Hong Kong China qualifies for the Men's Rugby World Cup 2027
Hong Kong also made history as only the second Asian team, after Japan, to qualify for the tournament according to a statement released by World Rugby.
'There has been an enormous commitment from the team over the last 12 months to best prepare. The team travelled to Chile, Paraguay and Brazil last summer, hosted Brazil twice in November, completed a full domestic rugby season, then held pre-tournament camps in Australia and Japan,' said Head Coach Andrew Douglas following the Asia Rugby Emirates Championship victory, the statement said.
The Asia Rugby title granted the team an automatic qualification for the tournament taking place in Australia in October, 2027.
The team, currently ranked 23rd in the World Rugby Men's Rankings, won their sixth consecutive champions trophy at the Incheon contest on Saturday.
Chris Brooke, chair of Hong Kong China Rugby, congratulated the team on their achievement: 'We have always said that potential Rugby World Cup qualification marked a huge opportunity for the four teams competing in this tournament, and indeed for rugby in Asia as a whole – and we are very proud to be joining Japan as a second Asian team at a Men's Rugby World Cup,'
'Qualifying for a Men's World Cup is a historic moment that will act as a further catalyst for growth at all levels of the game,' he added, according to the press statement.

Hong Kong defender's debut pride amid mental challenges and career uncertainty
Hong Kong's newest international footballer, Clement Benhaddouche, said his shock debut against China on Tuesday had come amid the 'most uncertain period of my career'. Currently without a club, the defender was keeping fit by training daily with a friend in Happy Valley when he received the invite to South Korea. The 29-year-old had been cut from an original 28-man squad, as Hong Kong opted to travel to the East Asian Championship with 24 players, rather than the permitted 26. He arrived on Saturday to cover Shinichi Chan's return to Shanghai Shenhua, then found himself 'thrown in at the deep end' 72 hours later, following a first-half injury to Yue Tze-nam in Hong Kong's 1-0 defeat. 'I wasn't expecting the call to come, so I was a little bit surprised,' Benhaddouche, who was told he would be needed in the middle of last week, said. 'I was the 25th guy, and Shinichi getting called back left a spot open for me. 'Everything was a bit last minute. I did the best I could in unusual circumstances, coming from an off-season and having not known if I was going to be in the squad, but trying to stay fit. Clement Benhaddouche hopes his shock Hong Kong debut will help secure him a contract for the new season. Coming up against their in-form winger [18-year-old Wang Yudong] wasn't easy, but I tried to do the best with what I had.'

Hong Kong hero's emotional journey to 2027 Rugby World Cup
Three years ago, Tom Hill was contemplating a one-and-only shot at qualifying for a Rugby World Cup. Advertisement In his 30s, the Australian-born centre considered the 2022 global repechage tournament in Dubai to be a singular chance to reach the pinnacle of his sport, having already committed five years to doing so. Days before the team flew to the Middle East, Hill told the Post he would not 'get another shot in four years' time – this is it'. 'I think most [of the squad] are like that, some of the younger guys might get another shot in four years, good luck to them, but this is it for me,' he added. How things change. On Saturday, Hill, alongside plenty of those from Dubai, was on the pitch as Hong Kong qualified for the 2027 World Cup in Australia with a 70-22 victory over South Korea.
