RBI reviews ULI rollout with lenders amid slow adoption
Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) leadership on Wednesday met officials of banks and non-banking finance companies to discuss the way to boost lending under the Unified Lending Interface (ULI), which is positioned as the UPI for loans. M. Nagaraju, secretary, department of financial services, and RBI deputy governor, T. Rabi Sankar, were present at the meeting. The two officials had also met last month in New Delhi to discuss scaling up ULI, which is a digital public infrastructure in the lending space and aims to unlock critical financial, non-financial and alternative data for lenders to enable informed credit decisions. "Some lenders told the RBI that they already have the technology stack and tie-ups in place for different loan products and, hence, the integrating ULI has been slow." The person cited above also attributed a slow start to regulatory scrutiny on the type of instruments that would have been at the vanguard of the ULI, developed by the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub. "Adoption also was lower because of the overall caution among lenders, especially in the unsecured segment," said the person aware of the discussions. "Incidentally, the early use case was around small-ticket personal loans , which came under regulatory scrutiny." Live Events More than 600,000 loans amounting to ₹27,000 crore have been disbursed using the ULI platform until early-December 2024, RBI data showed. According to industry executives, the sources of lead for lenders in ULI was mainly surrounding personal loans and unsecured small-business lending, both of which dried out because of cautious lending. "Some lenders also tried supply chain financing via ULI. But that too did not take up. Lending is a growing market, hence ULI will also pick up gradually. However, there needs to be the establishment of a use case," said a senior official with a Mumbai-based NBFC. At least 36 lenders, including various banks and NBCs have been onboarded till December 2024. These lenders are using more than 50 data services including, authentication and verification services, land records data from six states, satellite service, property search, dairy insights and document verification, to gain customer information.

Spending Cuts, Iran Strikes, Epstein Row: Where Americans Stand On Trump's Actions?
Last Updated: New polls show broad public disapproval of Donald Trump's domestic spending bill, handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, and military strikes on Iran. New CNN polls reveal significant public dissatisfaction with three key issues under US President Donald Trump's second term: his sweeping domestic spending bill, the administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case and the recent military strikes on Iran. Across all three, public opinion shows broad disapproval, deepening skepticism of Donald Trump's leadership on budget, foreign policy and government transparency. Roughly 61% of Americans say they oppose the newly signed GOP domestic policy bill, with most expressing concern that Donald Trump has gone too far in slashing federal programs. Just 37% now approve of his handling of the budget, down 11 points since March. Although opinions are still settling- only a third of Americans say they followed the bill's developments closely- early sentiment leans clearly negative: 58% say program cuts have gone too far and 51% believe the bill will harm the economy. When asked how it would affect their own families, 37% expect things to get worse compared to just 16% who anticipate improvement. Frustration Over Epstein Case Transparency Following the US Justice Department's release of a memo stating there was no evidence of a client list or foul play in Jeffrey Epstein's death, half of Americans said they were dissatisfied with how much information the government has made public. Only 3% expressed satisfaction. Dissatisfaction crosses party lines but is most pronounced among Democrats (56%) and independents (52%), compared to 40% of Republicans. Many Republicans (38%) say the issue doesn't matter to them either way. Americans Reject Iran Strikes Donald Trump's decision to launch airstrikes against Iran has also been met with majority disapproval: 56% of Americans oppose the move, with strong disapproval outweighing strong support. Concerns go beyond the strikes themselves- about six in ten Americans say they distrust the US President's judgment on using military force against Iran and fear the action will escalate the threat to US interests. SBI eyes ₹25,000 crore via record QIP, sets floor at 2.5% discount
State Bank of India (SBI), the largest lender in the country, has launched a share sale to institutional investors to raise upto ₹25,000 crore, the biggest qualified institutional placement (QIP) so far by an Indian firm, and has set a floor price of ₹811.05, which is at a 2.5 per cent discount on Wednesday's closing price. Separately, the bank's board approved another ₹20,000 crore fund raise by issuing bonds. Life Insurance Corporation, Singapore's GIC, Capital International, and ICICI Prudential AMC are some of the investors in the share sale, investment-banking sources said. This is the first QIP by the banking major since 2017, when it had raked in ₹15,000 crore. The fund raise, aimed at supporting growth, will add over 60 basis points to its capital adequacy ratio, which was 14.25 per cent as on March 31, 2025, analysts said. The government holds 57.43 per cent in SBI, and that is likely to come down to about 55 per cent after the share sale. 'The issue price will be determined in consultation with book running lead managers,' it said, adding it might offer a discount of not more than 5 per cent on the floor price calculated for the issue. Citigroup Global Capital Markets, Morgan Stanley India, HSBC Securities, ICICI Securities, Kotak Investment Banking, and SBI Caps are the issue's lead managers. SBI's market capitalisation has gone up from ₹3.25 trillion at the end of March 2021 to ₹7.13 trillion at the end of March 2025, according to its 'Analysts Presentation' for 2024-25. Market capitalisation based on Wednesday's closing price was ₹7.42 trillion. The bank's board, which met on Wednesday, approved issuing Basel III-compliant Additional Tier-I and Tier-II bonds, up to ₹20,000 crore to domestic investors during FY26. The fund raise is subject to the Government of India's approval, SBI informed the stock exchanges. SBI's capital adequacy ratio stood at 14.25 per cent with Common Equity Tier-I of 10.81 per cent, Additional Tier-I of 1.3 per cent, and Tier-II of 2.14 per cent and as of March 2025, according to the Annual Report for FY25. Its advances grew 12.03 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) in FY25 to ₹42.21 trillion and deposit books 9.48 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹53.82 trillion in FY25. According to the Reserve Bank of India's data, SBI's market share in aggregate domestic deposits was 22.60 per cent and that in aggregate domestic advances was 19.72 per cent at end of March 31, 2025. Its risk-weighted assets rose to ₹36.49 trillion at the end of March 2025 from ₹32.22 trillion a year earlier.
