Pune Riverfront Development Project: Petitioners urge public to stay alert against tree felling after Bombay HC setback

Indian Express15-07-2025
Days after the Bombay High Court refused to restrain the Tree Authority from felling and replanting trees for the Riverfront Development Project on the Mula-Mutha river, the petitioners have urged the people of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to 'stay vigilant' against any further tree felling or transplantation from the Sangamwadi bridge to the Mundhwa bridge.
Pune-based Shalvi Pawar, Tanmayi S, and others have made the call after the court granted liberty to the petitioners to raise objections if any more proposals are made to the Tree Authority for more unlawful tree-cutting under the Riverfront Development Project (RFD).
The PIL, which had been filed three-and-a-half months ago, was disposed of after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) told the court that six separate permissions had been granted for cutting 1,302 trees and transplanting 1,843 trees along the 9-km stretch of the Mula-Mutha river. Of these, 997 trees had already been cut and 859 trees transplanted, and 'further work is in progress'.
As part of the RFD project, 11,000 trees of the 22,150 in the project area will be felled and 11,150 trees will be transplanted. The project will also include the planting of 30,000 trees of local varieties in the area.
PMC stated that alongside cutting or transportation of trees, the execution of the project work of the RFD was also going on at the site. According to the court order, 'The learned counsel for the PMC submits that under the project, the Corporation has planted 5,100 trees up to April 2025 and, from April 27, 2025 to 11 July 2025, 2,369 trees were planted and that they shall ensure that the aforesaid trees are maintained properly'.
Pawar, a professional ecological conservationist, says, 'We need every citizen to be very alert and inform us on the social media pages of 'Pune River Revival', a citizen-led movement that works for the rights of Pune rivers and riparian trees. People can directly post on Facebook page and Instagram of 'Pune River Revival' if they spot tree felling anywhere near the river-side'.
The organisation comprises thousands of environmentally sensitive people who work to preserve the natural spaces of Pune.'
The group will reach out to people over social media and direct engagement.
Tanmayi says that she was prompted to file the PIL after visiting RFD sites and being disappointed about the destruction to the riparian zones. 'If the river actually becomes clean, the kind of biodiversity that we can have is beyond imagination. I was born and brought up in Pune. I want to have the relationship that my parents and my grandparents had with the rivers. I want to be able to swim in rivers, that is what drives me,' she says.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the RFD project in March 2022, almost five years after Pune Municipal Corporation prepared its detailed project report (DPR) to beautify the 44-km-long river stretch of Mula and Mutha passing through the city. After overcoming a legal battle posed by environmentalists and citizens' groups, the civic administration has given a major push to its implementation.

Rs 100 core drug cartel busted by Delhi Police spans across continents

New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) A drug cartel that operated like a call centre from Africa with online delivery based mechanism, and was busted here had links to several countries including Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the United Kingdom, Delhi Police claimed on Friday. Five African nationals have been arrested so far and drugs worth more than Rs 100 crore in the international market were seized in the operation, police said. The syndicate allegedly headed by Nigeria-based kingpin Callistus alias Kalis spanned across continents, they added. Additional Deputy Commisioner of Police (Crime) Mangesh Kashyap, the cartel received operated through a central command in Nigeria, where handlers received orders from Indian-clients via fake call centre numbers and social media and they relayed them to delivery agents based in Delhi. 'Cocaine, MDMA and ganja were trafficked using encrypted messaging apps, forged documents and a structured distribution network of Indian-based African nationals. The cartel's Indian arm operated using a logistics model inspired by food delivery apps. Deliveries were made based on customer's live locations," he said. Investigations revealed that the syndicate maintained detailed ledgers of transactions, with records dating back to 2019 showing monthly sales exceeding Rs 1 crore in areas like Vasant Kunj alone, the officer added. Delivery and cash handoffs were designed to maintain multiple operational layers, insulating the top brass from exposure. To maintain anonymity, delivery agents wore specific markers such as checked shirts and black helmets. Orders were processed through a centralised 'call centre" run from Nigeria, with arrested operatives revealing that if one delivery agent was caught, they were quickly replaced to avoid disruption in the chain. The case came to light on June 13, when police intercepted a suspicious parcel at a courier facility in Moti Nagar and seized 895 grams of MDMA. This led them to Kameni Philipp, who had a fake Cameroonian passport, and he was found in possession of more than two kilograms of pure cocaine molded into waterproof bricks. During interrogation, Philipp revealed that the internal functioning of the cartel, including how UK-based phone numbers were used to mask the origin of instructions and how vehicles were identified using car registration numbers for swift handovers. Philip alias Tall Guy, another delivery agent, operated in South Delhi and Saket and followed instructions received over social media calls. He also disclosed that payments and stock pickups were managed through anonymous drop locations to shield higher-ups. Based on further leads, police arrested three more foreign nationals — Adore, Kelechi Chikwe alias Victor and Ibe Chinedu Austin — from various locations across Delhi A total of 2.7 kilogram of cocaine, 1 kilogram of MDMA, more than 1 kilogram of cannabis and Rs 2.7 lakh in cash were seized from the accused, police said. Adore, who ran the drug hub from a makeshift kitchen in Chhatarpur, disclosed that he had received more than seven kilograms of cocaine from Kalis and laundered the proceeds through through Nigerian shell firms and hawala channels. Forged passports from Nigeria, Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire were also recovered by the police team. The syndicate allegedly smuggled Colombian cocaine into India using Indian women couriers — believed to have lower risk profile at International airports — and then adulterated the drugs locally to increase yield five fold. Police said the cartel had generated more than Rs 85 crore through its India operations in just the past six months. Separate courier-based channels were used to export MDMA abroad, while hawala networks were employed to launder and remit drug proceeds to Nigeria, police added. Efforts are on to trace other operatives and financial links. Delhi Police has also initiated communication with foreign law enforcement agencies for international coordination, officials said. Two ATM looters from Mewat held after encounter in Delhi

