Hope Place Kuching helps single mum juggling work, three kids after husband's death
Sim (second right) and her children pose for a photo call with Hope Place representatives during the delivery of food aid and milk powder at her residence. KUCHING (July 25): A single mother of three is receiving assistance in the form of basic food supplies and milk powder for her youngest child, following the passing of her husband in April this year. According to Hope Place Kuching, 39-year-old Sim Pei Pei, who resides in a shoplot at MJC, has been struggling to make ends meet while caring for her three school-going children, aged between 2 and 11. 'Back in April, Sim's husband, who worked as a van driver, returned home around noon, saying he wasn't feeling well. This was the last Pei Pei heard from him,' said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement yesterday. 'She found him unresponsive when she returned home later that evening.' Hope Place said Sim currently works as a clinic assistant at a private clinic on Rubber Road, earning a minimum monthly salary. As she works during the day, her children are cared for by a nanny, whom she pays RM850 per month. 'Though the nanny's fee is expensive, Pei Pei has no choice, as a secure job is not easy to come by,' the NGO added. Sim and her children are currently staying in a shoplot owned by her late husband's sister, rent-free. However, she still bears the cost of utility bills such as water and electricity. Compounding her expenses, Sim's youngest son has been diagnosed with severe asthma. He requires the use of an inhaler and frequent hospital visits, further straining the family's limited finances. Hope Place is appealing for public donation to help support Sim and her children. Individuals can donate to Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160), or via S Pay Global using the QR code available on its Facebook page. Donation receipts will be issued upon request. Hope Place aids malnourished Serian boy as family struggles to make ends meet
Hope Place representatives pose with the family during the basic food aid handover. KUCHING (June 13): Hope Place Kuching is providing basic food aid to a struggling family in Kampung Taee, Serian whose eight-year-old son is severely malnourished. Romy Demian Mary was referred to the non-governmental organisation (NGO) by a social worker from Serian Hospital following concerns about his health conditions. During a recent visit, Hope Place found Romy living with his mother Mary, two siblings, and their grandparents in a dilapidated wooden stilted house. In addition to severe malnutrition, Romy also suffers from a hearing impairment, Mary told Hope Place. 'Although Romy looks very thin, he is very active and sociable,' Hope Place said. 'He enjoys spending his free time fishing at the nearby river and even boasted to us that he made his own fishing rod and digs up earthworms to use as bait.' However, the NGO added that according to Mary, Romy is a picky eater who avoids rice and eats very little vegetables. It also disclosed that Mary is a single mother who has difficulties in finding a suitable job in the village. 'Mary usually goes fishing for her family's dinner. Romy's grandfather Balan, 68, still does odd jobs in the village and plants vegetables in their home garden,' said Hope Place. Meanwhile, the family is receiving RM450 monthly from the state Welfare Department. Hope Place calls for donations to help more needy families and individuals. Donors can deposit directly to its Maybank account 511289001160 or scan the S Pay Global QR code on Facebook. Hope Place steps in to aid struggling siblings with mental health issues
Hope Place representative Mary Vun (left) takes a photo with the siblings after handing over food aid. KUCHING (June 9): Hope Place Kuching is providing basic food aid to two siblings with mental health issues who are struggling to make ends meet. According to a statement, Petrus Labon, 49, and Roselind, 52, do not have stable income due to their mental health, and have been depending on social welfare aid and charity from others to get by. 'Petrus suffers from schizophrenia and has been on regular injection. Never violent or aggressive, the community that he lives in knows Petrus as a person who loves to go around the village and talks with everyone. 'Almost every day, Petrus wanders around the village, smiling and greeting everyone,' it said after a visit on the duo in Serian. It is learnt that Petrus' parents took care of him until they passed away and his sister, Roselind took over the job. Roselind, who holds an OKU (person with disabilities) card, does not like to talk to strangers and prefers to be with her own company, said Hope Place. 'Most days, Roselind collects wild vegetables by herself for their daily meals. Despite her reclusive attitude, Roselind takes good care of their house and Petrus' well-being. 'She cooks meals daily, does housekeeping and makes sure everything is always neat and tidy,' it said. Hope Place said the village head's assistant, who wished to remain anonymous, plays a role in making sure that both Petrus and Roselind are well. 'The village head also helps keep both the sibling's identity card because Petrus once burned his identity card,' it added. Hope Place also noted that Roselind is receiving the monthly aid of RM300 from the state Social Welfare Department. Hope Place extended appreciation to the village head's compassion and understanding toward the siblings, and was glad that the village's church members also care for the duo and offer to help at times. Those wishing to donate may do so via Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160) or visit its Facebook page for the S Pay Global QR code.
