RM450mil flood mitigation project in Melaka gets green light
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the project will span a 15km stretch from Sungai Durian Daun to the mouth of Sungai Kuala Baru, and will include the construction of four flood retention ponds in Kampung Londang, Kampung Jeram, Kampung Lubuk Redan and Taman Gamelan.
"This is a long-term initiative to tackle the flood problems affecting Masjid Tanah," he told reporters after visiting a Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) pump house as part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) engagement programme for the Lendu constituency at Taman Masjid Tanah Ria.
Also present were State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
For short-term flood prevention, Ab Rauf said the DID is implementing RM3.3 million worth of state-funded projects, including the installation of pumps, construction of pump houses and compact substations, and river maintenance works.
Two existing flood retention ponds, Durian Daun and Solok Duku, are also undergoing rehabilitation at a combined cost of RM1.85 million, with completion expected by December.
On a separate matter, Ab Rauf urged the state's stage bus operator to take greater responsibility for safety standards, calling for improved driver training following a series of fatal public transport accidents.
He said several incidents were linked to negligent driving, resulting in loss of life.

Melaka govt ramping up efforts to curb abandoned private land
MELAKA: The Melaka government is ramping up efforts to address the growing number of abandoned private lands across the state, warning that continued neglect could turn such plots into "man-made jungles". Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh ( pic ) said the state is taking a proactive stance by engaging private landowners to ensure idle land is put to productive use rather than left to deteriorate. 'We cannot allow these lands to sit untouched and become overgrown wastelands. 'One of our key strategies was to invite private landowners who have not developed their land to work together with the state government," he said. Speaking on the final day of the 15th Melaka state legislative assembly sitting at Seri Negeri in Ayer Keroh on Wednesday (July 23), Ab Rauf stressed that the government remains open to partnership and dialogue. He said such collaborations could pave the way for developments in agriculture, commercial enterprises or other productive sectors, benefiting both the state's economy and the owners themselves. 'Unfortunately, one of the biggest challenges we face is the unwillingness of some landowners to cooperate. 'We will also continue to offer advisory services and development support to encourage more structured and well-planned land use," he said. As part of the broader plan, Ab Rauf said the state has rolled out the food security enhancement programme in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture. 'This programme aims to sustainably utilise idle land for agricultural purposes, and at the same time contribute to the national food security agenda,' he said. Ab Rauf also pointed out that the state is prepared to act if landowners fail to respond. He said that among the steps available to authorities is issuing formal notices to urge landowners to clear and maintain their plots. "Land administrators can enforce Sections 125 to 129 of the National Land Code, which relate to breaches of express conditions on land use, if no action is taken by owners," he said. He added that landowners are given a specific timeframe to respond to these notices. 'Failure to reply or comply could result in enforcement action, including the forfeiture of land under Section 129 of the same Act,' he added.

Miri Marina Bridge to transform city into ‘San Francisco of Sarawak', says Premier
Abang Johari (left) and his Cabinet colleagues giving the thumbs-up to the groundbreaking ceremony of iconic Miri Marina Bridge. MIRI (July 22): Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg says the upcoming Miri Marina Bridge will be a game changer for the city, comparing its future appeal to the 'San Francisco of Sarawak'. He said the RM450 million project will not only offer scenic views of the South China Sea and surrounding Canada and Lambir hills, but also drastically cut travel time between Pulau Melayu and the Marina area from 30 minutes to just five. 'This landscape upgrade in Miri, with its iconic facilities and connectivity infrastructure, aligns with the city's image as the resort city of northern Sarawak, putting it on par with other tourist destinations,' Abang Johari said at the groundbreaking ceremony at the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre today. The two-lane cable-stayed bridge will span 650 metres with a 1.2km total length and 20-metre clearance. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year and would take 36 months to complete. Abang Johari said Sarawak's infrastructure growth is part of its long-term economic plan, which has attracted global recognition, including from the World Economic Forum and World Bank. He said Sarawak's revenue reached RM14.6 billion last year, and the state now aims to hit RM300 billion in GDP within 10 years, building on its gas development roadmap. 'Our GDP is now touching RM199 billion from RM140 billion previously. Over the next five years, a RM280 billion target is achievable provided there is political stability and the people of Sarawak remain united,' he said. The Miri Marina Bridge project also supports broader plans to connect Miri with key sites such as the planned Beraya township and Unesco sites in Niah and Mulu, along with improved road links to Marudi, Long Terawan, Bukit Buda and Lawas. Power supply in the region will also be upgraded from 275kV to 500kV to meet growing demand. Urging Sarawakians to remain united, Abang Johari warned against a 'crab mentality' and called for teamwork like that of ants to move Sarawak forward. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas also praised the state's infrastructure progress, noting that 16 bridges are currently being built across Sarawak, with several already completed. He added that the Premier will officiate the opening of the new Jepak Bridge in Bintulu this week. Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki, state ministers, local leaders, and representatives from NGOs and government agencies.
