Grab rolls out self-driving shuttle for staff in six-month Singapore pilot on July 9

Malay Mail11 hours ago
SINGAPORE, July 8 — Ride-hailing giant Grab is launching a six-month trial of a driverless shuttle service for its employees, starting July 9.
According to The Straits Times, the 22-seater autonomous electric minibus will run on a 3.9km fixed loop between Grab's office at Media Circle and the one-north MRT station during off-peak hours on weekdays.
Although the bus is fully self-driving, a safety operator will remain behind the wheel to take control if necessary, in line with Land Transport Authority (LTA) regulations.
The LTA, which oversees autonomous vehicle (AV) trials, requires all such vehicles to have a safety operator and display a blinking yellow beacon and a trial sticker when in autonomous mode.
Developed by Korean tech firm Autonomous A2Z, the vehicle is a regular electric minibus retrofitted with sensors and software to enable autonomous driving, The Straits Times reported.
It is equipped with 11 sensors — including radars and cameras — and has undergone over 100 hours of training along the designated route. The training covered road infrastructure, lane markings, pedestrian detection, and responding to traffic lights.
During a 15-minute demonstration today, the shuttle completed the journey without human intervention.
It navigated traffic, changed lanes to avoid obstacles like illegally parked vehicles, and stopped at every zebra crossing along the route — even when no pedestrians were present — as required by the LTA.
Grab's group managing director of operations, Yee Wee Tang, said the trial could offer insights into how AVs might serve short-distance trips more effectively.
'It could potentially be of value to passengers whose destinations are too far for walking but too near to use a ride-hail service,' he reportedly said at the media preview.
When not in service, the shuttle will be used for training and technology development.
Currently, five safety operators are undergoing training, with plans to expand to 10 by the end of 2025.
The pilot follows Grab's March partnership with four autonomous tech companies to assess how AVs can support urban transport in South-east Asia.
The launch also comes amid a wider government push to integrate autonomous vehicles into Singapore's public transport network.
In June, Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said the Singapore government was exploring the use of AVs to enhance public mobility. A larger-scale trial involving self-driving public shuttles is slated to begin in Punggol in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Autonomous A2Z is the only firm with LTA approval to conduct AV trials in 2025 so far, joining earlier test participants Chinese firms WeRide and Zelos, and local company Moovita.
According to the LTA, 17 autonomous vehicles are currently authorised for public road trials as of end-June. These include AVs designed for logistics, passenger transport, and road maintenance.
Since 2017, more than 60 AVs have been approved for on-road trials, with about a third still active.

ChemOne secures US$350m Islamic insurance cover for PEC

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore-based petrochemicals, green energy and natural resources conglomerate ChemOne Group announced that the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), has approved an insurance cover of US$350 million (RM1.4 billion) for Pengerang Energy Complex (PEC) in Johor. This cover is structured to support Islamic banks participating in PEC's project financing, underscoring the strong institutional confidence in PEC and its long term strategic value to the region. 'ICIEC's support is a powerful validation of PEC's financial strength and far-reaching development impact. PEC will drive regional industrial growth, create thousands of jobs, and support regional value chains, all while adhering to global standards for sustainable and responsible financing. We are honoured to lead one of Asia's most impactful private-sector led financings,' said ChemOne chief financial officer Mayank Vishnoi. The ICIEC cover is structured under a Murabaha financing facility, providing 90% cover on both principle and profit—significantly de-risking the transaction for participating Islamic banks including National Bank of Kuwait, Qatar National Bank, Al Rajhi Bank Malaysia and Al Rajhi Bank KSA. Al Rajhi Bank KSA plays the role of lead Islamic bank and a coordinator to ICIEC as well as investment agent for the Islamic financing tranche. In addition, the IsDB Group—through IsDB and the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD)—has reinforced its commitment through a direct investment of US$150 million via Istisna-Ijara structures. The IsDB Group's total support for PEC—combining direct investments and credit enhancement—now stands at over US$500 million, marking one of the group's most substantial engagements in Southeast Asia. ICIEC is backed by AA- and Aa3 credit ratings from S&P and Moody's respectively, highlighting its strong financial fundamentals and key multilateral mandate to promote investment within member states. The PEC is envisioned as one of Southeast Asia's most advanced and sustainable energy and petrochemical facilities. Upon completion, the project will significantly boost regional supply capabilities in aromatics, clean fuels, and related products, all while adhering to international environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. The strong support from multilateral institutions reflects PEC's strategic role in supporting energy resilience and sustainability. The project is also aligned with Malaysia's ambitions to enhance downstream capabilities and increase the value-add in its hydrocarbon sector. Located in Johor's Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) in Johor, PEC is set to be one of the world's largest and most competitive integrated condensate splitter and aromatics facilities. It will utilise UOP Honeywell's latest LD Parex technology to maximise energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance feedstock flexibility, allowing the PEC plant to become one of the most advanced energy and carbon facilities in its class. During construction, PEC will create approximately 7,000 jobs, with 300 operational roles post completion of which 80% of which will be filled by Malaysians. Local SMEs are expected to benefit from US$1.2 billion in contracts in the areas of fabrication, erection, civil work, and bulk supplies. With a projected annual export turnover of US$5 billion, PEC is poised to position PIPC as a regional oil and gas hub and propel Malaysia's position in the regional oil and gas value chain.

Bursa Malaysia falls for second day amid trade tariff concerns, market breadth remains negative

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Bursa Malaysia ended lower for a second straight session on Tuesday, bucking the regional uptrend, as investor sentiment remained cautious amid renewed concerns over US tariffs, analysts said. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) shed 7.40 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 1,530.14 from Monday's close of 1,537.54. The benchmark index opened 7.85 points lower at 1,529.69 and moved between 1,526.27 and 1,531.14 throughout the day. Market breadth was negative, with 550 decliners outpacing 399 gainers. A total of 490 counters were unchanged, while 966 were untraded and nine suspended. Turnover narrowed to 3.06 billion shares worth RM2.20 billion, compared with 3.57 billion shares worth RM2.49 billion on Monday. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the FBM KLCI extended its losses amid heightened volatility in regional trade policy, with selling pressure particularly evident in banking and consumer-linked sectors. 'The domestic equity market remained under pressure following confirmation that Malaysian exports will face a 25 per cent tariff under the United States' latest trade action, one percentage point higher than initially signalled during the 'Liberation Day' announcement. 'While the local benchmark declined, regional markets charted a different course, with most major indices in Asia trading higher on cautious optimism that the US may still be open to negotiation,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the tariff situation may not be as severe as perceived and suggested the recent selling could present a bargain-hunting opportunity, with valuations turning more attractive. 'Although the tariffs pose challenges, the impact on Malaysia is cushioned by the fact that regional competitors are also affected, in some cases more significantly. 'As such, we expect the benchmark index to trend within the 1,520–1,550 range for the rest of the week,' he said.
