Pune civic body snaps 79 illegal connections from road light poles
The action was taken after an eight-year-old girl reportedly came in contact with a hoarding illegally connected to a PMC-maintained streetlight pole and died on June 2.
The Sinhgad Road ward office topped the list with 15 illegal power connections removed, followed by Ahmednagar Road (13), Kothrud-Bavdhan (9), Kondhwa Yevalewadi (8), Warje Karve Nagar (7), Hadapsar (7), Dhole Patil Road (4), Aundh-Baner (2), Ghole road (2), Dhankawadi Sahakarnagar (2), Bhavani Peth (4), Bibvewadi (4), Wanwowrie-Ramtekadi (1) and Kasba-Vashrambaug (1).
These connections are often used by roadside vendors, unauthorized dwellings, political banners—and most controversially, by illuminated publicity hoardings across the city, said officials.
Manisha Shekatkar, chief superintendent engineer of PMC's electrical department, said, 'The 'I Love' hoardings put up at many traffic junctions as part of city beautification are now being checked for illegal electricity use.
'We have received several complaints that these hoardings are tapping electricity illegally from nearby street poles without any approved connection or meter,' she said.
'We are inspecting each site and will disconnect any illegal connections immediately. So far, we have not filed any police complaints, but if we find these illegal connections again, we will take police action,' she said.
According to PMC, Pune has over 1.65 lakh streetlight poles, many of which are still wired using overhead cables—making them easy targets for illegal tapping. The lack of robust earthing, the absence of residual current devices (RCDs), and tampering by unauthorized users have turned these poles into potential death traps, especially during the monsoon.
The recent tragedy was waiting to happen, said Sudhir Kulkarni, a civic activist. 'Even after multiple electrocution incidents in the past, PMC failed to upgrade its infrastructure or monitor illegal usage. Now, after a child's death, the administration is forced into action,' he said.
Swapnil Sutar, a resident of the Sinhagad Road area, said, 'With the monsoon coming, we want the authorities not just to punish those responsible but also to make lasting changes to keep everyone safe.'
'On Sinhagad Road, many street vendors sell vegetables and food using illegal electricity connections from streetlights. PMC should carry out a combined anti-encroachment drive along with the electrical department to stop this,' he said.
The crackdown will continue in the coming days, focusing on busy areas and main junctions with decorative structures, said officials.

Days after the Bombay High Court refused to restrain the Tree Authority from felling and replanting trees for the Riverfront Development Project on the Mula-Mutha river, the petitioners have urged the people of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to 'stay vigilant' against any further tree felling or transplantation from the Sangamwadi bridge to the Mundhwa bridge. Pune-based Shalvi Pawar, Tanmayi S, and others have made the call after the court granted liberty to the petitioners to raise objections if any more proposals are made to the Tree Authority for more unlawful tree-cutting under the Riverfront Development Project (RFD). The PIL, which had been filed three-and-a-half months ago, was disposed of after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) told the court that six separate permissions had been granted for cutting 1,302 trees and transplanting 1,843 trees along the 9-km stretch of the Mula-Mutha river. Of these, 997 trees had already been cut and 859 trees transplanted, and 'further work is in progress'. As part of the RFD project, 11,000 trees of the 22,150 in the project area will be felled and 11,150 trees will be transplanted. The project will also include the planting of 30,000 trees of local varieties in the area. PMC stated that alongside cutting or transportation of trees, the execution of the project work of the RFD was also going on at the site. According to the court order, 'The learned counsel for the PMC submits that under the project, the Corporation has planted 5,100 trees up to April 2025 and, from April 27, 2025 to 11 July 2025, 2,369 trees were planted and that they shall ensure that the aforesaid trees are maintained properly'. Pawar, a professional ecological conservationist, says, 'We need every citizen to be very alert and inform us on the social media pages of 'Pune River Revival', a citizen-led movement that works for the rights of Pune rivers and riparian trees. People can directly post on Facebook page and Instagram of 'Pune River Revival' if they spot tree felling anywhere near the river-side'. The organisation comprises thousands of environmentally sensitive people who work to preserve the natural spaces of Pune.' The group will reach out to people over social media and direct engagement. Tanmayi says that she was prompted to file the PIL after visiting RFD sites and being disappointed about the destruction to the riparian zones. 'If the river actually becomes clean, the kind of biodiversity that we can have is beyond imagination. I was born and brought up in Pune. I want to have the relationship that my parents and my grandparents had with the rivers. I want to be able to swim in rivers, that is what drives me,' she says. Team formed to arrest son of Patna mayor: SSP
Patna: Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Patna, Kartikeya K Sharma, said on Monday that a police team has been formed to arrest Patna mayor Sita Sahu's son, Shishir Kumar, for allegedly abusing and threatening the councillors during July 11 general body meeting of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC). A case was recently registered against Shishir at Gandhi Maidan police station based on the statement of ward councillor Jeet Kumar. Talking to reporters, the SSP said the police are actively working and he will be arrested soon. "The charges in case filed against Shishir includes that of interfering in govt work, physical assault, and several other allegations. The move to arrest him has been prompted considering his criminal history, the gravity of recent accusations and also chances that he could intimidate the councillor again. He has been evading arrest after the police went to his residence on Sunday morning. Different teams are conducting raids for his arrest," he said. Gandhi Maidan police, along with different police teams, went to the mayor's residence in the Alamganj police station area for his arrest on Sunday. However, the locals staged a protest. Taking advantage of the situation, Shishir escaped from the house. The SSP said investigations are underway regarding non-cooperation of the mayor during the police's visit to her residence. The controversy started after the mayor's son brought bouncers and weapons during the ninth general body meeting of the PMC, which was held on July 11. Probe ordered into armed disruption at PMC meeting
Patna: Amid growing tensions following the disruption of the Patna Municipal Corporation's (PMC) general board meeting, municipal commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar on Saturday announced a probe into the presence of armed outsiders at the July 11 meeting even as he expressed hope that Patna would secure a better ranking in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2024. "In Friday's meeting, criminals were brought from outside Patna with weapons. Bouncers and arms were brought to commit hooliganism. Such things cannot be tolerated in govt meetings. No one can scare me with guns and bouncers. This is Gandhi's country. Weapons have no place in a democratic society," he said. Though he did not name Patna mayor Sita Sahu's son, Shishir Kumar, the commissioner said a letter had been issued barring him from PMC activities. "Many types of criminal cases are also going on against him. Therefore, his presence in all the activities of the civic body is banned," the letter read. A request for prohibitory orders against Shishir has also been sent to the Patna district magistrate. Parashar added, "Security breaches are being addressed, and CCTV footage from the venue is being examined." Despite the controversy, the commissioner highlighted the corporation's ongoing efforts under its 'Chakachak Patna' drive and its hope for a three-star rating in the garbage-free city category. "Patna has been invited for the award. We will know the scoring and the city's ranking on July 17," he said. He also cited several achievements like elimination of 658 garbage-vulnerable points, launch of a 'manhole ambulance' service, real-time chatbot support and initiatives like 'Sadak Shatru' and 'Mera Shehar, Meri Jawabdehi'. Patna, he added, had ranked fourth in public feedback and previously earned one-star certification and a water plus tag.
