Trichy division realises Rs1.2 lakh as fine for railway gate violations

Speaking at the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) observed on Thursday to raise awareness on the importance of safety at railway level crossings, M S Anbalagan, divisional railway Manager (DRM) informed that the division maintains 493 level crossing gates.
Emphasizing growing concern over gate rule violations, he said that 90 cases were booked last year (Jan–Dec 2024), and 11 lakh were collected as penalties.
He stated that reckless behaviour by road users not only damages railway property but hampers train's punctuality and endangers human lives. To mitigate such risks, cautionary and statutory signboards were installed to advise road users to strictly adhere to safety norms while crossing the railway tracks.
The DRM underlined the ongoing efforts to enhance safety through the rationalization of level crossings by constructing limited use subways (LUS), road under bridges (RUBs), and road over bridges (ROBs) in collaboration with the state govt.
Anbalagan and other senior officers flagged off a mass awareness rally and the safety publicity mobile vehicle in front of Trichy Junction railway station. The rally proceeded through Central bus terminus. The team distributed safety pamphlets and educated the public on level crossing safety.
Later, a vehicle bearing safety awareness banners, along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) visited level crossing gates near Trichy Town, Srirangam, and Thiruverumbur railway stations.

Seven children rescued from suspected trafficking at Perambur railway station
CHENNAI: Seven children aged between 11 and 16 years were rescued from a suspected trafficking attempt at Perambur railway station on Wednesday. The operation was part of a month-long drive initiated by the Railway Board in the run-up to World Day against Trafficking in Persons on July 30. It was jointly carried out by Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police (GRP), Childline, and Bachpan Bachao Andolan. According to sources, six boys were found travelling with three agents on a train, while another agent was waiting at the station to receive the seventh boy. One of the three agents, who had accompanied two of the children, managed to escape from the officials. Complaints have been filed against three people in connection with the incident. All the seven children were rescued and handed over to GRP for filing a case and taking further legal action. The children have been sent to a government home. The child welfare committee will inquire with the children on Thursday.

In response to the tragic train-van collision in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district that claimed the lives of three schoolchildren and injured six others, the Indian Railways has announced a comprehensive set of safety measures aimed at enhancing vigilance and accountability at railway-level crossings nationwide. The new directives include the installation of CCTV cameras with solar-powered backups at all Level Crossing (LC) gates to enable real-time monitoring and evidence collection. In a significant policy shift, the interlocking threshold—which allows automated gate operation—will be reduced from 20,000 to 10,000 Train Vehicle Units (TVU), ensuring more gates function with automated safety systems, especially at high-speed train routes. Additionally, the Railways will randomly audit voice recordings from at least two non-interlocked gates per division every day to monitor protocol adherence. Speed breakers and warning signage at LC gates will be redesigned for improved visibility and compliance. Day after Tamil Nadu accident, Ashwini Vaishnaw directs CCTV system at all level crossings with recorders
A day after a passenger train collided with a school van at a level crossing in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district, killing three children, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Wednesday directed that a CCTV system should be provided at all level crossings along with the necessary recording systems. Along with this, the traffic volume threshold for interlocking works has been lowered to 10,000, so that more level crossings can be equipped with interlocking facilities. Officials said that Vaishnaw reviewed the critical railway safety matters, where a decision was taken to implement 11 key actions regarding the level crossings. 'Now, all LC (level crossing) gates will be covered with CCTV systems, so that such incidents can be avoided. It will be implemented in priority mode. The power supply to CCTV will be based on solar panels, battery back-up, UPS, etc in addition to commercial supply,' said a senior Railway Ministry official. The official also said that the interlocking of level crossing gates will be done in fast-track mode. 'Currently, in those level crossings, where the interlocking system is not available, the green signal to the train is given in the direction of the station master. Due to this, many times the train starts moving without the level crossing gate being closed. Thus, the risk of accidents increases. After the interlocking system is in place, the train will not get the green signal unless the level crossing gate is closed. The Minister has directed to involve PSUs of Railways for interlocking works,' said the official. Under the existing policy, the interlocking of level crossing gates was done where traffic volume or Train Vehicle Unit (TUV) was 20,000. Now this threshold has been lowered to 10,000 TVU, which will cover more level crossings for interlocking works. TUV is a key factor in determining whether a level crossing qualifies for replacement with a Road Over Bridge (ROB) or Road Under Bridge (RUB). 'All gates above 10,000 TVU will be interlocked irrespective of ROB/RUB/LHS plans. All these works will be done with the existing budget, no additional allocation has been made. For non-interlocked gates, a daily random check of voice recordings will be done, at least 2 gates per day per division. Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) will confirm that the Voice logger system is functional at all non-interlocked gates,' said the official. The decision taken in the review meeting also includes standardisation and correction of speed breakers and warning boards at all level crossing gates. 'It was also decided that a list of conflict-prone gates, where public pressures or manhandling happens, will be made and RPF/Home Guard deployment will be ensured. A 15-day safety inspection drive on level crossing gates in block sections will start from tomorrow,' said the official. According to the Railways' annual plan for 2025-25, a total of ` 706 crore has been allocated for safety works of level crossings and `7,000 crore for ROBs/RUBs. As on April 1, 2024, there were a total of 17,083 manned level crossings, of which 497 manned level crossings were eliminated up to January, 2025 in the last FY. Under the National Rail Plan, all level crossings are to be replaced with grade separators in phased manner by 2030 on routes envisaged for operation of passenger trains with speed 160-200 kmph.
