KANGAR: A Perlis local council assistant architectural officer, remanded for seven days since July 15 in a corruption probe, has been released on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) bail. The 37-year-old woman remains under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes alongside a retired enforcement assistant from the same council. Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani confirmed the release but stressed that investigations are ongoing. The case involves approximately RM70,000, with bribes reportedly ranging from RM300 to RM9,000. The retired officer, aged 61, was released earlier on July 17. 'The retired officer, who was remanded with the woman on July 15, was released on July 17,' Mohd Nor Adha told Bernama via WhatsApp. The suspects allegedly solicited bribes from applicants seeking house renovation permit approvals between 2022 and 2024. Payments were reportedly made via bank transfers to the male suspect's account, which was later shared with the female suspect. The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. – Bernama

KANGAR: A local council assistant architectural officer in Perlis, who was remanded for seven days from July 15 to assist in a graft investigation, was released on Monday (July 21) on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) bail. Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani stated that although the 37-year-old woman has been released, investigations into the case are ongoing. The case was believed to involve approximately RM70,000 and allegedly implicated her alongside a retired enforcement assistant from the same council. "The retired officer, who was remanded with the woman on July 15, was released on July 17," he said in a brief message to Bernama via WhatsApp on Monday. On July 15, the media reported that the woman and the 61-year-old man were suspected of soliciting and receiving bribes ranging from RM300 to RM9,000 from applicants in exchange for facilitating house renovation permit approvals across Perlis between 2022 and 2024. The duo allegedly received the bribes through bank transfers made to the male suspect's account, which was later believed to have been shared with the female suspect. Mohd Nor Adha said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. – Bernama

According to Shahrilnizam Mohamed, 54, based on the original kuih bakar recipe of his mother, he and his wife, Mahanum Abdul Rahman, 52, allowed themselves to reimagine the traditional cake with contemporary tastes. "We want to change the perception that kuih bakar is only meant to be sweet. It can also be savoury and come in a variety of flavours…The idea to create sardine-flavoured kuih bakar was inspired by both my wife and me, as we enjoy sardine dishes,' said Shahrilnizam when met by Bernama at his outlet in Larkin Sentral here recently. Shahrilnizam said this unique kuih bakar, which takes between 45 minutes and one hour to bake, is a hit with Singaporean customers, many of whom are willing to wait for long periods to take home their favourite flavours, particularly durian and sardine. During the holiday season, sales can reach up to 450 pieces a day, compared to an average of 200 on regular days, indicating how innovation can elevate this traditional Malaysian delicacy to unexpected heights. "Whenever we come here (Larkin Sentral), it's a definite purchase for our family. KUALA LUMPUR: The Paris Court of Appeal has reserved its decision until Dec 9 on Malaysia's bid to annul the US$14.9 billion (RM70 billion) final award in the arbitration case filed by individuals claiming to be heirs of the defunct Sulu Sultanate. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in a statement, said the court concluded its hearing on the merits for the annulment of the final award in the case. "During the hearing, the claimants attempted to postpone the proceedings to enable them to respond to the written opinion of the Public Prosecutor of France. "However, the court did not allow the motion for postponement and continued with the proceedings," she said. Azalina said Malaysia continues to place its confidence in the French judicial process and hopes the decision will bring a definitive end to what she described as illegal global enforcement attempts by the so-called Sulu claimants. The hearing comes after the French Court of Cassation on Nov 6 last year upheld a previous ruling that denied enforcement of the Partial Award, which had affirmed the arbitrator's jurisdiction in the case. Azalina said the government remains firmly committed to defending Malaysia's sovereignty, sovereign immunity, and national interests against all unlawful challenges. "Malaysia is also working to promote a global framework that places transparency at the centre of third-party litigation funding, to ensure such mechanisms are not misused as instruments of lawfare against sovereign states. "International arbitration must be protected from attempts to extort sovereign states under the guise of arbitration claims," she added. She said the government would continue to take all necessary measures to protect the integrity of international arbitration from exploitation.
