Staffing gaps, poor facilities plague Buxar railway station

Buxar: Despite its strategic and religious importance, Buxar railway station continues to suffer from acute staff shortages and inadequate infrastructure. Official records show that while nine station masters, including one station manager, are sanctioned, only four station masters and the manager are currently posted. "In comparison, Kulharia, a much smaller station, has eight station masters and Ara operates with its full quota," said a railway official. This shortfall hampers 24-hour operations, even as the station manages around 75 pairs of trains daily. In the 2024-25 financial year, Buxar earned over Rs 103 crore, ranking 12th in the East Central Railway zone and 6th in the Danapur division. Yet, key promises made during last year's DRM inspection, such as filling vacancies and air-conditioning the panel room, remain unfulfilled. Basic amenities are severely lacking. Platforms 2 and 3 have no overhead shelters, seats, or fans, exposing passengers to extreme weather. "This is not just inconvenient but humiliating," said K.K. Ojha, a daily commuter. Sanitation is poor, with garbage-strewn platforms and no functional public toilets. Outside, traffic congestion caused by unregulated e-rickshaws forces passengers to walk up to half a kilometre to board trains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Security is minimal, leading to frequent incidents of pickpocketing and mobile theft. "The absence of crowd control and security measures has made travel increasingly unsafe," said Soni Kumari, a local resident. The night-time operation of the Roti Bank, though well-meaning, has attracted beggars, intoxicated people and anti-social elements, creating an unsafe environment for travellers. Medical support is also inadequate. The lone railway medical centre between Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction and Danapur has only one doctor and minimal facilities, leaving the station unprepared for emergencies. Commuters and civil society continue to demand urgent action from railway authorities.

7,799 train passengers fined for ticketless travel in Sonepur division

Patna: Sonepur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) has recorded a collection of Rs 59,04,320 as fine and arrested 7,799 passengers for ticketless travel in a single day operation conducted on June 23, said Sonepur divisional railway manager, (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood. According to Sood, each travelling ticket examiner (TTE) in the Sonepur division achieved an exceptional daily average earning of Rs 8,137, surpassing the ECR's average of Rs 6,911 per TTE. This impressive performance marks a significant leap in both operational efficiency and revenue generation for the division, he said. Sonepur senior divisional commercial manager (senior DCM) Raushan Kumar on Wednesday told this newspaper that the large-scale drive targeted unauthorised travel on mail and express trains with a special focus on reserved coaches. "The action not only contributed to cleaner and more orderly passenger services, but also offered much needed relief to the genuine passengers in peak summer," he said, adding a positive outcome of the operation was a 15% rise in sale of unreserved tickets across the division. "Coordinated effort reflected our commitment to enhancing passenger experience while safeguarding railway revenue. The response from passengers has been largely supportive and we will continue such drives to maintain discipline and fairness in the system," Kumar said.

‘Adjust kariye', says staff as leaky VB roof leaves students drenched

Lucknow: A trip in the premium Vande Bharat Express (22415) became a tale of disappointment and trauma for a final year undergraduate of physical therapy, who was heading back to Delhi with his family, and other passengers on Monday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Travelling from Varanasi to Delhi in the C7 coach (242627), Darshil Mishra faced an unexpected downpour—not from the sky, but from the train's roof due to some fault in air conditioning. "My ordeal started as I boarded the train in Varanasi. My tablet, trousers as well as other passengers were drenched due to leaky roof. To prevent the leak, the staff switched off the AC around my berth, which was next to the entry door of the coach. Now, I and other passengers were not only drenched but continued the uncomfortable journey amid humid conditions," recounted Darshil. When Darshil raised the issue with onboard railway staff, the response was a dismissive "adjust kariye" (just adjust). Adding to the frustration, the train ticket examiner (TTE) never showed up to address the situation. "The Vande Bharat Express, touted as a symbol of modern rail travel in India, promises comfort and efficiency. However, this incident highlights serious maintenance lapses that undermine its reputation. Further even after reaching out to DRM Lucknow division social media handle, no action was taken," said Darshil, who filed a complaint in the consumer forum for a refund. Darshil is pursuing Bachelor of Physiotherapy from Ambala. After reaching Delhi, he boarded a connecting Vande Bharat Express to reach Ambala while his mother and brother alighted at Delhi, where they reside. Netizens have slammed the railways, with many calling for accountability and improved service standards. The railways is yet to issue an official statement. However, a note prepared by Northern Railway following the incident reads, "This incident could have been avoided if additional metallic washer had been wielded over the existing washer of return air filter of the air conditioning system. The incident in C7 happened due to a choked drain hole of a drip tray beneath the cooling coil." The railways has suspended V S Galhot, senior section engineer Varanasi, rake in-charge for not ensuring proper draining of condensate water through drain hole during regular maintenance.
