PHEB awards RM70,200 to Indian SPM top scorers in Penang
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the students, who scored 7As and above across 37 schools, reflect the state government's continued commitment to educational development.
'I believe every young person in Penang has great potential to succeed, provided they remain committed and seize the opportunities for guidance and support available to them.
'The state government continues to prioritise human capital development as outlined in the Penang2030 Vision, with a key focus on enhancing access to quality education for all,' he said during the PHEB Education Carnival for SPM and STPM leavers and the 2024 SPM top scorer appreciation ceremony today.
Also present were PHEB chairman RSN Rayer and his deputy, A Lingeshwaran.
Meanwhile, Lingeshwaran said this marks the second consecutive year the board has recognised outstanding Indian students in Penang, with each of them receiving RM50 for every A obtained in the SPM examination.
He added that between 2023 and May 2025, PHEB has channelled a total of RM883,607 towards educational aid for students pursuing certificate, diploma and degree programmes, as well as welfare assistance.
'Last year, PHEB received an allocation of RM1.5 million from the state government. This year, the amount has increased to RM2 million.
'We hope these funds will continue to benefit the Indian community in Penang, especially our youth pursuing education,' he said.

GENERAL By Muhammad Fawwaz Thaqif Nor Afandi KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- India regards ASEAN as a genuine and trusted partner and has reaffirmed its strong commitment to deepening collaboration with the regional bloc across all areas. Asian stocks attract foreign inflows for second month, but tariff outlook clouds
KUALA LUMPUR: Asian stocks drew foreign inflows for a second straight month in June, buoyed by investors wagering on US Federal Reserve interest rate cuts and a softer US dollar, though gains were capped by jitters over looming US tariffs. Foreign investors bought a net US$6.02 billion worth of equities across Taiwan, South Korea, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines in June, down from US$10.65 billion in the previous month, according to LSEG data. The MSCI Asia ex-Japan Index rose 5.33 per cent last month, its strongest monthly gain since September 2024, outperforming the MSCI World Index, which advanced 4.36 per cent. Upbeat demand for artificial intelligence-linked products, underscored by record highs in chip-maker Nvidia and Broadcom last month, spurred strong foreign inflows into Asia's technology sector, with Taiwan and South Korea – the region's dominant tech exporters – attracting net purchases of US$3.22 billion and US$2.01 billion, respectively. Foreign investors also added a net US$1.69 billion worth of Indian stocks in a third straight month of net purchases. Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese and Philippines stocks, meanwhile, saw net outflows of US$515 million, US$243 million, US$73 million and US$72 million, respectively in the last month. However, analysts remained cautious about the regional outlook, which hinges largely on tariff policy decisions by US President Donald Trump. Earlier this week, Trump postponed his tariff deadline to Aug 1 from the previous July 9 to allow time for negotiations, but simultaneously escalated trade tensions by announcing new duty rates for several countries, including major trading partners Japan and South Korea, and imposing a 50 per cent tariff on copper. While tariff uncertainty now extends to August, the growth impact may be less severe than feared, Goldman Sachs said on Friday, and that final announcements could act as a risk-positive "clearing event" despite higher-than-expected rates.

In a statement today, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that although the population will grow steadily from 2020 to 2059, the growth rate will sharply slow down from 1.7 per cent in 2020 to just 0.1 per cent by 2060. He highlighted that the populations of Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Terengganu and Putrajaya are projected to increase continuously up to 2060. Selangor is expected to remain the most populous state with 8.10 million residents by 2060, followed by Johor (4.99 million) and Sabah (4.89 million). The population projections, covering the period from 2020 to 2060, were published today in conjunction with World Population Day 2025. The report presents detailed demographic changes using 2020 as the baseline. Mohd Uzir noted that nine states are projected to reach their population peaks before the national peak in 2059. These include Kuala Lumpur (2031), Pulau Pinang (2040), Labuan (2041), Selangor (2049), Johor and Kedah (2052), Negeri Sembilan (2054) as well as Perlis and Sarawak (2055). Ethnic composition is also expected to shift, with the Bumiputera population increasing by 10.2 percentage points, from 69.4 per cent in 2020 to 79.4 per cent in 2060. Meanwhile, the Chinese and Indian populations are projected to decline to 14.8 per cent (from 23.2 per cent in 2020) and 4.7 per cent (from 6.7 per cent), respectively. Both male and female populations are projected to grow steadily, with males consistently outnumbering females. The sex ratio is expected to rise from 110 males per 100 females in 2020 to 114 males per 100 females by 2060, Mohd Uzir added. - BERNAMA
