Inspections during Ashura: PFA seals 24 beverage units, discards substandard drinks
The inspection campaign was carried out to ensure the provision of safe beverages and water at sabeels across the province.
Food safety teams inspected 720 beverage, water and juice units. A total of 24 units were sealed over violations of food safety laws while 216 units were fined Rs5.419 million. Moreover, 228 units were issued improvement notices due to unhygienic practices.
DG PFA Asim Javaid said that food safety teams discarded 7,400 litres of juice and beverages over 1,000 litres of water and more than 80kg of expired chemical ingredients. These included prohibited and expired substances being used in drinks meant for sabeels.
He said teams found serious violations such as poor hygiene conditions, insect infestation and lack of medical certificates of food handlers. He added that mixtures prepared with banned and expired ingredients were also recovered and discarded on the sp
Director general further stated that inspections are being carried out in two shifts daily by specially deployed Muharram food safety teams. He said that checking of sabeels and langar points near majalis and roadside camps is underway, along with public awareness efforts.
He has requested the public to play its role in ensuring safe food by making informed choices and reporting violations on PFA helpline 1223.

Ashura holidays of medics cancelled in Punjab
Punjab government has cancelled the Ashura holidays of doctors, nursing and paramedical staffers, alerting all hospitals regarding special arrangements in connection with the occasion. The hospitals administrations have been advised to enhance coordination with rescue, police and district authorities to ensure immediate response in case of an emergency. The hospitals were also instructed to make preparations to ensure the availability of space in wards in case of an emergency. According to sources in the health department, the hospital emergency departments and trauma centres will remain on high alert and senior professors will be available for duty along with the staff. Availability of medicines will also be ensured during the processions on both days. The sources said instructions in this regard had been issued to the major district hospitals, including the big healthcare facilities in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan, Gujrat and Narowal. The provincial health minister will visit the Mayo Hospital, Services Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and other healthcare facilities along the route of the main procession in Lahore. Monitoring teams will inspect the arrangements and services in the hospitals in the districts across the province. The Punjab government has instructed the doctors and nurses to perform their duties round the clock on Muharram 9 and 10. Ambulance services and blood banks have also been ordered to ensure preparations to perform special duties on the two days. The government has constituted the monitoring committees to check the arrangements in the hospitals, while departmental action will be taken against the medical officials found absent from duty. The health authorities have cancelled the holidays of the senior doctors, medical officers, paramedical and nursing staff as part of arrangements for the observance of Ashura. In addition to keeping operational their wards, emergency and outpatient departments, the major hospitals will also set up medical camps along the procession routes. "We have issued an alert to all district headquarters and teaching hospitals and the doctors and other staff will be on duty. The professors will also remain present in hospitals," said Punjab health department spokesman Syed Hamad Raza.

Minister reviews preparations for heavy rains
LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Health and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management, Khawaja Salman Rafique chaired a meeting here on Friday, to review preparations for the expected heavy rainfall. Additional Director General PDMA, Syed Jawad Haider briefed the meeting that heavy showers are likely to begin on Sunday night, with this year's monsoon rainfall is expected to be 25 percent above normal. The Provincial Minister directed authorities to ensure swift drainage of rainwater from low-lying areas and stressed that all available resources will be deployed to safeguard the public during the rainy spell. Moreover, the four-day haematology training course organised by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore was concluded Friday with a certificate distribution ceremony. Addressing the ceremony, the vice- chancellor underscored the urgent need to restore clinical credibility through structured training and improved diagnostic practices. Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore emphasized the critical need to regain lost credibility in clinical and laboratory practice. 'Even correct interpretation of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) report is often overlooked by professionals. Skills that should be embedded in our professional programs are conspicuously absent,' he remarked and said, 'We have restructured our MPhil and PhD programs to be time-bound and competency-driven. Our focus now is to build faculties in various disciplines and ensure consistent academic activity that contributes to stronger professional communities." Head of UHS Haematology department, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Asif Naveed, shared plans to make such focused training a regular feature at UHS.
