'So many fights I don't remember' - UFC's most active fighter

BBC News30-05-2025
UFC veteran Kevin Holland is once again preparing to return to the octagon as he faces Vicente Luque on 7 June.Fighting out of Texas, Holland is known for his short turnarounds and his fight in New Jersey is no different.Luque will be Holland's 21st fight for the UFC since 2020, making him the company's most active competitor during this period.Having made his UFC debut in 2018 - a decision loss against Thiago Santos - Holland catapulted to fame in 2020 because of his activity.Despite limited events because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Holland managed five fights throughout 2020 - winning all five and equalling the record for most UFC wins in a calendar year. For some fighters, five bouts in a year simply isn't possible - but for 'The Trailblazer', this is nothing new."My whole career I've always been pretty active. You're an athlete, you can't be an athlete for 40 years, you can only be it for so long. So take advantage and wish for the best," he told BBC Sport.Holland's next fight will be his 41st professional bout in 10 years - on three occasions he has competed five or more times in a single year. "Between super matches in jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, MMA, I'd fight seven to eight times a year. I've always fought a lot, never really sit on my butt too much," he added."I've had so many fights I don't remember none of them."
'I don't really need much time between fights'
Luque will be Holland's third UFC fight of 2025, most recently defeating Icelandic legend Gunnar Nelson in March. Before that, Holland suffered a disappointing first-round loss to Reinier de Ridder in January - just three months after he was pulled from a fight after suffering from a broken rib."I fought against De Ridder probably a little faster then I should've done. At the end of the day, you only learn from being in there. Experience is the best teacher and I tend to get quite a bit of experience," he said."As soon as I was healthy to go it's straight back in the gym. It's simple, I like to stay in there and stay active."I don't really need much time in between fights, two days is typically all a man needs."
His constant fighting isn't the only reason for fame inside the UFC - his antics inside the cage have also won him a number of fans.Notorious for speaking to his opponents while fighting, Holland most famously asked UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov for "wrestling advice" during an encounter with Derek Brunson in 2021.But as he sits loading up his gaming console while sat in his Texas home, Holland admitted his history of talking inside the cage isn't just for entertainment purposes."My brain goes a lot of places. You ever heard of ADHD and stuff like that? It's not that fighting is boring, it's a fun sport, but there's a lot of things going through my brain at one time," he said."I'm talking to you, I'm still loading up on the game, I'm always doing 300 things at one time. I'm not good at focusing on one thing for too long."
With Luque ranked 14th in the welterweight division, a win for Holland would likely bring him back into the top 15 of the rankings.Having gone through a tough run of form, this could come as a huge boost for Holland's future inside the company. But when asked for advice, Holland admitted he doesn't look too far into the future."I'm just focused on one thing only, and that's the fight coming up," he said."Treat MMA like a real job. Respect and appreciate it, listen to your coaches, and put the grind in. "Don't listen to the critics, listen to the coaches."

Tigers' Troy Melton dominates Diamondbacks, earns first career win

July 29 - Troy Melton tossed seven shutout innings to collect his first career victory as the host Detroit Tigers downed the slumping Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-1, on Monday night. Melton (1-1) scattered five singles and didn't issue a walk while striking out five in his second career start after being promoted from Triple-A Toledo. Dillon Dingler led the offense for the Tigers with three hits, including a solo homer, and two runs scored. Andy Ibanez, recalled from Toledo earlier in the day, supplied a double and a solo homer and also scored twice. Matt Vierling added an RBI double as the Tigers won their second straight following a six-game losing streak. Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7) gave up five runs and eight hits while striking out five in six innings. Alek Thomas hit a solo homer for Arizona, which has lost six of its last seven contests. Arizona third baseman Eugenio Suarez, one of the prominent names on the trade market, was removed after being hit in the hand by a Will Vest pitch in the ninth. Suarez is among the top five in the league in homers with 36. The Tigers scored a gift run in the first. Gleyber Torres drew a one-out walk and Jahmai Jones hit into a fielder's choice. Spencer Torkelson then hit a short fly ball. A trio of Diamondbacks converged but left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. couldn't hang onto it. Jones came around to score on the play. Ibanez led off the second inning with a double and moved to third on a Dillon single. One out later, Javier Baez had a bloop single to center as Ibanez scored. Detroit extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Ibanez led off and ambushed a Rodriguez fastball over the left field wall. Dingler followed with a single and moved up on a grounder. With two out, Vierling doubled to center to bring home Dingler. Rodriguez recorded four straight strikeouts before Dingler pulled a hanging Rodriguez slider to make it 5-0. The Diamondbacks got on the board when Thomas blasted a Tommy Kahnle changeup over the right-center field wall with one out in the eighth. --Field Level Media

