11 die in stampede as RCB victory celebrations turn tragic at Bengaluru

The Hindu04-06-2025
What began as a day of rapturous celebration over the IPL victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) turned into one of crushing tragedy in Bengaluru on Wednesday evening when 11 people -- all aged below 40 -- died and 33 were injured when a massive build up of fans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium led to chaos and stampede.
The tragedy unfolded near the gates of the stadium, where thousands of fans had gathered to mark RCB's historic first title win in 18 years. Overcrowding and narrow passageways led to a deadly rush. Mr. Siddaramaiah admitted that while the stadium could hold around 32,000 people, well over 2 lakh had gathered there. Doctors attributed all the deaths to asphyxia, a condition arising when the body is deprived of oxygen, causing unconsciousness or death.

‘Had a touch with death, literally': Matthew Hayden opens up on ‘scary incident' in Dharamsala during India-Pakistan conflict

The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) had to be briefly suspended due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The suspension started with a match between the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings literally being abandoned after 10.1 overs were bowled in Dharamsala. In the months since, there have been a few accounts from players, notably Australia women's captain Alyssa Healy, whose husband Mitchell Starc was playing for the Capitals, and now, former Australia batter Matthew Hayden has revealed how the entire incident unfolded for the commentators. 'I'd flown from Mumbai overnight to Delhi because there wasn't a connecting flight with Punjab's home ground (for that game) Dharamsala. Magnificent ground. But by the time I landed in Delhi, there was no airport open,' said Hayden on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast. 'It was at the time that coincided with the incursion of Pakistan back into India and we were talking drones navigating across the skies, taking out ground to air missiles and it was just eerie. We had to take a car via Chandigarh up to Dharamsala. That's a 11 and a half, 12 hour drive. By the time we reached the venue we were told the game was about to proceed.' The first signs of something unusual unfolding were the lights at the stadium going off. While it had seemed like a technical issue on air, eventually the whole stadium went dark and reports emerged of the venue being evacuated due to threat of a drone strike. A number of major Indian cities had done blackout drills during that period. Hayden said that the commentators were told before the match that the lights going out will not be a technical issue. 'But half an hour before we went on air we were given a security message that if the light towers were to to go out, it's not a technical issue. It's actually a sign that the venue has been compromised and there will be an emergency evacuation response and we will proceed,' he said. 'I was mid-sentence with my usual garbage on air and the first light tower goes out so I've let the spectators and fans know that it has gone out. Then the second goes almost immediately. Next minute security came in like a blanket. Dropped my mic literally mid-sentence and we were ushered out of the ground,' he said. Hayden noted that the IPL has been a 'great survivor' considering the myriad events it has managed to see through over the course of its existence. 'It's been a great survivor and it's lasted incredible events historically for India. It got moved in the second year to South Africa due to elections. We had Covid and it seemed to survive that we moved to Dubai over to the middle east,' he said.

