Ian Wright names 'major favourite' for 2027 Women's World Cup after England win

Metro27-07-2025
Ian Wright picked out the USA as the biggest threat to England's hopes of winning the next World Cup after the Lionesses successfully defended their European Championship crown on Sunday evening.
Sarina Wiegman's side were once again forced to come from behind after Mariona Caldentey broke the deadlock for Spain, the world champions, in the 25th minute of Sunday's nerve-shredding final in Basel.
Just as they had done against Sweden and Italy previously, the Lionesses dug deep and found an equaliser, with Alessia Russo heading home Chloe Kelly's pinpoint cross to make it all square just before the hour-mark.
The two teams could not be separated after extra-time and it was England who eventually prevailed after another dramatic shootout, with the contest ending 3-1 in favour of the holders.
The Lionesses' latest triumph represents the first time in history that an English team have won a major tournament on foreign soil, three years on from the side's famous victory over Germany at Wembley.
'No, I can't believe it!' an emotional Wiegman told BBC Sport in the immediate aftermath of England's victory.
'We said we can win by any means and that's what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible.'
Asked if she was shocked to win the trophy for a second time on the trot, Wiegman replied: 'Yes, yes.
'I just can't believe it. I have a medal around my neck and we have a trophy.
'It has been the most chaotic tournament on the pitch – all the challenges we had on the pitch against our opponent.
'From the first game it was chaos.Losing your first game and becoming European Champions is incredible. Football is chaos.'
USA head coach Emma Hayes, who was on punditry duty for ITV, said she had greatly enjoyed watching England up close across the tournament and how they were being managed by Wiegman.
And while the ex-Chelsea boss admitted she was looking forward to the 2027 World Cup, she was keen to stress that the USA's qualification was not a foregone conclusion.
'I'm an international manager and I get the opportunity to learn from two of the best teams in the world, not just in terms of how they play but also how they're being managed in all the things that come with tournament football,' Hayes said.
'I was English for 120 minutes, but these two to the right of me [Wright and Karen Carney] have abandoned me now that we're talking about 2027.
'Listen, I cannot wait for it but as we know, we have to qualify for these tournaments and the USA haven't qualified yet.'
In response, legendary ex-England and Arsenal striker Wright insisted Hayes' USA side were the overwhelming favourites to lift the trophy in two years' time.
'They're the favourites, they're the ones to beat. They're so good, they're so good!' Wright said.
'If we get anywhere near them I'd be really happy because they're the ones, they're major favourites.'
Despite their painful defeat, Wright is confident Spain will bounce back and be a 'problem' for opposition teams in 2027.
'You can't ignore France either, they seem to be really close,' Wright added.
'I don't know what's missing from them, but there's something missing from them.
'Spain as well, if you look from the forwards point of view, if they can get that centre-forward, because that's what they were missing today.
'If they can get that centre-forward to finish it off then Spain will be a problem.
'They need to do that in the next two years, they need to find that. It might be enough time, it might not. But if they do find that forward then Spain will be a problem.'
Former England winger Karen Carney, meanwhile, feels Italy could be a dark horse for the World Cup after their 'exceptional' run to the semi-finals in Switzerland this summer. More Trending
Asked if Italy could be in with a shot of the title, Carney replied: 'Yeah, I think they were exceptional.
'They're just developing, probably, a little too soon for them for this tournament.
'Every time there's a European Championship, there's a beacon and everyone is investing and getting better and stronger and every tournament we say that it's the most competitive.
That's the levels. It keeps growing and growing and that's the way is should be. 2027 will be exceptional.' Are the USA the team to beat ahead of the World Cup?

Rio Ferdinand thinks Luke Shaw's brutal claim shows state of Man Utd under Ruben Amorim

