'Very special' film with perfect rating will leave 'everyone sobbing'
Nowhere Special, a certified tearjerker, is the brainchild of Uberto Pasolini, who served as its producer, writer, and director.
The film poignantly narrates the tale of John, a single father who, after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, must find a suitable adoptive family for his four year old son, Michael.
Set against the backdrop of Northern Ireland, Nowhere Special subtly delves into themes of love, loss, and profound familial bonds as John embarks on the heartrending task of ensuring his son's future.
Inspired by a true story, Pasolini reportedly drew from an article he read about a terminally ill father who had to secure a new family for his son before his impending death.
Nowhere Special made its world debut at the Venice Film Festival in September 2020 and subsequently hit UK cinemas on 16 July 2021. The film saw its US theatrical release on 26 April 2024, reports the Express.
The deeply moving drama features James Norton and Daniel Lamont in lead roles, with support from Eileen O'Higgins, Valene Kane, Keith McErlean, and Valerie O'Connor. Norton's compelling portrayal of the terminally ill John earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards in 2021.
With a stellar 100 per cent critics approval rating and an audience approval rating of 93 per cent on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Nowhere Special has certainly left a lasting impression on both critics and viewers alike.
One critic praised the film, saying: "This Irish drama is what happens when little movies get it right - respecting the situation instead of exploiting it, and exploring a difficult choice instead of suggesting that the built-in emotion of the challenge is all that's needed."
Another described it as: "A measured, emotional ripper... a 35-year-old window cleaner and single father who must find a home for his four-year-old son when he learns he has only a few months to live... Details accrue; anger steels. A steady hand gets the story through."
A third critic was moved by the film, writing: "Nowhere Special is something special indeed. If you aren't shedding well-earned tears by the end of this film you simply are not human."
Meanwhile, another reviewer noted: "For a film about loneliness and death, it's tender, intelligent and life-affirming without ever being maudlin and mawkish. A rare and distinguished film indeed."
Audience reactions were equally heartfelt, with one viewer commenting: "Difficult to watch in places (particularly if you are the father of a young boy) but astonishing performances by the two leads make this one of the best films I have ever seen."
One fan raved: "I watched it and it was amazing. I haven't seen a film this good in many years. I suggest having a box of tissues handy. Right from the start it starts to pull on your heartstrings and doesn't let go. James Norton and the young newcomer, Daniel Lamont were brilliant onscreen together. This is a film I would recommend to others."
Another viewer shared their thoughts, saying: "Sad, poignant story that'll make you cry but a lovely performance from James Norton in the lead and delightful chemistry with his on screen son Daniel Lamont."
Nowhere Special can be rented for a cosy night in on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video at the cost of £3.49.

'Gruesomely romantic horror movie' lands huge 90% Rotten Tomatoes score
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A new body horror movie has landed a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score after being branded 'a giddy grotesquerie' by impressed critics. Together, starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, landed in US cinemas this week, ahead of a UK premiere on August 15. Michael Shanks' scare-fest follows lovebirds Tim and Millie who move out to the country, where they have a bizarre, supernatural encounter. However, things take a creepy turn when their flesh begins fusing to each other, bringing them much closer than they ever anticipated. Although the flick hasn't been out long, it has gone down very well with film buffs, and currently claims a near-perfect score from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 79% mark from fans. Heaping praise on the film, Movie Brief's Michael Nordine raved: 'One of the more gruesomely romantic horror movies ever made.' 'A giddy grotesquerie that has midnight-movie crowd-pleaser written all over it,' Nick Schager of the Daily Beast agreed. Owen Gleiberman, for Variety, penned: 'It's fun (in a rather bumptious way), it stars two very good actors playing a couple who have as many issues as couples do in real life, and it works as a totally unhinged yet far from mindless thriller built around a Big Idea.' Deadline Hollywood Daily's Glenn Garner hailed: 'Although Alison Brie and husband Dave Franco have shared the screen in the past, they truly sink into each other with some skin-crawling, albeit heartfelt and hilarious performances in writer-director Michael Shanks' feature debut Together.' As the Guardian's Benjamin Lee added: 'A convincingly gory argument for being single.' 'Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other,' the official synopsis reads. 'With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.' More Trending Filmmaker Michael previously opened up about the unsettling plot in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, admitting that it was inspired by his own relationship. 'I think when anyone is in a long-term relationship, there comes a point where you realize you have the same friends, eat the same food, breathe the same air – you start to wonder if you can truly tell where you end and your partner begins,' he told the outlet. 'I thought that was a really compelling place to start to examine in a relationship – what if you took that old cliche of sharing a life and took it to somewhere visceral, and horrifically literal?' Together is in US cinemas now, ahead of a UK release on August 15. Got a story? Stevie Nicks cancels tour dates just days before first gig due to injury
