MotoGP: Álex Márquez reigns in Spain to take title lead as brother Marc crashes
After seven second-place finishes in sprints and races this season, Álex secured a dream race win on home turf in front of over 100,000 fans, with the Spaniard imploring them to increase the volume as he took the last few corners on the final lap in Jerez.
Marc Márquez (Ducati) squeezed his way through the crowd to embrace Álex in the winner's circle as they became the first brothers to both win in MotoGP. But the day belonged to the younger sibling, who leads Marc by one point in the standings after taking the chequered flag – waved by the Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz.
'The best birthday present, amazing. The first one in Jerez is something amazing,' said Álex Márquez, who celebrated his 29th birthday earlier this week. 'I cannot ask for more. It was a race where I was really clever in all the movements.'
France's Fabio Quartararo finished second to give Yamaha their first spot on the podium since the 2023 Indonesian Grand Prix, while Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia came in third.
An action-packed opening lap had pole-sitter Quartararo get a perfect start off the line to take the lead into turn one while Marc Márquez, Saturday's sprint winner, fell behind to fourth place.
Álex Márquez started in fourth and attempted to overtake those in front of him early on by threading the needle between bikes. He braked too late and fell behind while Marc Márquez and Bagnaia collided while jostling for position. With Marc running in third and trying to overtake his teammate, he crashed at turn seven as thousands of fans around the circuit groaned collectively.
The elder Márquez sibling rejoined in 22nd place with a damaged bike. Bagnaia immediately had another Márquez to contend with, as Álex came up behind him and elbowed the Italian out of the way to move up to second and put Quartararo in his sights.
The Yamaha rider tried his best to keep Álex Marquez at bay but on lap 11 the pace of the Ducati bike proved far too superior as he overtook Quartararo to draw a roar from the Márquez Grandstand. Once Álex was in the clear, he began to pull away and finished 1.56sec clear of Quartararo, who held off Bagnaia for second place.
'Incredible, to be on the podium is super special – especially with the gap to Álex and to keep Pecco (Bagnaia) behind in the race was so difficult,' said Quartararo, the 2021 world champion. 'It's been long years but super happy to be back on the podium in Jerez.' Maverick Viñales (KTM) finished fourth at his home race.

'See you in Le Mans,' Quartararo said, referring to the season's next race, the French MotoGP, which takes place in two weeks' time. Bagnaia was frustrated after his dreams of a fourth successive win in Jerez were dashed. 'Honestly I do not like races like this,' said the two-time world champion. 'Every time I was getting closer Fabio found something extra.'
Álex Márquez has 140 points after five races, with Marc second on 139. Bagnaia has 120 in third place, with fellow Italians Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio (both Team VR46) in fourth and fifth place, and Quartararo in sixth.
Jorge Martín, whose defence of the MotoGP title has been ruined by injury, is making progress after sustaining serious injuries in a crash in Qatar. The 27-year-old has three broken ribs according to Angel Charte, MotoGP's medical department head, as cited by his team Aprilia. 'The evolution is very positive,' Charte said.

Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo had a difficult relationship at times when the duo were at Real Madrid, but a reunion could be on the cards if manager's latest comments are anything to go by Jose Mourinho has said that he is ready to return to management in his native Portugal. Mourinho, 62, is currently at the helm of Turkish giants Fenerbahce after taking over in June 2024. However, after leading his side to a 2-1 victory over Portuguese second division side Portimonense in a pre-season friendly last week, Mourinho dropped the bombshell that he is ready to make a return to the country where it all began for him. Mourinho has not coached in Portugal since 2004, where he had spells with with Benfica and Porto. "I will come back to Portugal for sure. It hasn't happened yet, but it will happen," Mourinho told Sport TV last week. "Not because I feel close to the end, I feel far from that. I don't want to come to Portugal for a golden retirement or for my final years in my career." He continued: "I want to come to Portugal at the peak of my career, in good health and in top physical and mental shape. I will definitely return. Club or national team? Either, but not Portimonense, because they already have a good manager (laughs)." Rumours of discord between Mourinho, who was sacked by United in 2018, and Ronaldo were rife when the legendary coach managed the five-time Ballon d'Or winner at Real Madrid for three seasons. If Mourinho decides to take over the reins of his country it could have wider implications with Ronaldo still very much a focal point for the team, currently managed by Roberto Martinez. Mourinho and Ronaldo's relationship was fraught in the Spanish capital, with the Portuguese tactician often slamming his star player for what he perceived was a lack of tactical discipline. According to Guillem Balague's book, Cristiano Ronaldo: The Biography, Mourinho once engaged Ronaldo in a huge row after the forward took a throw-in too quickly. "After everything I've done for you, this is how you treat me? How dare you say that to me", Mourinho reportedly bellowed at Ronaldo. "I was saying it for the team because the team needed you to track back." Tensions