HC provides fee relief to PG dental students
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court gave interim relief to the PG dental students, allowing them to pay 60 per cent of the fees and stated that no student should be compelled to pay increased/differential fees during the interim period. The High Court delivered a crucial interim order in writ petition Nos. 20249 and 20198 of 2025, which challenged the arbitrary tuition fee hike introduced through GO Ms No 107 for postgraduate (MDS) dental courses across Telangana. The Court observed that these petitions were similar to WA No.341 of 2025, where students had already been granted protection. Students must be allowed to attend classes without any disruption. No student should be compelled to pay the increased/differential fees during the interim period. The State government and the University have been directed to submit their counter-affidavits within three weeks. This is a temporary relief, and the final verdict would follow after a detailed hearing. The previous government had issued a GO 107 on fee to be paid by the PG dental students. In the private dental colleges, under the A-category seat, the maximum fee is Rs 6 lakh. Similarly, the maximum fee under B-category seat is Rs 13.5 lakh. As per the GO, the students were allowed to pay 60 per cent of the fees. However, this time, the private medical colleges have reportedly asked the students to pay full fees. The convener quota students who approached the court got the support of the court. The Court observed that there should be no restrictions on students attending the colleges. Meanwhile, the All India Dental Students and Surgeons Association (AIDSA) has welcomed this order as a major victory for students. For months, AIDSA has been actively opposing commercialization of dental education, demanding transparency and fairness in fee structures. AIDSA firmly demands the complete rollback of GO, which had led to an unreasonable and unaffordable fee burden on MDS aspirants. AIDSA President Dr Manzoor Ahmed said that this victory was proof of the power of unity and lawful resistance. AIDSA remains committed to fighting for justice, affordable education, and the rights of dental students across India, he added.

BRS leaders accuse Congress of betraying BCs
Hyderabad: Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council S Madhusudana Chary on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, alleging that it has consistently betrayed Backward Classes (BCs) since India's independence. Speaking at the Maha Dharna organised by BC organisations at Indira Park on Tuesday, the BRS leader accused Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of being a 'liar and a betrayer of trust.' Labelling him a 'synonym for fraud and conspiracy,' he blamed the Congress party for relegating BCs to 'second-class citizens' in the country. He alleged that the party, which had been in power for sixty years, had 'cheated them by not conducting a caste census, not setting up a BC ministry, and not sharing in wealth creation.' This, he asserted, is why the party has 'lost its roots across the country.' He further criticised that Congress came to power by making 'empty promises' like 42 per cent reservations and an annual allocation of Rs 20 crore for BCs, despite knowing the 'many legal tangles' in conducting a caste census in the state. The BRS leader criticised the government for not demonstrating sincerity in legalising the BC quota since assuming power. MP V Ravichandra alleged that the Congress, which 'came to power by making false promises to BCs in the Kamareddy Declaration, was now completely drowning them.' He stated that BC bills were sent to the President via the Governor but 'no efforts were being made for their approval.' Talasani Srinivas Yadav demanded that 42 per cent reservation be implemented for BCs as per the promise made through Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the Kamareddy Declaration. He warned that if they 'try to cheat BCs, the party would create an earthquake.' Lashing out at the caste census for being 'flawed,' Yadav accused the government of 'reducing the BC population by falsely counting 20 lakh people without going to their homes in the capital city.' He demanded that the BC bills be passed and included in the Ninth Schedule at the earliest. Gangula Kamalakar alleged that Congress has a 'history of fraud from then to now.' He accused the party of attempting to secure BC votes before the Assembly elections and now 'showing a stubborn hand.' He demanded that reservations be allocated to the weaker sections according to population ratio.

Supreme Court grants interim relief to cartoonist, but says offensive posts a matter of concern
Supreme Court (ANI) NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim protection from arrest to Indore-based cartoonist Hemant Malviya, who has been booked over a cartoon shared on social media containing derogatory references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the RSS and said that it would be a test case for the court on how to deal with the offensive posts. The court listed the matter after August 15 for further hearing. A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Aravind Kumar granted interim protection after he tendered unconditional apology, despite strong opposition from Madhya Pradesh govt which placed some of his other offensive posts on social media. The court directed him to file the apology in Hindi in the form of an affidavit and directed the parties to complete the pleading till the next date. At the outset, advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for Malviya, informed the bench that the petitioner was offering an apology. Additional solicitor general K M Nataraj, appearing for the state, placed before the bench screenshots of other objectionable social media posts allegedly made by Malviya. The bench said that one of the posts was 'very very offensive' and could attract various provisions of Indian Penal Code. 'What is happening today, all kinds of statements are being made on social media... the language they use. There are some among the lawyer community also doing will have to do something. Lets this case be a test case,' the bench said, posting the case for after August 15.
