Ryan Christopher Triplett, 21, of Mobile, was arrested by Mobile police in December 2022 following a traffic stop, according to the United States Attorney's Office Southern District of Alabama.
During that stop, police found a Glock .40-caliber pistol that was fully loaded and equipped with an illegal machinegun-conversion device, also known as a Glock switch, a USAO news release said. The Glock switch turned the single-shot pistol into a fully automatic weapon.
'During an interview with police, Triplett admitted that the pistol was his and that he knew it was illegally modified,' the release said.
United States District Judge Terry F. Moorer sentenced Triplett to 13 months in prison and three years of supervision upon his release, according to the USAO.
Triplett was ordered to pay $100 in special assessments and forfeit his pistol and ammunition to the United States, according to the release.

Fake immigration lawyer cashed in, put clients at risk of deportation, feds say

A woman posing as an immigration attorney in Pennsylvania lied on clients' asylum forms, putting them at risk of deportation, federal officials said. Fatima DeMaria, the 65-year-old owner of Immigration Matters Legal Services in Oxford, was arrested and charged with eight counts of asylum fraud and eight counts of mail fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania said in a July 31 news release. McClatchy News reached out to the woman's attorney but did not immediately receive a response. DeMaria is accused of filling out asylum applications for her clients, form I-589, but falsely claiming why they were seeking asylum in the U.S., prosecutors said. She did so between 2021 and 2024, prosecutors said. The form is meant for those who are in the United States but who are not citizens, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. She stated applicants were seeking to stay in the country due to 'political opinion' and 'Torture Convention,' federal officials said. However, this was not the reason her clients were seeking permission to stay in the U.S.. DeMaria did not tell her clients she was filing 'frivolous' forms as a way to help them obtain work permits, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, but had them sign the documents. If those applications were denied, her clients could face deportation proceedings and the 'baseless asylum application' could jeopardize those people if they ever needed immigration benefits in the future, prosecutors said. She charged thousands for the immigration tasks she was not licensed to do, charging between up to $9,000 per individual or up to $15,000 per couple, federal officials said. Prosecutors say they believe she made up to $1 million fraudulently. DeMaria often asked her clients to pay her in cash or in transactions that were deposited into her personal bank accounts, officials said. 'Hundreds of thousands of dollars' were eventually withdrawn at casinos, prosecutors said. If convicted, DeMaria faces up to 240 years in prison and a $4 million fine. The FBI in Philadelphia is looking to identify any victims of DeMaria/s through this form /vailable/in English and Spanish. Oxford is about a 55-mile drive southwest from Philadelphia.

Third man charged in teen's ‘17 drug robbery death

As Anthony Triplett was set to get out of prison for killing a 14-year-old boy, charges were unsealed July 21 for a different criminal case for Diego Serna's Nov. 2, 2017 death in Gary's Miller section. Triplett, 27, of Gary, is the third man charged in Serna's killing. The case has been delayed for years. He has pleaded not guilty. His next hearing is Sept. 11. Against his better instincts, a 20-year-old man went to a Gary apartment complex on Nov. 2, 2017, to sell 1.5 ounces of marijuana to Augustus 'Gus' Johnson, his then-Hammond Walmart co-worker, charges allege. It was a setup. The man ended up seriously wounded and his friend, Serna, 16, of Hammond, was killed. Gary Police responded to the Marquette Apartments, 405 South Huntington St. They found Serna, who appeared lifeless, on his stomach. The marijuana dealer survived. Johnson, now 48, is awaiting sentencing after signing a plea deal in 2021. At various points, prosecutors filed to squash the deal, then go forward with it. He told police that he, another Walmart co-worker, Triplett, talked about robbing the dealer months earlier. That evening, they picked up co-defendant Marcell Ellison in East Chicago. At the Gary apartments, as the marijuana dealer approached Johnson's car, Triplett came up behind him and fired four shots, charges state. Ellison also fired shots toward the man. Johnson told police he was the getaway driver. Ellison's trial is set in November. The case was further complicated after the original detective got indicted in a federal child porn case. It has since been reassigned to a different investigator. Former Gary Police Det. James Bond, 52, of Crown Point, a former deputy chief, commander and homicide supervisor, was indicted in September 2024 after soliciting an explicit video from a 17-year-old boy working as a city intern in the police department last summer. Investigators found a latent cached screenshot on his iPhone. Triplett was sentenced in December 2021 for killing 14-year-old Arion Lilly, who was shot in the back after leaving a barber shop, lawyers said. Triplett said he was fleeing another car shooting at him and didn't mean to hit the boy.