Stevie Nicks has been forced to postpone a series of upcoming tour dates after sustaining a shoulder fracture that requires time to heal. The 76-year-old music icon took to Instagram to share the news directly with fans, confirming that concerts scheduled for August and September will be rescheduled. 'Due to a recent injury resulting in a fractured shoulder that will require recovery time, Stevie Nicks' scheduled concerts in August and September will be rescheduled,' she wrote. 'Please note that October dates will be unaffected.' The Fleetwood Mac legend added that the tour is expected to resume on Wednesday, October 1 in Portland, Oregon. 'Stevie looks forward to seeing everyone soon and apologizes to the fans for this inconvenience,' the message concluded. Fans who have already purchased tickets are advised to retain them, as they will be valid for the rescheduled shows. Specific details about new dates and venues will be made available at the original point of purchase. Nicks had initially announced a nine-date tour across the US and Canada back in April, with performances slated for August and October. Due to overwhelming demand, additional shows were later added, including a launch night at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on August 8, as well as stops in Hollywood, Florida and Detroit in September. October was set to bring her to cities including Portland, Sacramento, Atlantic City, Charlotte, and Hartford. The news comes after Nicks postponed her Glasgow gig at short notice after having minor surgery for a leg injury. The Dreams singer was due to appear at the OVO Hydro earlier this month but organisers said she needs a 'few days of recovery' following a medical procedure. Even more recently, Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham officially confirmed the re-release of their 1973 duo album Buckingham Nicks. The famously acrimonious former bandmates caused fans to 'crash out' with a matching pair of social media posts in June, and then the appearance of a mysterious billboard a few days later. More Trending Many took to social media to speculate that the pair might finally be on speaking terms again after famously feuding for decades. Then, they informed the world that a re-release of Buckingham Nicks – which they recorded before joining Fleetwood Mac – will be available September 19. For now, fans will need to wait just a little longer to see the mystical frontwoman return to the stage. The silver lining? Nicks plans to be back on the road this autumn. Got a story? Emmerdale cruel John Sugden twist 'foreshadows' final showdown with Robert
Emmerdale's latest episode saw John Sugden's cruel plan to keep Robert Sugden on side revealed to viewers, and with that it may have teased a final showdown for the brothers There was a worrying scene on Emmerdale on Friday night that saw John Sugden seemingly plot revenge on his brother Robert Sugden. Despite them appearing to clear the air, or at least come to an agreement, John's true agenda was revealed to fans. This week John was left in hospital after Robert attacked him during a tense showdown. Robert had no idea though that John was recording the moment he struck him at the back of the head with a spanner. Viewers learned this on Friday, when the end of the episode showed John watching it back on his laptop. It comes amid fans believing Robert's own real plan was given away in the episode, and he might not be playing nicely has he's claimed. We'd already seen John feign fear over Robert visiting him, before Robert practically begged his villainous brother for forgiveness. John threatened him, telling him that if he went back on his word in regards to dropping his vendetta as well as leaving Aaron Dingle alone, he "knew" what he would do. Robert obviously didn't know that John had set up the attack after goading him, leading him to his camper van where a camera was recording. In the footage we only see the moment John walks towards home and is struck by Robert with the tool. John falls to the ground as Robert watches on. It likely also caught the moment Robert wiped the tool and hid it, but even the attack alone is enough for John to get Robert locked up given the crime he spent six years in prison for. Fans had actually noticed the mirroring of events, as in 2019 Robert attacked Lee Posner in similar circumstances. Robert had confronted Lee after he raped his sister Victoria Sugden, and Lee goaded him until Robert snapped. John orchestrated Robert's latest crime, and now he has him exactly where he needs him. But John is ready and waiting for his brother to turn on him again, keeping hold of the video evidence to use if necessary to get rid of Robert. But could it all be foreshadowing a major showdown? Maybe the current battle between the brothers is just the beginning and a taster of John's comeuppance at the hands of Robert. Robert more than any other characters is well and truly onto John and his dark crimes. If he manages to find the proof and expose him, John will hopefully face his downfall and be punished for his actions, including the murder of Nate Robinson. So will it come down to another John vs Robert battle at the end, and was the attack and John's actions, with John threatening revenge if Robert goes against him, all a massive hint of what's ahead? If so, it could be a major tease that the storyline will conclude with Robert taking John down as fans are hoping for, and John's final attempts to come out on top.
