Manny Machado's late homer helps Padres finish off Mets

July 30 - Manny Machado clouted a three-run homer Tuesday night to cap a five-run seventh inning that lifted the San Diego Padres to a 7-1 win over the visiting New York Mets. Machado's 20th homer of the year scored Elias Diaz, whose two-run double earlier in the inning off Jose Butto (3-2) upped the margin to 4-1, and Luis Arraez. It marked the second straight game that San Diego pieced together a five-run inning. Wandy Peralta (5-1) pitched a scoreless sixth to claim the win in relief as the Padres earned their fourth straight win and upped their lead on Cincinnati for the National League's last wild-card spot to three games. Neither starting pitcher was involved in the decision. New York's Sean Manaea gave up only three hits and a run over five inning with no walks and four strikeouts, while San Diego rookie Ryan Bergert permitted two hits and a run in four-plus innings, walking four and whiffing four. The Mets lost right fielder Juan Soto to a left foot contusion in the fourth inning after he fouled a pitch off his foot. Soto completed his at-bat and grounded out to second baseman Jake Cronenworth but departed before the bottom of the inning. The Padres initiated the scoring in the first via Jackson Merrill's two-out RBI single to right that chased home Fernando Tatis, who led off with a single, moved to second on Arraez's sacrifice bunt and reached third on Machado's fly ball to center. New York tied the game in the fifth, although it was also a bit of a missed opportunity. Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo sandwiched walks around a Luis Torrens single to fill the bases with no outs, chasing Bergert. But reliever Jeremiah Estrada came in and struck out Francisco Lindor before pinch-hitter Starling Marte's sacrifice fly to right cashed in Baty. However, Pete Alonso popped up to strand a pair. Merrill gave San Diego the lead for good in the sixth when he chopped a triple over Alonso's head into the right field corner, scoring Arraez from first. --Field Level Media

Live Nation to speed up purchase of additional 24% Ocesa stake as Mexico live music market grows

July 29 (Reuters) - Live Nation Entertainment (LYV.N), opens new tab said on Tuesday it will accelerate the purchase of an additional 24% stake in Mexican concert promoter Ocesa, as Mexico becomes a prominent market for live music events. The investment will give Live Nation greater control over the Mexican market, where concert attendance has more than tripled since 2019, reflecting the country's growing economic importance in the global entertainment industry. The New York-listed entertainment giant will acquire the stake from Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento (CIE) ( opens new tab, which will retain a 25% holding in Ocesa. The deal also extends Ocesa CEO Alejandro Soberón's contract through 2032. The transaction will provide CIE with proceeds exceeding 12 billion Mexican pesos ($641.03 million), which it may use to pay down debt and fund working capital needs. Live Nation's expanded ownership comes as Mexico's live music sector has experienced rapid growth. The partnership between Live Nation's global infrastructure and Ocesa's local market expertise has created more opportunities for international artists to perform in Mexico while expanding fan access to live entertainment. Mexico's live music boom has been driven by increased disposable income among younger demographics and a surge in international touring following the pandemic recovery. The expanded partnership positions Ocesa to book more major global acts while Live Nation gains deeper access to Latin America's fastest-growing entertainment market. The deal is expected to close by the end of next month, pending CIE shareholder approval. Live Nation acquired a 51% controlling stake in Ocesa Entretenimiento in 2021, purchasing 40% from Grupo Televisa and 11% from CIE. ($1 = 18.7200 Mexican pesos)

D-backs (and Tigers) await news on Eugenio Suarez's hand

July 29 - There was plenty of drama during the first game of the Arizona-Detroit series on Monday night, though it had little to do with the outcome. The Tigers and Diamondbacks will play the second game of the three-game series on Tuesday evening in Detroit. The Diamondbacks and the many trade suitors for Eugenio Suarez got a huge scare in the ninth inning when the slugging third baseman was hit in the hand by a Will Vest pitch. Suarez said afterward that X-rays on his index finger were negative. He planned to have more tests on Tuesday. "Right now, it's painful, obviously. The good news is the X-ray was negative," he said postgame. "We'll see (Tuesday) what else they're going to do. Right now, I will do my best to try to be back soon." The Tigers are one of many teams reportedly interested in the services of Suarez, who is among the top five in the majors with 36 homers. Detroit won the series opener 5-1 and will seek a third straight victory following a six-game slide. The Tigers' roster is in flux. Outfielder Kerry Carpenter was activated from the injured list on Sunday. The team learned on Monday that starting pitcher Reese Olson would miss at least the remainder of the regular season with a shoulder injury, so the Tigers acquired Chris Paddack from the Minnesota Twins to replace him. Detroit also placed outfielder Parker Meadows on the IL with a quad issue. Andy Ibanez, who was recalled from Triple-A Toledo, gave the offense a spark with a double and solo homer Monday night. "I told (Ibanez) before the game, don't try to make up for lost time in one game," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. "So if that's his way of just settling in -- bam, double, homer. I know it means a lot to him. It crushed him to be sent down. But he went down, did his work and waited for the next opportunity." American League All-Star Casey Mize (9-4, 3.40 ERA), who is scheduled to start for the Tigers on Tuesday, has gotten roughed up in his past two starts. The right-hander allowed six runs in three innings to the Seattle Mariners just before the break, then yielded five runs (four earned) and 10 hits in four innings at Pittsburgh last Tuesday in an 8-5 loss. "I just look at myself and what I can do better," Mize said. "I think the role of the starting pitcher is so important, just setting the tone for the game and not having those guys on the field for too long." Mize, who will face the Diamondbacks for the first time, originally was scheduled to pitch on Monday. He was given an extra day of rest after experiencing some minor knee tightness. Right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (10-6, 4.76 ERA), Mize's mound opponent, has delivered three straight solid starts. He held the San Diego Padres to two runs in eight innings on July 9. In his first outing after the All-Star break, Pfaadt tossed seven scoreless innings against St. Louis. In his latest start, he was charged with two runs in 5 1/3 innings in his team's 4-3 loss to the Houston Astros on Wednesday. Pfaadt didn't give up a run in the first five innings but was pulled shortly after allowing back-to-back doubles in the sixth. "Ran into some trouble in the sixth, and (it) came back to bite us," said Pfaadt, who will face the Tigers for the first time in his career. "That's what's most disappointing." --Field Level Media
