Patrick Kane re-signs with Detroit Red Wings for one year, $3 million
Patrick Kane is back for a third consecutive season with the Detroit Red Wings.
The future first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famer agreed to terms on a one-year contract carrying a $3 million cap hit.
The deal was sealed in the evening on Monday, June 30, but had been a widely expected move for months: Kane said two days after the season ended he enjoyed his time in Detroit – which dates back a year and a half – and general manager Steve Yzerman expressed interest in extending the relationship at his end-of-season news conference.

Besides not having to uproot his family – as Kane put it, how could he take his son, four-year-old Patrick, away from Archie DeBrincat, son of teammate and good friend Alex DeBrincat? – it also shows Kane's belief in the Wings, even as their playoff drought hit nine years this spring.

"I'm still optimistic about the group and I think we're closer than we were at the end of last year," Kane said in mid-April, shortly after the season ended. "It's such a fine line. We were on a pretty good pace from when Todd [McLellan] came in.
"I think that will huge going into next season, the confidence in the coaching staff."

Kane, 36, joined the Wings in November of 2023, six months after undergoing invasive hip surgery. For him, it was an opportunity to see if he could still play at a high level; for the Wings, an opportunity to add a three-time Stanley Cup champion with ethereal skills.
He proved that even past his prime, he was still "Showtime," the moniker bestowed upon him over the years for his electrifying play. Though he appeared in just 50 games in 2023-24, he still hit the 20-goal mark, and had 47 points in 2023-24.
Kane re-upped with the Wings on the eve of free agency for one year at $4 million last offseason. He looked slow out of the gate last fall, with just five goals his first 29 games, but the Wings as a whole were an uninspiring team in the first half.
Then Todd McLellan was named coach during the Christmas break, and soon Kane was back to being "Showtime," finishing with 21 goals and 59 points in 72 games.

Further proving that in his case, age is just a number: It was Kane who led the team in scoring post-4 Nations break, with 28 points the final 27 games.

