'Attacked With Chilli Powder And Machete': Tamil Nadu Techie Killed By Girlfriend's Brother

A 27-year-old techie was allegedly murdered by the brother of a woman he was in a relationship with, in a suspected caste-based crime in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district, police said on Monday.
The main accused, 24-year-old Surjit, has been detained, said officials, adding that further investigation into the matter is underway.
The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, had reportedly gone to a Siddha clinic in Tirunelveli town on Sunday evening to meet his former schoolmate and suspected girlfriend, S Subhashini, regarding treatment for his ailing grandfather. Subhashini is a practitioner at the clinic.
According to police, an argument broke out between Ganesh and Surjit, Subhashini's brother, outside the clinic.
Surjit allegedly attacked Ganesh with a sickle. His body was later recovered about 200 metres from the clinic.
The post-mortem was conducted at the Tirunelveli government hospital.
Subhashini's family is from the Maravar community, a dominant caste group in southern Tamil Nadu, while Ganesh belonged to the Devendra Kula Vellalar, a Dalit sub-caste. Police said the woman's family had objected to their relationship.

'My son is an innocent person. The woman asked him to come to the hospital. The accused took my son out, threw chilli powder on his face, and attacked him with a machete… The government should immediately expel his mother and father from service. We will not receive my son's body unless action is taken," said the victim's father, Chandrashekar.
A police officer confirmed that Surjit and his parents have been booked under relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
'The prime accused has been arrested. Further investigations are underway," the officer said.

The Bombay High Court has granted bail to a 60-year-old tuition teacher who was convicted earlier this year by a POCSO court for sexually assaulting a minor Sarang V Kotwal suggested that the victim might have been tutored as she had admitted in her cross-examination that her mother, a police constable, had told her how to respond to questions in the trial alleged incident happened on March 15, 2017, when the victim, then studying in Class 4, was attending tuition classes along with her elder sibling. A complaint was lodged by the girl's mother on March 19 that year. The girl claimed that the teacher called her to his room, asked her to read a book, and touched her breasts inappropriately. 63-year-old woman dies, as water tanker hits their two-wheeler in Andheri
MUMBAI: A 63-year-old pillion rider died after a water tanker hit her scooter from behind in Andheri East on Friday. The accused driver fled without providing medical assistance, alleged the complainant. The unidentified driver has been booked under sections 106 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and rash and negligent driving under section 271, 125 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The deceased, Maghiben Patel, is a resident of Vile Parle. The complainant in the case is Ramji Ambaji Patel, 62, Maghiben's husband. According to the complaint, around 6.30am, her husband and she were returning from the Tapeshwar temple at Aarey Colony Shankar Mandir on his Honda Activa scooter on the day of the accident. He said they had reached the Pipeline Road under the Vijay Nagar Bridge at 7am and were taking the service road when a water-filled tanker approached them from behind and crashed into the scooter. Both Ramji and Maghiben fell on the road, and she came under the rear wheel of the tanker. Her legs were crushed, causing severe bleeding. Before Ramji could recompose, the accused driver had fled without providing them with any medical assistance. Ramji alerted the police, who then rushed the couple to the Cooper Hospital in Juhu in a private ambulance. Maghiben was declared dead during treatment. He filed a complaint with the MIDC police on Friday. 'We are tracing the driver of the tanker through the CCTV footage in the area,' said a police officer. 22-year-old student found dead on IIT Bombay campus
MUMBAI: A 22-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead at the Powai campus in the early hours on Saturday. He is suspected to have fallen from the terrace of a hostel building, from the tenth floor. Police said the cause of death is not clear and investigations are still underway. 'The incident was reported at 2.30am by the hostel authorities,' said deputy commissioner of police (zone 10) Datta Nalawade. Powai police said the deceased and a few other students had ordered dinner and took it up to the terrace of a hostel building on Friday night. After they had dinner, all of them left, except for the deceased. At around 1.00am, his colleagues found his body at the base of the building. He appears to have fallen from the terrace, police said, adding that his colleagues took him to a nearby hospital but he was declared dead on admission. Police are recording the statements of the hostel mates of the deceased and the teaching staff, to assess his state of mind. They say preliminary investigations have found no evidence of foul play. No suicide note has been found but police are investigating the case as a possible suicide or accidental death. The body has been sent to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar East for post-mortem examination. IIT-B has posted a message on social media, saying: 'The untimely death has shocked us to the core and we share the grief. It is very unfortunate that a promising career came to a premature end in such a manner. His death has saddened the entire community on IIT campus. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.'