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) After a brief chase and an encounter, the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested two wanted members of an interstate Mewati gang involved in multiple ATM break-ins on Thursday, an official said on Friday. Both the accused, Sazid (23) and Adil (27), residents of Mathura and Palwal in Haryana, respectively, were on a bike when they were signalled to stop by the police. They tried to flee and, after a brief chase and an exchange of fire, both were arrested near the Jaitpur-Kalindi Kunj Pusta road around 10 pm, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Amit Kaushik said. Both were injured in the encounter and are currently undergoing treatment in a hospital, the officer added. Two pistols with live cartridges, a total of Rs 48,500 looted during a recent ATM break-in in Siliguri in West Bengal and a stolen bike from Delhi have been recovered, he added. According to the officer, the Special Cell had been tracking Sazid and his gang for the past six months. He is wanted in connection with several ATM loot and arms trafficking cases in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi. Adil is wanted in cases in Gujarat and West Bengal. Police said the breakthrough in the case came following the January arrest of a Mewat-based criminal, Jamshed, by the Special Cell team. Jamshed, who was wanted in the 2012 murder of a Delhi Police head constable, Yashpal, following an alleged cow theft in Baba Haridas Nagar, had allegedly disclosed during interrogation that he got the weapon from Sazid. He allegedly also accused Sazid of being involved in multiple ATM robberies across states. 'Since then, police teams camped in the Mewat region and developed information about Sazid's operations. Sazid and his associates would travel to target states in trucks, carrying gas cylinders and tools required for cutting ATMs. 'After conducting reconnaissance and stealing local vehicles for the operation, they would abandon the vehicles post-robbery and return to Mewat via different routes," the DCP said. On July 24, the team received information about Sazid and Adil's movement in the Madanpur Khadar area and laid a trap on the Jaitpur-Kalindi Kunj Pusta road. Sazid revealed that he had previously been arrested by the police in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab in connection with ATM robberies. Following the arrest of his associates by Mathura Police, he shifted his base to Nuh to evade arrest. Police also said Adil confessed to being involved in multiple ATM loots. Somy Ali believes in Tanushree Dutta's allegations of being harassed at home: 'Her mental health...'

Actress Somy Ali, who has always supported actress Tanushree Dutta, this time too, she believes in her after Dutta alleges of being harassed at home. Somy, who runs a US-based NGO called 'No More tears' and works to save and rehabilitate victims of domestic abuse and rape, claimed that she believes Tanushree as she has lived on the other side of silence. Tanushree Dutta's Mental Health Somy told IANS, 'Tanushree spoke of being harassed. Of being gaslit. Of a spy planted as a maid in her home, of attempted poisoning, of systematic defamation, and of rampant misogyny disguised as stardom. Some in the media ridiculed her. Others discredited her mental health. But what few dared ask was: What if it's true? What if Tanushree's story isn't an outlier but a rule?' Somy Ali supports Tanushree Dutta She stressed that Bollywood has long suffered from a toxic immunity culture, where powerful men are treated like gods, and survivors are treated like liabilities. 'I know. I was once part of that world. I've witnessed women offered 'auditions' that weren't about acting. I've seen women ostracized for saying 'no.' I've watched survivors suffer mental breakdowns while the perpetrators received national awards,' Somy added. She went on to say, 'And yet when someone like Tanushree dares to lift the veil, the collective response isn't support, it's damage control. Public relations machinery goes into overdrive. Character assassination begins. Anonymous sources leak half-truths. And worst of all, the survivor is pathologized. 'She's paranoid.', 'She's unstable'. 'She's imagining things.' It's the oldest trick in the abuser's playbook.' Tanushree Dutta is telling truth… Somy further stated that although Tanushree's claims might seem irrational, it is possible that she is telling the truth. On Tuesday, Tanushree posted a video on social media where she was seen weeping and asking for help. She was heard saying, 'Guys, I'm being harassed in my own home. I'm being harassed in my own home. I just called the cops. I got worried and called the police. The police came'. 'I'm sick and tired of this harassment!! It's been going on since 2018 #metoo Aaj fed up hokar maine police ko call kiya (I got fed up and called the cops). Please someone help me. Do something before it's too late,' Tanushree added. Tanushree Dutta on receiving threats like Sushant Singh Rajput In her interview with TV9, Tanushree Dutta also mentioned the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, saying that what happened to him is now happening to her. She stated, 'The people who are after me are connected to Nana Patekar and his Bollywood associates. They are the ones who have sent people to follow me. I suspect them. People would come to the hotels where I was staying and knock on my room door to harass me. On several occasions, I was even poisoned, and attempts were made to kill me by making me ill – but I survived.' Tanushree Dutta further said, 'The maid who worked in my house was also involved, as she used to mix something in my food. Because of that, my health kept deteriorating. I would remain unconscious for 17–18 hours at a stretch. They tried to drive me insane and kill me.' In an interview to News18 , Dutta urges the government to provide her security. 'This mafia is huge and dangerous, and I fear for my life just like Sushant must have', said the actress.
