France voices concern over US strikes against Iranian facilities

France was neither involved in these strikes nor in their planning., according to a statement issued today by Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
''We urge the parties to exercise restraint in order to avoid any escalation that could lead to an extension of the conflict. In this context, our priority is to ensure the safety of our agents and nationals, as well as that of our interests and partners in the region,'' he said, affirming that France has repeatedly expressed its firm opposition to Iran gaining access to nuclear weapons.
''France is convinced that a lasting solution to this issue requires a negotiated solution within the framework of the Treaty of Non-Proliferation. We remain ready to contribute to this in conjunction with our partners,'' he added.
''France has taken due note of the statement by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which confirms at this stage that no high level of radiation has been detected,'' he said.

Radiation levels in Gulf remain normal, says UN nuclear watchdog

Radiation levels in the Gulf region remain normal after the 12-day Israel-Iran conflict severely damaged several nuclear facilities in Iran, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said. Grossi noted that any significant radioactive release would have been detected by the 48-nation International Radiation Monitoring System (IRMIS). He added that "Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the Tehran Research Reactor represented our main concern as any strike affecting those facilities – including their off-site power lines – could have caused a radiological accident with potential consequences in Iran as well as beyond its borders". "It did not happen, and the worst nuclear safety scenario was thereby avoided." Grossi reiterated that nuclear facilities should never be attacked, and emphasised the need for IAEA inspectors to continue their verification activities in Iran. He added that information from Iran's Nuclear Regulatory Authority show there is no increased off-site radiation levels in the nuclear sites.

Radiation levels in Gulf region remain normal: IAEA

Citing regional data reported regularly to the IAEA through the International Radiation Monitoring System (IRMIS), Director General Grossi noted that this 48-nation network would have detected an important radioactive release from any damaged nuclear power reactor. 'From a nuclear safety perspective, Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the Tehran Research Reactor represented our main concern as any strike affecting those facilities – including their off-site power lines – could have caused a radiological accident with potential consequences in Iran as well as beyond its borders in the case of the Bushehr plant. It did not happen, and the worst nuclear safety scenario was thereby avoided,' Director General Grossi said. Stressing again that nuclear facilities should never be attacked, he reiterated the IAEA's current assessment – based on information received from Iran's Nuclear Regulatory Authority – that this month's Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites would have caused localised radioactive releases inside the impacted facilities and localised toxic effects, but there has been no report of increased off-site radiation levels. The Director General also emphasised the need for IAEA inspectors to continue their verification activities in Iran, as required under its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (CSA) with the Agency.

Radiation levels in Gulf are normal after Israel-Iran conflict: UN nuclear watchdog

The UN nuclear watchdog announced that radiation levels in the Gulf region remain normal following the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran. Howevem, in a statement published on Thursday, the IAEA's Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi clarified that the air war between the two countries severely damaged several nuclear facilities in Iran. Many Iranian nuclear sites like Bushehr and Fordow were targeted in Israeli and US strikes during the conflict which ended with a surprise announcement of ceasefire by US President Donald Trump early on Tuesday. Grossi stated that a 48-nation network would have detected a major radioactive release from any damaged nuclear power reactor. He said regional data were reported regularly to the IAEA through the International Radiation Monitoring System (IRMIS). 'From a nuclear safety perspective, Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the Tehran Research Reactor represented our main concern as any strike affecting those facilities –including their off-site power lines– could have caused a radiological accident with potential consequences in Iran as well as beyond its borders in the case of the Bushehr plant," Gossi added. He said that this did not happen, and "the worst nuclear safety scenario was thereby avoided". He also stressed again that nuclear facilities should never be attacked, while pointing to the need for IAEA inspectors to continue their verification activities in Iran.
