for the side. The report claims an agreement for the move has been reached, with Inamura heading to Europe this coming week to complete all of the formalities. It says he'll undergo a medical 'early next week' before signing. A move to Celtic would cap a quickfire rise in the game for Inamura, who has only been playing senior league football for six months. He would become the latest in a growing list of players from Japan to represent Celtic. Shunsuke Nakamura made himself a firm Parkhead favourite two decades ago, with more recent acquisitions Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi all making a stunning impact on Scottish football. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up Inamura might not be the only recruit from the this summer at Celtic Park. We told you how the Hoops were eyeing a move for the 25-year old frontman who hit 19 league goals in the 2024 season. Kawasaki Frontale are the club Celtic signed Hatate from back in January 2022.