worsened as Mourinho supposedly added: "Just so you know, many think like me here, but don't dare say it, they don't have the balls to tell you." It is then believed the pair had to be separated. Despite their difficulties, time heals all wounds and it seems that applies to the iconic compatriots. Speaking later on, and perhaps offering an insight into how he would coach a 40-year-old Ronaldo for the national team, Mourinho said: "I think you don't coach [him]. "Motivation, you don't need to give him. Ambition, you don't need to give him. Technique, you don't need to give him. You give some tactical adjustments and let the guy be happy." The two-time Champions League-winning boss was also happy to brand Ronaldo as one of "the best players of all time" and insisted that coaching him was "the highlight" of his career. He also moved to distinguish any bad blood too, saying: "A coach and a player may have their differences at a given time, but it ends there." Since leaving Porto in 2004, Mourinho has managed Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham and Roma. Ronaldo, clearly impressed by his old bosses' CV, has claimed that he would be open to working with Mourinho again. Sensationally, Al-Nassr star Ronaldo even lauded Mourinho as the best coach he has ever worked with – even above Sir Alex Ferguson. "I would put him at the top, I always say that," Ronaldo said. Mikel Arteta drops huge Viktor Gyokeres hint with telling response to transfer question
Arsenal are still working on a deal for the Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres and Mikel Arteta has now broken his silence on the chances of landing the Portugal star Mikel Arteta refused to entertain questions about Viktor Gyokeres during a press conference in Singapore, stressing that he is not Arsenal 's player - 'yet'. The Gunners are in talks with Sporting Lisbon over a deal which would bring Gyokeres, 27, to The Emirates. However, a sticking point in negotiations has been the structure of add-ons in the deal, with Sporting wanting any further payments to be easily achievable. Speculation over Gyokeres' future continues to dominate the narrative at Arsenal despite an influx of new signings in recent weeks. It's been reported that Arsenal had hoped to have Gyokeres on board before their pre-season tour, which has now kicked off. And when Arteta was asked for an update on the Gyokeres deal, the Spaniard's exact answer - where he stressed he will not speak about anybody until they are part of the group - has sparked a buzz amongst fans. "I cannot comment on any player who is not part of our group yet," the Gunners boss said with a smile when grilled on Gyokeres. "When we have something concrete to offer in any case to any player we will do that." Arsenal have completed deals for Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard and Noni Madueke. The signing of Cristhian Mosquera, a promising young centre-back from Valencia, is also expected to be confirmed by the club imminently. Arsenal fans convinced Arteta dropped major Gyokeres hint during presser
Fans believe Mikel Arteta may have let slip Viktor Gyokeres' impending arrival from Sporting as he was asked about the striker at a press conference on day one of Arsenal's pre-season tour of Asia. Speculation surrounding Gyokeres' future has dominated the the headlines ahead of Arsenal's trip to Singapore, with updates arriving at a pace throughout the course of the summer. 'There's still a long time in the window and we are seeking,' he added. 'We are short in terms of numbers and we have to improve the depth and the quality of the squad. 'We are constantly looking in the market but we've got to focus on the players that we actually have, work with them and I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far in the first ten to 15 days.' The Arsenal head coach is 'very pleased' with the support he has received from sporting director Andrea Berta and the rest of the board in the transfer market. 'Ideally, you want it [all transfer business] for day one of pre-season so we've done very, very well so far,' he continued. 'I'm very pleased with the way the club is supporting the necessities and improvements that we required in the team. 'I think Andrea [Berta] and the team are doing an excellent job as well, trying to push everything forwards. 'There's still a long time to go in the window and we have a lot of hopes that we can still improve the team. We're going to continue to try to do that.' Asked whether Arsenal are ahead of schedule with their transfer dealings, Arteta replied: 'I'm very pleased, that's what I would say. The moment that you see the club with an ownership and the ambition that they have, the alignment that we had with everybody on the board, with everybody that is connected with Andrea.' After several months of back and forth, Arsenal finally announced that a deal had been completed for Real Sociedad Zubimendi earlier this month – and Arteta has been blown away by the immediate impact his fellow countryman has made on the training field. 'It was a long, long process and he had a lot of opportunities to decide whether to come,' he explained. 'The good news is that this club is amazing and everybody wants to come to it. 'He left some very good opportunities to come to us and he's been very impressive. I think we're all very impressed with what we've seen in the last seven to 10 days. 'Once you have the player daily there, you see his character, his personality, his intelligence and how much he's going to bring to the dream. I'm very excited about him.' Arteta is similarly 'excited' about the arrival of Madueke, who became Arsenal's eighth signing from Chelsea in the last ten years.
