Rio Ferdinand thinks Luke Shaw's brutal claim shows state of Man Utd under Ruben Amorim
Rio Ferdinand believes Luke Shaw's claim about Manchester United shedding the "stragglers" in the squad highlights Ruben Amorim's positive effect. Amorim, 40, has taken a no-nonsense approach to United's squad this summer.
One of his first acts was to banish the so-called 'Bomb Squad' featuring Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford. The latter has been loaned to Barcelona, but the other trio were left out of United's pre-season tour in the USA and told they will be training separately from the rest of the squad.
Last season, Sancho, Antony and Rashford were loaned to Chelsea, Real Betis and Aston Villa, respectively, while Garnacho was told to find a new club after he publicly criticised Amorim shortly after United's loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
New recruits Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have now been brought in, and Shaw recently praised Amorim's tough love approach that has managed to rid the club of "stragglers" holding the group back.
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents show, the ex-United captain reacted to Shaw's comments. He said: "It was quite a damning statement, wasn't it?
"When I heard that, I was like, 'I wonder what the next meet-up is going to be like if he sees any of those guys.' I think I'd have had something to say about that if I thought it was about me.
"Then you go, 'Maybe they don't say anything, because they might think and know it is true.' But there's a confidence in there with him that goes, 'You know what? They know that I know what went wrong. So I can say this with my chest.'
"That's what it feels like. Also, the environment he is feeling now would have to be a positive one for him to come out and speak like that."
When asked specifically about Shaw's place at Old Trafford and whether he was referencing the aforementioned quartet, Ferdinand added: "His statue within the squad, I noticed it while I was on tour. He has a very strong stature within the squad. He's been there, I think, over 10 years now.
"He has seen it all there. All the bad times, he's seen it. He is one of the most experienced and most Manchester United players within that squad. So, I don't think he has any qualms coming out like that.
"I think you have to have seen enough to be able to go and talk like that. So I think it's a strong statement. I don't think there's any two that he's directed at those four players, because they are the ones sitting on the outside."
Last season was a chastening one for the Red Devils. They finished 15th and only mustered 42 points and 44 goals. Their last chance of redemption in the Europa League final also ended with them losing to Tottenham in a lacklustre fashion.
But the signs are looking positive for the Red Devils, as they won the Premier League Summer Series in the USA. They beat West Ham United 2-1 and Bournemouth 4-1, before drawing 2-2 with Everton.
Of course, the real measure will be how they start the Premier League campaign. Their opening fixtures are ominous, as they host Arsenal, Burnley and Chelsea, while also travelling to Fulham, Manchester City and Brentford in their first six matches.

Man United 'increasingly confident of beating Newcastle to the signing of Benjamin Sesko and believe the RB Leipzig striker only wants Old Trafford move'
Manchester United are increasingly confident of beating Newcastle to the signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and believe the 22-year-old 'only want to join' the club, a report has claimed. The Red Devils finally made their interest in the Slovenian striker concrete on Tuesday, with a £73.8million bid, slightly less than the improved offer worth a total of £78.2m that rivals Newcastle tabled on Monday night. While the Magpies remain in the hunt for the forward as they look to secure a replacement for their wantaway star Alexander Isak, there is a feeling that United would not have made an official approach if they had not received encouragement from the player's camp. According to Fabrizio Romano, United's confidence in completing a deal has only grown 'stronger' following the submission of their bid and the club are of the belief that Sesko only has eyes for Old Trafford. Furthermore, he claims that the club have forwarded an official contract proposal to the player while they 'keep negotiating' with Leipzig. The Bundesliga outfit have yet to respond to United's bid, but Sesko will make the final decision over his future and is now considering his options with the club and his representatives. United remained in the background while Newcastle made two attempts to strike a deal for the 22-year-old before officially entering the bidding on Tuesday, although sources are remaining tight-lipped over the move. They hope that Sesko's preference to move to Old Trafford will tip the balance in their favour even though the current offer appears to be marginally smaller. United chiefs believe their price matches the player's market value. On Tuesday, bookmakers Betfair suspended all bets for the Slovenian to move to Manchester United or Newcastle. Sam Rosbottom, a spokesperson from the bookies, has said: 'Having been odds-on 8/15 favourites to sign Benjamin Sesko on Monday, betting is now suspended for Man United to seal a deal for the 22-year-old Slovenian. 