KUCHING (June 17): Hope Place Kuching is supply special milk powder supplements to a 33-year-old woman fighting Stage 4 cervical cancer.
The non-governmental organisation (NGO) recently visited Chai Chee Yieng, who lives each day clinging to the hope of brighter days ahead.
'With stage 4 cervical cancer, Chai, while struggling with pain, is fighting each day, not giving up,' it said in a statement yesterday.
According to Hope Place, Chai was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 and had to quit her job as a cashier at a supermarket, losing her stable income.
'After a surgery, she now has a tube hanging out at her hip, connected to her kidney, to drain out excess liquid. She had also gone through chemotherapy and radiotherapy countless times.
'She is now very weak and can barely walk by herself — she depends solely on her family,' it said.
Chai told Hope Place: 'I feel so frustrated and helpless but I want to be better.'
The NGO said Chai lives with her mother and 29-year-old brother, Yeen, in Matang, adding that the brother had quit his job to take care of his sister.
'Her mother, 63, has leg problems and uses a walking cane. However, she still does all the household chores and cooks for her children,' it added.
It is understood that Chai is receiving RM200 monthly from the state Social Welfare Department, but is not enough to get by.
Those wishing to donate may do so via Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160) or visit its Facebook page for the S Pay Global QR code.

Govt continues to fund retirees, underprivileged at IJN

KUALA LUMPUR" The government continues to finance retirees and underprivileged patients who require treatments that are not available at government hospitals, enabling them to seek care at the National Heart Institute (IJN). Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that the government sponsored a total of 44,257 patients at IJN last year. This includes 26,782 retirees, 16,303 government officers, and 1,172 underprivileged patients. "The treatment cost for these patients at IJN last year amounted to RM595 million, where RM358 million was for retirees, RM200 million for government staff, and RM37 million for underprivileged patients. "This data clearly shows that the government is still financing retirees and underprivileged patients who require treatments that not available at government hospitals to seek care at IJN," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN–Bera), who asked whether IJN still has a welfare fund to assist underprivileged patients, as it is understood that the fund has since been abolished. Dzulkefly explained that the patient must first seek treatment at a government hospital and be referred by a general physician/cardiologist/emergency medicine specialist at the government hospital to IJN. "In emergencies, retirees and government staff may seek treatment at private hospitals, including IJN, subject to the terms and procedures stipulated in the applicable circulars. "Additionally, for underprivileged patients, approval for government subsidies is subject to a socioeconomic assessment by the medical social welfare officer from the Health Ministry," he said. Last year, it was reported that the Health Ministry was discharging all civil servants and pensioners to cardiac centres operated by the ministry due to the government's cost-cutting measures. The ministry acknowledged that prudent cost control measures were necessary due to the annual increase in expenses resulting from patient referrals to IJN. However, it said that patients were only discharged from IJN when their conditions were stable, with a monitoring period of at least six months to a year for adults, and one to two years for children.

Hope Place Kuching helps single mum juggling work, three kids after husband's death

KUCHING (July 25): A single mother of three is receiving assistance in the form of basic food supplies and milk powder for her youngest child, following the passing of her husband in April this year. According to Hope Place Kuching, 39-year-old Sim Pei Pei, who resides in a shoplot at MJC, has been struggling to make ends meet while caring for her three school-going children, aged between 2 and 11. 'Back in April, Sim's husband, who worked as a van driver, returned home around noon, saying he wasn't feeling well. This was the last Pei Pei heard from him,' said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement yesterday. 'She found him unresponsive when she returned home later that evening.' Hope Place said Sim currently works as a clinic assistant at a private clinic on Rubber Road, earning a minimum monthly salary. As she works during the day, her children are cared for by a nanny, whom she pays RM850 per month. 'Though the nanny's fee is expensive, Pei Pei has no choice, as a secure job is not easy to come by,' the NGO added. Sim and her children are currently staying in a shoplot owned by her late husband's sister, rent-free. However, she still bears the cost of utility bills such as water and electricity. Compounding her expenses, Sim's youngest son has been diagnosed with severe asthma. He requires the use of an inhaler and frequent hospital visits, further straining the family's limited finances. Hope Place is appealing for public donation to help support Sim and her children. Individuals can donate to Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160), or via S Pay Global using the QR code available on its Facebook page. Donation receipts will be issued upon request. 7,862 Homeless Individuals Taken In Since 2021

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- A total of 7,862 homeless individuals have been taken in by the Social Welfare Department (JKM) from 2021 until May this year, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. The yearly breakdown is as follows: 1,528 people in 2021, 1,280 in 2022, 2,080 in 2023, 1,987 in 2024, and 987 up to May this year. Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number with 1,742 cases, followed by Penang (1,288) and Johor (1,199). 'In terms of age, 515 were under 18, while 5,068 were aged between 18 and 59, and 2,018 were 60 and above. The ages of some individuals could not be confirmed,' she said during question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. She was responding to Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin), who asked for updated homelessness data by state and age group, as well as the government's plans to address the issue, especially in major cities. Nancy said the JKM acts on public complaints and also carries out regular and joint operations with agencies such as the Ministry of Health, Immigration Department, National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), and local authorities (PBT). In response to a supplementary question on the 2022 review of the Destitute Persons Act 1977, she said the government had identified outdated provisions and found that a more practical and suitable approach is needed. 'The ministry is working on comprehensive strategies to tackle homelessness. These efforts include enforcement against beggars and the homeless to ensure initiatives are well-coordinated and focused on helping them rebuild their lives,' she said. -- BERNAMA
