BBC pundit issues apology to Ben Shelton's girlfriend Trinity Rodman for embarrassing blunder at Wimbledon

The Sun09-07-2025
A BBC commentator has been forced to apologise for repeatedly getting the name of Wimbledon ace Ben Shelton's girlfriend wrong.
US soccer star Trinity Rodman - daughter of NBA legend Dennis - lashed out at Andrew Castle for calling her "Tiffany" during her boyfriend's fourth round clash on Monday.

In a fiery Instagram post, the Washington Spirit forward, 23, said: 'For those who don't know… my name is TRINITY not Tiffany.'
Trinity also took aim at the broadcaster for mentioning her estranged dad.
She wrote: 'My dad's not even in MY life. No need to bring him up during HIS [Ben's] matches when I don't even want him talked about during mine. It's him and his loved ones' moment.'
Early on in the blockbuster clash - which saw Shelton progress through to the quarter finals to face Jannik Sinner - Castle had described five-time NBA winner Dennis as 'one of the greatest sportsmen of all time'.
He said: "That's interesting. Trinity Rodman is a part of the women's US football set-up. She's in the national team, scored a goal in the World Cup final.
"Her father is Dennis Rodman, who is one of the greatest sportsmen of all time in my opinion.
"The greatest rebounder in NBA history and the biggest wind-up merchant of all time. Nobody wound people up more than Rodman.
"When he was with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA... they used to ruin Michael Jordan 's life. That was her dad."
He added: "There is nobody she doesn't know in the hierarchy of US sport. She's a big star herself."
As 10th seed Shelton, 22, grabbed an early tiebreak in the third set with an impressive dropshot against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, the camera panned to his jubilant girlfriend celebrating with his family.
BBC pundit left red-faced as Wimbledon star Ben Shelton corrects her embarrassing blunder live on TV
The moment prompted Castle to mention Trinity's dad again - and get her name wrong.
He said: "Tiffany Rodman there - world cup winning US soccer player.
"Daughter of Dennis Rodman - one of the finest basketball players and the greatest rebounder of all time in the NBA."
He was forced to apologise for the blunder on Tuesday night.
A spokesman for BBC Sport said: 'Andrew apologises for mispronouncing Trinity Rodman's name during the Ben Shelton vs. Lorenzo Sonego match.'
Shelton's sister was jokingly booed by the Wimbledon crowd in his post-match interview after he revealed that she works in a bank and needs more time off to support him.

The show examines how we went from being just one of many types of human to the dominant form of life on the planet. But who is the presenter and where have you seen her before? The curtain is being lifted on the epic story of humanity in a brand new BBC series. It charts our species first emergence through to becoming the sole humans on earth across 300,000 years. Based on breakthroughs in DNA technology and remarkable fossil evidence, the show explains how the lives of our ancestors shaped who we are today. It also explores the stories of the other human species - like Neanderthals - and the role we played in their demise. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Human continues with another brand new episode tonight (July 21) at 9pm on BBC Two. The full series is also available to watch on iPlayer right now. Who presents Human on BBC? Paleoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi presents Human on BBC Two | BBC Studios The five-part documentary series is presented by paleoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi. The academic is also described as an explorer and has worked as a writer as well as a stand-up comic. Speaking about Human, Ella said: 'I hope they see how absolutely remarkable and unlikely our story is – it boggles my mind and it takes my breath away and I hope they feel the same way. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Human is a five-part series on BBC Two | BBC 'I hope they feel something too – we went to the ends of the Earth to tell this story, we wanted to walk in our ancestors' footprints and honestly the ancients sometimes made that easy for us. At one point we went to one of the most exciting sites in the Americas – the actual footprints of what is likely a mother and child, in New Mexico. 'They are probably amongst the very first Americans – you can see from the pressure in the footprints that at times she picks the child up, sometimes on the right hip, sometimes on the left. To get to see snapshots in time like this it's so emotive… and human.' What has Human's presenter done before? Ella Al-Shamahi might not yet be the kind of household name that someone like David Attenborough or Brain Cox are - but she has had plenty of presenting experience prior to Human. She was the host of Neanderthals - Meet Your Ancestors in 2018. Prior to this BBC Two series, Ella's most recent presenting gig was with Channel 4's What Killed the Whale? It explored why whales wash up and die on UK beaches every year. If you love TV, check out our Screen Babble podcast to get the latest in TV and film.