Republicans propose bill to rename the Kennedy Center to the Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts

Republican Representative Bob Onder has proposed a bill to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., after President Donald Trump. The proposed legislation, titled the 'Make Entertainment Great Again Act,' cites President Trump as a significant cultural icon and patron of the arts. This bill follows a separate amendment, introduced by Republican Representative Mike Simpson, to rename the Kennedy Center's Opera House after First Lady Melania Trump, which passed the House Appropriations Committee 33-25. President Trump recently replaced members of the Kennedy Center's board and became its chairman, stating his intention to ensure the institution was 'not going to be woke.' John F. Kennedy's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, has criticized these renaming efforts, suggesting President Trump is 'obsessed with being bigger than JFK.'

Julia Roberts' nepo baby niece Emma compares offseason in the Hamptons to Stephen King's The Shining

has compared offseason in the Hamptons to Stephen King's classic horror novel The Shining. The 34-year-old Scream Queens alumna — whose secret hobby was recently revealed — opened up about the years she has spent at the popular seaside town for her latest cover story for Modern Luxury. The star has often been spotted in the Hamptons, whether that be at a star-studded event or enjoying lowkey outings. Emma — who is the niece of Julia Roberts — recalled 'coming out here all the time' to visit her mom Kelly Cunningham who now lives in the Hamptons full time. 'Fifteen years ago, in the winter, it was like The Shining sometimes out here,' the actress told the outlet. 'And now it's like summer all year, which is so beautiful to see . . . I've fallen more and more in love with it as the years have gone on — especially after having my son. I see the Hamptons in a whole different light through his eyes, which is so magical.' During her summers in the Hamptons, Emma brings along a few good books to read while accompanied by her son Rhodes. She shares the four-year-old with ex, the actor Garrett Hedlund, whom she dated from 2019 until their split in 2022. Roberts is now engaged to the actor Cody John. 'I love Sagg Main Beach. It's kind of my routine in the summer — I'll take my son to camp and bring my book with me to the beach and just sit by myself for an hour,' she said. 'There's nothing like it.' Roberts sounded enthused about the people and 'community' in the Hamptons during her conversation. 'It just feels more like a community way of life out here — which, to me, is always more inspiring. It makes me want to read more, makes me want to cook more,' she admitted. Emma has been an avid reader for many years, and even launched her own book club Belletrist in 2017 with her pal Karah Preiss. Earlier this month, she made an appearance at the Avaline x Stella McCartney gathering in East Hampton. The mom-of-one dressed for the occasion in a white halter-styled minidress, as well as a pair of white shoes with chunky soles. Her reddish locks were parted in the middle, and effortlessly flowed down past her shoulders in light waves. And last month in June, Emma put on a stylish display in Montauk, which borders the Hamptons. She donned a black, sleeveless dress with a fashionable belt around the waistline while stopping by the Michael Kors x Montauk Yacht Club event. Aside from enjoying the summer weather in the Hamptons, the beauty has a number of projects up her sleeve, including the upcoming romantic comedy Marriage Material which is also starring comedian Matt Rife, per Variety. The movie is produced by BuzzFeed Studios, and the studio president Richard Alan Reid stated back in May: 'Marriage Material is a fresh, fiercely funny romantic comedy with an undeniable heart. 'Emma and Matt are a comedy duo that audiences worldwide will enjoy,' Reid continued. 'We're delighted to be partnered with Capstone Studios, and believe that with its bold humor, irresistible charm, and modern twist on love, Marriage Material is poised to become a global crowd-pleaser.' Last year, she also appeared in the 12th season of American Horror Story alongside Kim Kardashian. 'Getting to work with Kim was so much fun because we passed each other growing up in Calabasas together,' Emma told Modern Luxury. The pair are now working on the upcoming Netflix series titled Calabasas, which the two stars are executive producers on, per Deadline. 'That led us to another project we have in development, a TV show called Calabasas, based on the memoir If You Lived Here You'd Be Famous by Now,' Roberts said. 'We're turning that into a show with Netflix, so that will be really fun.' In an interview with Elle from February, Emma discussed the importance of having balancing when it comes to working in the entertainment industry. 'I think it's really important to have a life outside of work — to read things and have experiences that aren't work related. I think this actually makes the work better when you pick it back up again.' The star added, 'I really try to give my personal life as much love as my work life. 'As someone in the industry, I think it's easy to self-isolate for the sake of a job, but losing touch with the real world is where you get yourself in trouble,' she said. And while enjoying being a mom to son Rhodes — who turns five in December — Emma also talked about her self-care. 'Self-care for me is about unplugging from electronics,' she said. 'I love to do bath and bed routines with my son and then take some time for myself. That usually involves a face mask and a book.'
