Chelsea hold Mohammed Kudus swap deal talks as separate winger bid considered
West Ham have rebuffed the chance to sign multiple Chelsea players as part of a potential swap deal for Mohammed Kudus. The 24-year-old Hammers attacker has three separate release clauses written into his current contract at the London Stadium but they're only active for the first 10 days of July.
The buy-out clauses are set at £80million for European clubs, £85m for fellow Premier League sides and a whopping £120m for Saudi Pro League teams. Beyond that, West Ham are thought to be open to offers for the Ghana international, who is under contract until 2028 but the Irons do also have a 12-month extension option.
In the past few days, Graham Potter's side are understood to have snubbed the chance to trade Kudus in a multi-player package deal with Chelsea.
It's believed the West Ham hierarchy would, however, consider straight-cash proposals even though internally, Kudus is regarded as one of the club's best players.
West Ham have previously held an interest in the likes of defender Trevoh Chalobah, Borussia Dortmund loanee Carney Chukwuemeka, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Armando Broja but on this occasion, they were reluctant to negotiate.
Discussions did not go very far, though separate sources have claimed that Kudus has also been floated to other Premier League clubs in recent weeks. Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr have the player on their radar, though Liverpool's Luis Diaz is still considered their top target.
West Ham are not under any immediate pressure to sell in relation to Premier League PSR rules but they're keen to raise funds through player sales to bolster Potter's summer transfer budget.
Kudus, a £38m capture from Ajax in 2023, hit just five goals in 35 appearances in all competitions last season. Chelsea have historic interest and made contact with the Dutch giants to sign the versatile attacker in July 2023 before he eventually moved to east London.
But at this stage, the Blues are thought to be prioritising the arrival of a right-footed left-winger after paying a £5m penalty fee to send Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United.
Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is a name of strong interest and Chelsea are ready to test the water with an opening bid, though they do not feel an agreement is essential before the Club World Cup.
Chelsea have also considered moves for Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams and Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho, who is attracting interest from Bayer Leverkusen.

Tom Brady questions Wayne Rooney's ‘work ethic' during managerial stint at Birmingham
Brady, who is a minority owner of the club, stars in a new Amazon Prime documentary series, due to air on Friday, which outlines the trials and tribulations the new ownership group, Knighthead Capital Management LLC, faced when taking over. Back in 2023, Rooney was brought in as manager two months after the new owners bought the club, replacing John Eustace with the Blues sat sixth in the Championship. Rooney was sacked 83 days later as the club dropped to 20th and were eventually relegated. In the new television series, Brady is seen questioning Rooney before the decision to sack him, with the seven-time Super Bowl winner telling colleagues: "I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic." He added: "I mean, I don't know, I don't have great instincts on that." For his part, Rooney attempted to explain his thoughts on Birmingham's problems, telling Brady that the culture surrounding the club needs to change. He said: "Why they're playing in the Championship and not the Premier League is because we've all passed a ball, kicked the ball and run, but it's a focus, concentrated for 90 minutes." After his dismissal, Rooney did not feel 13 weeks was "sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed". Once Birmingham's relegation from the second division was confirmed, Brady later put the blame on the players despite the owners hiring seven different managers in just 10 months. "Well we've already changed the coach, so it's really the players because the coach doesn't go out there and put the ball in the goal," Brady said. "They were lazy, they were entitled and when you're lazy and entitled, you don't have much of a chance to succeed. We've got to change all the people that are associated with losing, so I think this summer there's going to be a lot of people gone." Birmingham spent £30m on transfers ahead of the 2024/25 season which is a monumental sum for a League One side. The club went on to break the Football League record for most points in a season and topped the table with 111 to secure their promotion back to the Championship for the upcoming season.