After Luke Shaw's eyebrow-raising comments about the state of Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, Rio Ferdinand has offered his honest thoughts Rio Ferdinand believes Luke Shaw's claim about Manchester United shedding the "stragglers" in the squad highlights Ruben Amorim's positive effect. Amorim, 40, has taken a no-nonsense approach to United's squad this summer. ‌ One of his first acts was to banish the so-called 'Bomb Squad' featuring Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford. The latter has been loaned to Barcelona, but the other trio were left out of United's pre-season tour in the USA and told they will be training separately from the rest of the squad. ‌ Last season, Sancho, Antony and Rashford were loaned to Chelsea, Real Betis and Aston Villa, respectively, while Garnacho was told to find a new club after he publicly criticised Amorim shortly after United's loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final. ‌ New recruits Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have now been brought in, and Shaw recently praised Amorim's tough love approach that has managed to rid the club of "stragglers" holding the group back. Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents show, the ex-United captain reacted to Shaw's comments. He said: "It was quite a damning statement, wasn't it? "When I heard that, I was like, 'I wonder what the next meet-up is going to be like if he sees any of those guys.' I think I'd have had something to say about that if I thought it was about me. "Then you go, 'Maybe they don't say anything, because they might think and know it is true.' But there's a confidence in there with him that goes, 'You know what? They know that I know what went wrong. So I can say this with my chest.' "That's what it feels like. Also, the environment he is feeling now would have to be a positive one for him to come out and speak like that." ‌ When asked specifically about Shaw's place at Old Trafford and whether he was referencing the aforementioned quartet, Ferdinand added: "His statue within the squad, I noticed it while I was on tour. He has a very strong stature within the squad. He's been there, I think, over 10 years now. "He has seen it all there. All the bad times, he's seen it. He is one of the most experienced and most Manchester United players within that squad. So, I don't think he has any qualms coming out like that. "I think you have to have seen enough to be able to go and talk like that. So I think it's a strong statement. I don't think there's any two that he's directed at those four players, because they are the ones sitting on the outside." ‌ Last season was a chastening one for the Red Devils. They finished 15th and only mustered 42 points and 44 goals. Their last chance of redemption in the Europa League final also ended with them losing to Tottenham in a lacklustre fashion. But the signs are looking positive for the Red Devils, as they won the Premier League Summer Series in the USA. They beat West Ham United 2-1 and Bournemouth 4-1, before drawing 2-2 with Everton. Of course, the real measure will be how they start the Premier League campaign. Their opening fixtures are ominous, as they host Arsenal, Burnley and Chelsea, while also travelling to Fulham, Manchester City and Brentford in their first six matches.

Former Arsenal player Thomas Partey granted conditional bail

Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing in court on rape and sexual assault charges. The Ghanaian midfielder, 32, has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. The footballer, who gave his address as Potters Bar, showed no reaction as the charges were read out and was not asked to enter any pleas. The alleged offences include incidents of anal rape, the court heard. His bail conditions include that he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel. It comes amid reports that Partey is set to join Spanish club Villarreal. As bail conditions were discussed in court, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring said: 'I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now.' Partey is due to appear at the Old Bailey on September 2. He was charged four days after leaving Arsenal when his contract expired at the end of June. A spokeswoman for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence said they were 'profoundly disappointed' in the north London club for their handling of the matter. Speaking outside court, Honor Barber told the PA news agency: 'We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love and the club that has values that we believe in was playing, week-in week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence. 'We protested outside almost every home game last season because we wanted to disrupt the wall of silence that the club has put up around this issue, and we did that because we want to support our club and feel happy and comfortable supporting our club.' Members of the group held a banner which read 'Arsenal said: 'We do the right thing' then did nothing'. Ms Barber said the group wanted Arsenal to publish their sexual violence policies, 'suspend anyone under investigation for sexual offences' and 'properly support the survivors'. The Metropolitan Police said it first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he 'denies all the charges against him', adding he welcomed 'the opportunity to finally clear his name'. He joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer worth around £45 million. The defensive midfielder signed for the Spanish club in 2012 and made 188 appearances, as well as going out on loan to Mallorca and Leganes. He played 35 games for the north London club in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals. Partey has also made more than 50 appearances for Ghana including at the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. An Arsenal spokesperson previously said: 'The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.'

Third Premier League club joins race for Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling's future lies away from Chelsea and there is no shortage of interest in him, with three Premier League clubs in the race for his signature. The 30-year-old was axed from the first team at Stamford Bridge a year ago, informed that he was no longer in contention to play under manager Enzo Maresca. The England international secured an ideal move across London to join Arsenal, but that season-long deal did not work out brilliantly. Sterling made little impact with the Gunners, scoring just one goal in the Carabao Cup, and there was no interest from the north London club in making the move permanent. Now back at Chelsea but not training with the first team, the Blues are very keen to get rid of him and the winger wants to find somewhere to play. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. TalkSPORT report that three Premier League clubs hold an interest in the former Liverpool and Manchester City star, with West Ham joining Crystal Palace and Fulham in considering a move. With Sterling reportedly keen to stay in London, he appears very likely to get his wish, although any deal is made somewhat complicated by the player's huge wages. The 82-cap England international reportedly earns £325,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge, an amount which will not be covered by any of the interested Premier League clubs. Juventus have also been credited with an interest in Sterling, but staying in the Premier League remains the most likely outcome. The likes of Ben Chilwell and Axel Disasi are in the same situation as Sterling at Chelsea, banished from first team activities and are hoping to secure moves away as soon as possible.