'United have already secured deals for Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to boost their attacking ranks this summer. With his future looking unlikely, Rasmus Hojlund is 3/10 to join RB Leipzig, heading in the opposite direction to Sesko.' United have been keen to sign a centre-forward this summer after seeing No.1 target Liam Delap opt for Chelsea, and Hugo Ekitike and Viktor Gyokeres go to Liverpool and Arsenal. They have already spent more than £130m on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to support a new centre-forward, with Rasmus Hojlund set to leave if a new signing comes in. Newcastle, meanwhile, want Sesko to replace Isak who is intent on joining Liverpool. The Merseysiders have already had a £110m bid for Isak rejected and are unlikely to return with a better offer until Newcastle have a new striker in place. Mail Sport previously reported that Sesko became United's No 1 choice should they sign a new striker this summer, ahead of Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins. Leipzig have an informal agreement in place to allow Sesko to go should they receive a suitable package from the right club, and talks were held with the Slovenian and his agent Elvis Basanovic over the weekend to discuss his next steps.

Wrexham AFC Unveils New Third Kit Honouring Welsh Heritage in Patagonia
Wrexham AFC has unveiled a 2025/26 third kit which pays tribute to the Welsh community in Patagonia on the 160th anniversary of the first settlers' arrival. Inspired by the flag of Y Wladfa, the Welsh settlement in Argentina, the new design aims to celebrate the cultural ties between Wales and Patagonia, which is home to the largest Welsh-speaking community outside of Wales. The kit launch is accompanied by a new short film from Wrexham AFC and United, featuring two choirs — one perched on a cliff in Wales, the other in Patagonia — singing Yma o Hyd. The collaboration draws inspiration from United's REUNITED documentary, featured in Welcome to Wrexham Season 3. The film followed Patagonians with Welsh heritage as they travelled to Wrexham for the first time. 'This new third kit is a powerful tribute to our shared heritage with the Welsh community in Patagonia,' said Wrexham AFC CEO Michael Williamson. 'Through its celebration of Y Wladfa, it honours a 160-year bond rooted in resilience, identity, and pride – all values that continue to shape Wrexham AFC today. As we look to the future, we remain deeply connected to our past.' Based on the colours of the Patagonia flag, the new shirt features dragon outlines within the blue Argentinian stripes, a Welsh dragon on the nape and the words 'Don't forget where you came from' on an internal tape around the hem. The collar of the shirt is a white crew neck edged in red, as are the sleeve cuffs. The front features the Macron Hero and Wrexham AFC crest, both applied in heat-transferred silicone, and the United logo across the middle. Sleeve sponsors HP and back-of-shirt sponsors Meta Quest are also featured. The third kit is completed by white shorts with light blue stripes along the thigh edges and red details, and by socks featuring horizontal light blue and white bands, finished with a white top edge and a central red horizontal stripe. 'The kit, conceived as a tribute to Y Wladfa, completes a Game Set for Wrexham AFC that we are truly proud of and that we hope will inspire the team to many achievements in the upcoming season,' said Macron CEO Gianluca Pavanello. 'At Macron, what really sets us apart in designing kits for our partner clubs is the freedom to start from a completely blank canvas. With the home, away and third kits for 2025/26 season, we feel we have truly captured the spirit and identity of the club, blending tradition with innovation, all while keeping quality at the heart of everything we do.' 'We're excited to see the emotion of Reunited live on in this new kit and short film,' said United Airlines Chief Advertising Officer Maggie Schmerin. 'Connecting people is at the heart of what we do and the symbolism of the Y Wladfa flag on the kit and the two choirs in the film is a beautiful way to honour the deep ties between Wales and Patagonia.'