Flick rates Rashford performance for Barcelona as Yamal and Lingard swap shirts
Hansi Flick praised Marcus Rashford for coming on and making an impact after Barcelona maintained their 100 per cent record in pre-season with a thumping victory over FC Seoul. The Spanish champions have been ramping up their preparations for the upcoming campaign while on tour in South Korea and strolled to a dominant 7-3 win at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Thursday. Robert Lewandowki opened the scoring before Lamine Yamal completed a brace in a tightly contested first half which ended 3-2, but the visitors showed their quality and pulled out of sight in a one-sided second period. After a brief run-out against Vissel Kobe last time out, Rashford was given 45 minutes to make a difference – and the forward seized his opportunity with both hands as he registered his first assist for the La Liga giants since joining on loan from Manchester United. With Barca holding a 6-3 lead in the closing stages, Rashford picked up the ball 20 yards out with his back to goal. In the blink of an eye, the attacker turned and found Ferran Torres with an exquisite through ball and the ex-Manchester City man made no mistake from close range. Torres made sure to credit to Rashford as he wheeled away to celebrate his second in what was a ruthless second-half display, in which Andreas Christensen and Gavi also found the net. 'Each player had 45 minutes. In the end, I'm happy,' Barcelona head coach Flick said shortly after the final whistle.. 'We had a good start in the first half and then we were a little sluggish, but we returned to a great level. 'In the second half, too, with Gavi, Ferran, Marcus… also Gerard Martin in a position that isn't his usual one.' On Gavi's best position, Flick added: 'He can play as a number six or a number eight. 'We saw him perform at the end of last season and he was at a very good level. 'Here, exactly what I've seen from Gavi is what I want to see: pushing the team forward, wearing the armband. It's good to see him like this.' There was a nice moment at the start of the second period when Rashford was brought on in place of Raphinha to rapturous applause from those Barca fans in attendance at the 66,000-capacity stadium. Rashford was smiling from ear to ear as he ran onto the field to be greeted by former Manchester United team-mate and close friend Jesse Lingard, who now captains FC Seoul. Videos taken in the tunnel after the match show Rashford and Lingard catchig up and chatting at length before they are joined by a certain Lamine Yamal. Yamal, who had earlier been pictured in conversation with Lingard on the pitch, could be seen swapping shirts with the FC Seoul skipper. More Trending After the win, Yamal took the opportunity to thank Barcelona's support who had cheered them on in Korea. 'I'm very happy. This has been my dream since I was little – to score wearing this jersey and this number. It's very special,' he said. I'm thrilled to have scored and for the team's victory Thank you so much for supporting us in every country. We're truly grateful. Hopefully, this season will be very successful and we'll win many trophies. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Bukayo Saka injury latest after Arsenal defeat to Spurs
Bukayo Saka was seen limping off the pitch after suffering an injury during Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Thursday. Spurs sealed the win through Pape Matar Sarr's impressive long-range strike on the stroke of half time after David Raya was caught off his line. Saka, meanwhile, required treatment following a challenge from Mathys Tel in the second half and was then replaced by Max Dowman in the 77th minute. But during Spurs' trophy celebrations after the game, Saka was seen noticeably limping alongside his Arsenal teammates as they headed off the pitch towards the tunnel. Mikel Arteta did not provide an update on Saka's condition after the game but insisted that Arsenal will not be taking risks with any player ahead of their friendly against Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium next Wednesday. 'He felt a little tweak,' Arteta said after the game. 'I think he tried to turn and he was pushed and he felt something muscular so we will have to assess him.' Meanwhile, Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and Kepa arrizabalaga all missed the friendly against Spurs in Hong Kong. More Trending But when asked if the defensive trio are doubts for Arsenal's Premier League opener against Manchester United on August 17, Arteta replied: 'I don't think so. 'If they evolve like they have been involved in the last few days, Gabriel Magalhaes, Calafiori and Timber, the three of them will be available.' When asked about Kepa's absence, Arteta said: 'He felt something as well in the game against Newcastle. 'I think it's a matter of days, probably. If it was the Premier League he could have played but we decided not to take a risk.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