Why Did MN Wild Trade for Vladimir Tarasenko and What Should Fans Expect?
Minnesota Wild fans have been waiting a long time for July 1, 2025. For years, tomorrow is supposed to be the day everything changes regarding the future of this organization. Earlier in his career, Tarasenko was one of the top scoring wings in the National Hockey League. He's scored over 30 goals six times during his 13-year NHL career, including 116 goals and 106 assists in three seasons with the St. Louis Blues between 2014 and 2016. Advertisement But in recent seasons, Tarasenko has been a shell of the superstar he was a decade ago. He hasn't scored 30 goals since 2021-22 and last season, Vlad's only in Detroit, he took a huge step back. In 80 games with the Red Wings, Tarasenko scored just 11 goals and 22 assists, spending a large chunk of his 18:51 TOI on the third line. His 33 points in Detroit last year was the Russian winger's lowest total of any season where he played 20 games or more. Why did the Wild trade for Tarasenko? So… why did the Minnesota Wild make the deal for Vladimir Tarasenko? A couple of reasons. First off, Detroit was looking to dump the salary of an incredibly talented player, for essentially nothing in return. Meanwhile, other free agent options would have required more money and more term. We knew the Wild wanted to add a scoring winger to their arsenal; we figured that would come via free agency. But players such as Brock Boeser, Nikolaj Ehlers and Mikael Granlund would have taken more term and probably dollars than the Wild wanted to invest. Guerin hopes that will reinvigorate the 33-year-old's career, and in turn, give Minnesota the high-caliber scoring forward they so desperately desire. Advertisement The plan now, per Russo, is for the Minnesota Wild to sit back on the cap space that will remain, after Kaprizov gets his extension, and wait for the perfect fit forward to present himself either before the NHL Trade Deadline or next offseason. This trade essentially buys them a year to scour the landscape for a winger they do want to invest in via trade or free agency, or further develop from within their deep prospect pool. Minnesota Wild Arena Renamed
This offseason is a pivotal one for the Minnesota Wild as they finally have money to spend. With the Ryan Suter and Zach Parise contracts off the books general manager Bill Guerin has some room to operate. The biggest possible splash for Minnesota is to lock up superstar Kirill Kaprizov for years to come. A contract extension is going to be expensive, and it may have him as the highest paid player in the league. Advertisement When Kaprizov and his teammates take the ice next season, they'll do so at the same arena, but with a new name. That may have worked towards fans adopting an easier moniker with the arena simply going as the Securian Center. Grand Casino Arena is probably going to take a bit longer to catch on. All signage throughout the arena will be replaced to reflect the change. Report: MN Wild Targeting Three Centers, Need One
The Minnesota Wild went into this offseason ready to make some serious waves, either via trade or free agency, possibly both. Their top need, as noted by Bill Guerin, is a top-six center that will allow them to comfortably trade away Marco Rossi. While the Stanley Cup Finals aren't even over yet, the summer isn't as young as you'd think. The NHL Draft is scheduled for two weeks from yesterday, June 27, and free agency begins early next week, July 1. Advertisement In a perfect world, the Wild would have their centerman swap complete by the start of the draft, but for sure by July 1, when Rossi will be able to sign offer sheets from other teams that Minnesota would be forced to match, or lose their 23-year-old former No. 9 overall pick. Minnesota Wild running out of center options… Unfortunately for the Minnesota Wild, their search hasn't gone as planned. Their No. 1 target, as reported by Michael Russo and Joe Smith (The Athletic) was 'one of us' center, Brock Nelson, but then he signed with the Colorado Avalanche. Credit: John E. Sam Bennett is going to cost too much and plans to return to Florida. Claude Giroux plays mostly wing and wants to remain a Senator. Could that mean Marco Rossi could return, after all? Advertisement Maybe, but in a new note written at The Athletic on Saturday, there are still three others centers who president of hockey operations Bill Guerin still has his eyes on. According to the aforementioned, Joe Smith (The Athletic), Guerin doesn't just want to land one of John Tavares, Jonathan Toews or Matt Duchene… the Wild 'need to get [one].' Their top choice, at least for now, appears to be Tavares. The Wild's main need is up the middle, and now they're on Plan B after target Nelson re-signed with the Avalanche. Tavares' priority has been to stay in Toronto, but if he gets to market, he'd give Minnesota the experienced, two-way center who could take some pressure off Joel Eriksson Ek. The Wild need to get Tavares, Duchene or Jonathan Toews to address the position, especially after missing out on Nelson. Joe Smith – The Athletic Minnesota Wild Target No. 1: John Tavares John Tavares, 34, would immediately give the Minnesota Wild what they are looking for, at the center position. That is, if he isn't slapped by father time, which wasn't the case last season, when he potted 38 goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the most he's scored since 2018-19, when he put 47 pucks in the net. Advertisement In 75 games last year, Tavares posted 74 total points on 18:14 average TOI. His goals and points would have led the Wild, who were led by Matt Boldy's 27 goals and 73 points. If Billy can pry him from Toronto and keep himself from offering the world for an aging star… this move would be a huge win in Minnesota. Imagine this dude next to Kirill Kaprizov or Matt Boldy… Wild Target No. 2: Matt Duchene Dallas Stars center, Matt Duchene (also 34 y/o), would seemingly fit the bill too, though Smith and Russo noted in their joint article earlier this week that the Minnesota Wild don't appear to be crazy about him. His 82 points placed the Haliburton, Ontario native tied for 20th in the league. In his 16 year NHL career, Matt Duchene has played for five different teams. MN Wild Target No. 3: Jonathan Toews Meanwhile, Minnesota Wild fans know exactly who Jonathan Toews is, after they watched his star-studded Blackhawks teams of yesteryear cleanup on our favorite NHL club. Fast forward a few years, and we haven't seen Toews play since 2022-23, after he stepped away from hockey to recover from Chronic Immune Response Syndrome (CIRS). But in 2025-26 the now 37-year-old Toews is planning a comeback. Advertisement His last couple seasons in Chicago, the former superstar was a shell of himself, posting 68 total points in 124 games between 2021-2023, along with a -45 point differential while on the ice.