Siraj pushes his limit to lead India's fightback

Mumbai: Even in a lengthy series, you can single out moments of inspiration that can prove defining. Mohammed Siraj's unrelenting spell of eight overs before tea on Day 2 at The Oval could prove to be one. The onus is on India as a collective to back up his brilliance. Mohammed Siraj celebrates after taking the wicket of England's Jacob Bethell. (PTI) It was immediately after India had lost the Lord's Test narrowly that Siraj doffed his hat to Ben Stokes for bowling tireless marathon spells. 'If you can learn from someone, there's no shame,' he said. No shame, indeed. Just like his English pace counterpart, the Hyderabad fast bowler strained every sinew and kept running in to keep India in the Test after their batters had folded up for 224 in the first innings. His spell could well prove the spark for an Indian win to level the series 2-all. Fast bowlers have to bowl long spells from time to time. But think of the strain the present-day pacer has to endure in a five-Test series, stuffed in between a great deal of white-ball cricket. After Chris Woakes' freak injury ruled him from further participation at The Oval, Siraj is the only one among the pace pack from either side to play in all the Tests and still in action – 154 overs and counting. When Siraj came on to bowl mid-day, England openers had already played a powerful hand before lunch in 16 overs of mayhem, scoring at over run-a-ball. India's total had begun to look insufficient. While the sun showed up now and then, the pitch still had plenty of juice. India's pacers had to hit their lengths and stay patient. Siraj was among the bowlers who had gone for plenty with the new ball. He needed an early spark and the bowler created it on his own by getting one to nip back in sharply to Ollie Pope (22), trapping him lbw. Siraj stayed patient, not just with his lengths but lines too. He needed to be against Joe Root. There are days when Siraj likes to have a chirp with the batter. Not on Friday. He left it to Prasidh Krishna. All Siraj wanted was to channel his energies on breaking through Root's defence. He had done it before in the series targeting the stumps and on the final ball of the fifth over of his spell, summoned another one of his scrambled seam deliveries that rammed into Root's pads. The lbw decision was reviewed by Root, but DRS confirmed it. England were now four wickets down, but India still had plenty to do. They didn't have a fourth seamer to exploit the green pitch and Shubman Gill had no choice but to stick with Siraj. As if asking Siraj to invoke the spirit of Ishant Sharma's nine-over spell in the Perth Test of 2008, Gill kept throwing the ball to him for one more over. Siraj bowled his 6th, the 7th and then the 8th. While he worked hard, Siraj was able to pin the talented newcomer Jacob Bethell down with a toe crusher following up on a series of wobble seam balls. This time England wouldn't review. It was obvious that the ball would have dismantled Bethell's stumps. Each of Siraj's three wickets were arrowing in on the stumps and went into the scoresheet as leg before dismissals. After starting the day with a spell of 4-0-31-0, Siraj's second spell read 8-1-35-3. He may have bowled more productive spells before, but few where he was the last fast bowler standing in a punishing series played on batter-friendly decks, barring this one. The Oval Test has offered just rewards to the pacers, to try and overcome the pain barrier, bend their backs and make it count. Siraj did with his four-wicket haul, adding Harry Brook in the end. Siraj has taken on the mantle of leading the pace attack in Jasprit Bumrah's absence. Even in Australia where Bumrah was phenomenal, it was Siraj who bowled the most number of overs. Here, with an innings to come, he is already the series' highest wicket taker. So good has Siraj been with his skills and pluck that he would have won an admirer even from the opposing side in Stokes, the injured England skipper watching from the dressing room.

Maharaja T20 Looking For Match Venues As Chinnaswamy Yet To Receive Clearance: Report

Last Updated: M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru hasn't cleared for Maharaja T20 because of an investigation. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru hasn't received clearance to host the Maharaja T20 tournament, with the Karnataka State Cricket Association now searching for venues to play the tournament at, as Chinnaswamy has been mired in controversy for almost two months now, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo. The Maharaja T20 is all set to take place from August 11 to 27 and the KSCA needs to find venues with 10 days in hand. The police have withheld clearance because of the ongoing investigation into the June 4 stampede that occurred near the stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL winning celebrations. An independent CID investigation into the incident, which left 11 dead and over 50 injured, is still underway. The KSCA is now exploring alternative venues, including its facility in Alur on the outskirts of Bengaluru, as well as the Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru. Although Alur boasts excellent drainage and infrastructure, the lack of floodlights poses a significant challenge for broadcasters. According to the report, Alur is all set to host the group games of the six-day women's T20 competition, the Maharani T20, from August 4. The Karnataka State Cricket Association had been considering hosting the women's final at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, but that now appears uncertain as police approval is still pending. As the Karnataka State Cricket Association contends with the prospect of a last-minute venue change, teams have expressed frustration over the financial losses they now stand to incur. Teams had already booked hotels for players and staff based on the assumption that the entire Maharaja T20 would take place in central Bengaluru. Bengaluru is all set to host the opening game of the Women's ODI World Cup, along with one semifinal and the final which has put the state association in massive thought over the pending police case. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
