Gujarat's employment engine stalls: MSME shutdowns, zero PMEGP uptake in key districts
In a damning indicator of policy failure, Gujarat has witnessed a breakdown in the implementation of the PMEGP, particularly in major districts like Surat and Navsari, which recorded zero applications for the scheme in 2024–25. This shocking data has emerged from a central government reply in the Rajya Sabha to Gujarat MP Narhari Amin, laying bare the state's crumbling employment generation apparatus.
The collapse is not isolated. PMEGP applications have plummeted from 19,654 in 2020–21 to just 7,793 in 2024–25, a drop of over 60 per cent, clearly revealing that Gujarat's youth are losing faith in the scheme. Even in tribal districts where the scheme was meant to be a lifeline, the numbers are alarming: only seven applications in Dang and Mahisagar, 16 in Chhota Udepur, and just two in Narmada.

Parliament extends President's Rule in Manipur by six months
The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed a statutory resolution to extend the President's Rule in Manipur by six months. The resolution, passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday, was approved by the Upper House amid protests by Opposition MPs over the Election Commission conducting a special intensive revision of Bihar's electoral rolls. The resolution, moved by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, was approved through a voice vote. President's Rule was imposed in the state on February 13, four days after Bharatiya Janata Party leader N Biren Singh resigned as the chief minister. His resignation came amid ethnic clashes between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities. At least 260 persons have been killed and more than 59,000 persons displaced since the violence broke out in May 2023. There were periodic upticks in violence in 2024. Singh resigned as chief minister amid allegations from Kuki-Zomi-Hmar groups that his response to the violence was partisan and that he had stoked majoritarianism. The BJP leader stepped down a day before his government was to face a no-confidence motion and floor test in the Assembly. The Opposition Congress had described Singh's resignation as belated and akin to 'shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted '. The last time President's Rule was imposed in Manipur was between June 2, 2001, and March 5, 2002, for 276 days due to political instability. President's Rule under Article 356 transfers the powers and responsibilities of the state government to the Union government and the functions of the state Legislature to Parliament for the duration of its enforcement. The only exception is the operation of High Courts, which are unaffected.

Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha adjourned till tomorrow amid Opposition ruckus
New Delhi, Aug 5 (UNI) Both Houses of Parliament —Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha— were adjourned today till tomorrow, August 6, following repeated disruptions by Opposition MPs who continued protests, demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in poll-bound Bihar. In the Rajya Sabha, a heated exchange also had taken place between Chairman Harivansh and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge over Kharge's press note criticising the deployment of CISF personnel in the House as Opposition members stormed the well. Kharge stated, 'We are astonished and shocked at the manner in which CISF personnel were made to rush into the well of the House when members were exercising their democratic right to protest.' The Government and the Rajya Sabha Chairman rejected this claim. Earlier, after proceedings resumed at 2 PM, both Houses witnessed noisy sloganeering and protests by Opposition MPs. The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day as the Opposition refused to relent on their demand for a debate on Bihar's SIR process. Presiding officer Sandhya Rai tabled the legislative document and called upon Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to move the proposal of the bill, 'Re-adjustment of Scheduled Tribe Representation in Assembly Constituencies of Goa State Bill, 2024'. After rejecting some opposition amendments, the bill was passed by voice vote. Following the bill's passage, Rai appealed to protesting members to return to their seats, stating that the government is ready to discuss every issue and urging them not to disrupt the proceedings. However, the protests continued, with some members shouting slogans and carrying placards opposing the SIR process. Seeing no abatement in the uproar, Rai adjourned the proceedings for the entire day. Earlier when the Lok Sabha proceedings began in the morning with Speaker Om Birla initiating the Question Hour, Opposition members entered the well of the House shouting slogans. In response, Speaker Birla remarked, 'Do you not want the Question Hour to continue?' He appealed to members to maintain the dignity of the House, but protests persisted. Birla added, 'Despite repeated requests, you are lowering the decorum and dignity of the House. It is not appropriate to deliberately disrupt proceedings in a planned manner.' Amid the chaos, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, responding to a supplementary question, said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, several schemes have been implemented over the past 11 years to double farmers' incomes, resulting in increased earnings for millions of farmers. The ongoing Monsoon Session, which began on July 21, has witnessed multiple disruptions, largely due to Opposition protests over Bihar's SIR exercise. Except for a two-day debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, the session has largely been hampered by the disruptions. The government plans to push for the passage of the National Sports Governance Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday, aimed at ensuring greater transparency in sports federations. Income Tax dept detected Rs 30,444 cr undisclosed income, conducted 465 surveys in FY25
The Income Tax department has conducted 465 surveys, leading to detection of undisclosed income of Rs 30,444 crore in the 2024-25 fiscal year, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha said whenever any credible information of 'direct tax' evasion comes to its notice, it takes suitable actions, including surveys, search and seizure operations, assessments, to bring to tax, the undisclosed income. In FY24 and FY23, 737 and 1,245 surveys were conducted by the I-T department and undisclosed income of Rs 37,622 crore and 9,805 crore, respectively, were detected. Live Events The total number of groups searched during FY25 stood at 1,437 and assets seized stood at Rs 2,504 crore. In FY24, 1,166 groups were searched leading to total asset seizure of Rs 2,555 crore. In FY23, Rs 1,766 crore assets were seized following searches in 1,437 groups.
