Student-led study offers hope for paddy revival
The findings of the study by Architha Manoj and Jyothika Krishna, conducted as part of school science fair, have been published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Research and Analytical Reviews.
In the paper titled Soil Revival Eco-friendly Farming for Agriculture Sustainability, the researchers evaluated the use of Effective Microorganism (EM) solution as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers. The study revealed that EM-treated rice seeds not only enhanced crop growth but also significantly improved soil health.
Degraded soil
More than 80% of local farmers surveyed in Mavelikara-Thekkekara grama panchayat in Alappuzha admitted they had abandoned paddy cultivation due to poor yields caused by degraded soil. Laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments conducted as part of the study confirmed that EM treatment led to better seed germination, longer shoot and root development, increased biomass, and ultimately higher grain yields compared to conventional NPK fertilizer use.
'The soil in Thekkekara panchayat has become acidic and nutrient-deficient due to the prolonged use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides,' the researchers noted. Soil samples collected across 10 wards showed pH values as low as 4.8, indicating high acidity. After EM treatment, soil nutrient levels, including nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, showed marked improvement. Field trials demonstrated that paddy grown from EM-treated seeds yielded more healthy grains and fewer chaff, pointing to a direct improvement in productivity.
Microbial diversity
'We saw an increase in germination and better growth metrics under both lab and field conditions. Most importantly, the soil started to regain its microbial diversity. We hope the model can be replicated across the region,' the researchers added.

Apart from Architha and Jyothika, the research team also included NSS School Botany teacher Sreekala C.G., SD College Botany department former head C. Dileep, and researcher Karthika T.P. The team worked in collaboration with the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kayamkulam, research wing of SD College, Alappuzha, and the local Agriculture office. After completing the project, both students graduated from the school in the 2024-25 academic year.

77.81% pass in Plus Two higher secondary, 70.06% pass in VHSE
As many as 77.81% of the students who appeared for the Plus Two higher secondary examinations in March this year have become eligible for higher studies. The pass percentage was 0.88 percentage points lower than 78.69% last year, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty, who announced the Plus Two higher secondary and vocational higher secondary results, said here on Thursday. It was also the lowest since 2010 when it was 74.93. This is the second successive year that the pass percentage has dipped below 80% since 2015. The Minister said this reflected the increase in quality of education. However, steps would be taken to address the dip in results. The Minister said that of the 3,70,642 students who appeared for the Plus Two higher secondary examinations, 2,88,394 became eligible for higher studies. Of them, 1,65,234 were girls (86.65%) and 1,23,160 were boys (68.44%). The pass percentage for both girls and boys declined from that of last year, though it was greater for boys (1.17 percentage points) than for girls (0.56 percentage points). As many as 30,145 students (22,663 girls and 7,842 boys) secured A+ grade in all subjects, down from 39,242 last year. They included 22,772 from Science, 4,510 from Commerce, and 2,863 from Humanities. The biggest fall was in the Science group – it was 31,214 last year. As many as 41 students (seven boys and 34 girls) received a full score of 1200/1200. It was 64 less than the number last year. 100% for 57 schools As many as 57 schools secured 100% results. Six were government schools, 19 aided, 22 unaided, and 10 special schools. The pass percentage was 83.25 in the Science stream, 74.21 in Commerce, and 69.16% in Humanities. As compared to the 2024 results, the pass percentage declined in Commerce (1.9 percentage points) and Science (0.59 percentage points), but improved in Humanities by 2.07 percentage points. The aided sector topped with 82.16%, followed by the government sector with a pass percentage of 73.23, and the unaided sector with 75.91. In the special school category, the pass percentage was 86.4. The decline in the government sector was by 1.83 percentage points from that last year, but much bigger was the drop in the special school category – by 12.14 percentage points. The pass percentage among Scheduled Caste students was 57.91, an increase from 56.85% last year, and among Scheduled Tribe students it was 60.28, also an increase from 53.91% last year. In the technical stream, the pass percentage was 70.76, as compared to 70.01% last year. Seventy-two students got A+ in all subjects. In the art stream, conducted at Kalamandalam Art Higher Secondary School, the success rate was 80.36. It was 100% last year. Two students got full A+. In the open school (SCOLE-Kerala) category, the pass percentage was 46.52, up from 40.61 last year. VHSE results In the vocational higher secondary examinations, 70.06% of those who appeared for the Continuous Evaluation and Grading NSQF (National Skills Qualifications Framework) scheme examination qualified for higher studies, a decline of 1.36 percentage points from the 71.42% last year. As many as 26,178 students had appeared for the examinations, and 18,340 qualified – 8,614 girls (81.91%) and 9,726 boys (62.1%). The pass percentage in Science was 67.93, Humanities – 74.21, and Commerce – 78.1. Wayanad district had the highest pass percentage – 84.46, while Kasaragod had the least – 61.7. All four schools for those with speech and hearing challenges registered 100% results. As many as 193 students secured full A+ grade this year, against 251 last year. Maximum students who secured A+ grade was from Thrissur. Nine schools had 100% results. Of them, five were government schools and four aided. Sixty-seven schools also had pass percentage below 50%.