Angel Reese's video game cover proves WNBA hates Caitlin Clark because she is 'white', podcasters claim

Angel Reese 's presence on the cover of a popular video game continues to fuel uproar among her critics and fans of her WNBA rival, Caitlin Clark. Now Members Club, a conservative sports and culture podcast, has seized on the issue, which co-hosts Charly Arnolt and Arynne Wexler are blaming on DEI and a league that functions as 'welfare for tall lesbians,' according to Wexler. 'It's a very toxic place,' Wexler said of the league. 'And [Arnold] mentioned in that introduction about what's going on that this should be a place where it's feminism, women uplifting women.' Instead, Wexler claimed, 'women sabotage other women,' and the proof somehow lies on the cover of NBA2K26. The annual WNBA version NBA2K features Reese, the Chicago Sky All-Star, emblazoned across its front rather than Clark, the Indiana Fever guard and reigning Rookie of the Year. And even though gamers still have the option to buy the same exact game with the NBA 's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on the box, Arnolt believes 'there should never be a woman on the cover of NBA 2K.' 'First of all,' she began, 'I don't know which man is going to be like: "I want to buy the WNBA edition of NBA 2K26. That's the one I want to put on my shelf when my friends come over and we're playing video games." Reese responds to the crowd after she's introduced at last weekend's All-Star game 'But for whatever reason, they decided to make a WNBA edition and then decided that Angel Reese should be on the cover over Caitlin Clark, which does not make sense,' Arnolt continued, returning to the Reese-Clark debate. 'I mean, Caitlin Clark is the poster child of the WNBA,' she continued. 'So, this is like DEI on top of DEI.' Reese, who is black, and Clark, who is white, have been framed as bitter rivals since last season, with many conservatives claiming the Fever guard is somehow the victim of 'reverse racism.' 'I mean, it's reverse racism, which is just racism, but it's not just that,' Wexler said. 'It's like they hate [Clark] because she's white, because she's straight, and because she's excellent.' 'Caitlin Clark doesn't care about Angel Reese,' Arnolt argued. 'Like, she just doesn't. She's very concerned with like playing her game. She's got like a great boyfriend. She seems like she's got her life together.' Meanwhile, Arnolt described Reese as 'super petty towards Caitlin Clark,' although she stopped short of explaining why. 'We can probably definitively say Caitlin Clark is the better player. I mean, she was the WNBA player of the year last year,' Arnolt continued, mistakenly crediting Clark with the MVP award won by the Las Vegas Aces' A'Ja Wilson. Reese and Clark have had a few tense moments on the court dating back to their college days at LSU and Iowa, respectively. Reese famously gestured at Clark en route to the 2023 national championship and tournament MOP honors – a move that Clark has since defended. Clark, meanwhile, has been whistled for a flagrant foul on Reese, who tried to confront her rival after the May incident. Reese has since dismissed the incident as a 'basketball play,' thereby diffusing any perceived tensions. Zak Armitage, the NBA 2K general manager, recently explained the company's decision to include Reese on the cover of this year's WNBA version of the game. 'NBA 2K26 is celebrating the bold, the confident and the visionaries, and WNBA All-Star Angel Reese carries all that on and off the court,' Armitage said in a statement. 'In her sophomore year in the WNBA, Angel Reese has made waves, created impactful conversations, and inspired the next generation. She's a storyteller and has helped the WNBA grow its audience.'
