Israeli army says intercepted missile fired from Yemen
'Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted,' the Israeli army said in a Telegram post.
The Huthis have regularly fired missiles and drones at Israel since the war in Gaza broke out in October 2023, following an attack on Israel by the Huthis' Palestinian ally Hamas.
On Friday, Israel bombed the Huthi-held Red Sea ports of Hodeida and Salif following three missile attacks in as many days. It threatened to target the Huthi leadership if the attacks continued.
The Huthi administration said the strikes 'will be met with a painful response', according to the Huthi-run Saba news agency.
The Huthis, who control swathes of Yemen, have launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and Red Sea shipping throughout the Gaza war, saying they act in solidarity with Palestinians.
Their firing on the shipping route drew retaliatory strikes by the United States.
However in early May, the United States sealed a ceasefire with the Huthis that did not include Israel.

Federal posts: Sabah records most applicants
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: Jailani reaffirmed SPA's support for the State Government in widening job access through initiatives like the recent Kembara Kerjaya Madani SPA outreach in Kudat and Pulau Banggi. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah recorded a consistent upward trend in permanent and interim contract appointments in the federal civil service over the past three years since 2022. Public Services Commission (SPA) Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Jailani Muhamed Yunus said Sabah not only received the highest number of applications but also topped the chart in terms of new appointments last year, reflecting growing awareness among local youths of career opportunities in government service. 'Over the past three years, Sabah has maintained its position as the State with the highest number of applicants for vacancies in the federal public service. 'In 2024 alone, over 11 per cent of all civil service appointments were made in Sabah, making it the State with the highest number of recruitments. 'This is a very good indicator, showing strong awareness among Sabah's youths and graduates to join the civil service,' he said after a courtesy visit on Head of State Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu. He said SPA has also begun leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its recruitment processes, starting with initial assessments. The Candidate Psychometric (PC) system now uses AI to randomise test questions, preventing leaks and manipulation. This ensures each candidate receives a unique set of questions during entry-level assessments. AI is also being used to analyse personality traits and will eventually play a greater role in verifying personal records such as certificates and identification documents, streamlining the screening process before interviews. Jailani reaffirmed SPA's support for the State Government in widening job access through initiatives like the recent Kembara Kerjaya Madani SPA outreach in Kudat and Pulau Banggi. The programme offers interview tips and application guidance for jobseekers. Also present were Deputy SPA Chairman Datuk Zohari Said and SPA Secretary Datuk Ikhbal Hanam Mukras. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Canada to recognise Palestinian state at UNGA 2025, cites Gaza suffering
Speaking at a news conference in Ottawa after chairing a virtual Cabinet meeting, Carney said the move comes amid the "intolerable" humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. 31 Jul 2025 08:42am Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand listens to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney speak during a press conference after a Cabinet meeting to discuss both trade negotiations with the US and the situation in the Middle East, at the National Press Theatre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on July 30, 2025. Canada "intends" to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney said July 30, a dramatic policy shift he said was necessary to preserve hopes of a two-state solution. (Photo by Dave Chan / AFP) "Canada intends to recognise the state of Palestine at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025," he said, according to Anadolu Ajansi (AA). Carney reiterated Canada's long-standing support for a two-state solution -- an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace and security. He said Canada's recognition is tied to the Palestinian Authority's commitment to "much-needed reform,' and pledged stronger support for democratic governance in Palestine. "Canada will increase its efforts in supporting strong democratic governance in Palestine and the contributions of its people to a more peaceful and hopeful future," he said. He noted that "any path to lasting peace for Israel also requires a viable and stable Palestinian state.' Carney also described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as "intolerable and rapidly deteriorating,' and criticised Israel for allowing the situation to worsen. "Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has let the situation deteriorate in Gaza," he added. - BERNAMA-ANADOLU More Like This

Chief Minister: Jakarta meeting beneficial for Sabah
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji said the Ambalat issue was not discussed specifically during the meeting, as it falls under international law. Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor described the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation Meeting held in Jakarta on Tuesday as very positive and beneficial for Sabah. He said the Sabah Government's position was conveyed during the meeting and related matters are now being refined. 'We have already stated the State Government's position, and the discussions and meeting were very positive. 'Matters related to it are currently being refined, and this is very good for Sabah. 'That is all I can disclose for now,' he said. The Chief Minister was asked whether any specific issues concerning Sabah were raised during the consultation. To a question, Hajiji said the Ambalat issue was not discussed specifically during the meeting, as it falls under international law. 'As for the Ambalat issue, that will be deliberated based on international legal frameworks. 'So, nothing has been decided yet. Don't turn this into a political issue,' he stressed. Ambalat is a sea block in the Celebes Sea, located off Sabah's east coast and is the subject of a territorial dispute between Malaysia and Indonesia. It's geographically situated on the border between the two nations and is believed rich in oil and natural gas reserves. On Tuesday, Hajiji joined Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the bilateral consultation held at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. They were welcomed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was also present. Hajiji was accompanied by a high-level Sabah delegation comprising State Secretary Datuk Seri Sr Safar Untong, State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh, Internal Affairs and Research Secretary Datuk Awang Shaminan Ag Sahari and Lands and Surveys Department Director Datuk Bernard Liew. Hajiji and his delegation arrived in Jakarta the day before and attended a pre-council meeting chaired by the Prime Minister as preparation for the bilateral consultation. The Malaysia–Indonesia Annual Consultation serves as an important platform to strengthen diplomatic relations, economic cooperation and development collaboration between the two close neighbours. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
