‘We want arrests, not statements' — ANCYL president slams SAPS amid explosive drug allegations

The Herald11 hours ago
'His role as a commissioner of police is to arrest those who do crime. We don't want him to be a pop star. If he wants to contest politics, he must come to branches of the ANC and contest. But if he wants to be a commissioner, he must arrest those who do crime. We don't want statements, we want arrests.'
Malatji also made it clear no one should be above the law, not even the police minister.
'If the minister of police is doing crime, he must be arrested. We are not a lawless country,' he said.
While Malatji's comments sparked support from some, many social media users criticised them as hasty, given the serious and unproven nature of the allegations.
Responding to the public reaction on X, Malatji doubled down.
'It's heartbreaking to learn through allegations that some leaders in our country are either working with drug lords, part of drug syndicates or protecting drug criminals,' he said.
'As someone who despises drugs, this is deeply painful. Drugs have ravaged our youth, creating unemployed and unemployable young people across South Africa.
'To hear certain leaders might be complicit in syndicates is infuriating and hurtful,' Malatji said.
'We must take a stand to clean this country and remove all drug dealers and their enablers in all corridors of power.'
Mchunu and Sibiya said the allegations levelled against them by Mkhwanazi are without merit.
President Cyril Ramaphosa described the situation as 'a matter of grave national security concern'. He pledged to outline a course of action on his return from the Brics leaders summit in Brazil.

Free State records two deaths, rescues 21 from illegal initiation school

Two deaths have been recorded in the Free State since the start of the winter initiation season, while a joint effort by the community, the Provincial Initiation Co-ordinating Committee (PICC) and the police has led to the rescue of 21 initiates from an illegal initiation school in Theunissen. One death was recorded in Botshabelo and another in Bethulie. Police are investigating the cases. The Free State co-operative governance and traditional affairs department (Cogta) confirmed the illegal initiation school has been closed and the initiates reunited with their families. 'One of the initiates has been taken to hospital for medical attention,' it said. 'In Bethulie, two male initiates received medical attention after they were found with swollen feet. The cause of their condition is still being investigated. In Vrede, Thabo Mofutsanyana district, two cases of missing initiates were reported to the police. The initiates are aged 15 and 27,' said Cogta spokesperson Zimasa Mbewu. Six criminal cases have been opened with law enforcement agencies in the province.

Police investigate 'drunk' cop in viral video

The police have launched an investigation into a viral video of a police officer allegedly under the influence of alcohol while in uniform and on duty in the North West. The video shows a group of community members confronting the police officer and accusing him of being drunk. Provincial spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said the police have seen the footage and view the allegations made seriously. 'The provincial commissioner who is on record saying that ill-discipline and intemperate behaviour by members shall not be tolerated views the video in a very serious light and has instructed the district commissioner to immediately investigate the allegations, which if true amounts not only to serious misconduct, but also a criminal offence,' Mokgwabone said. 'These allegations cannot and should not be taken lightly as they are damaging to the integrity and professional image of the SAPS, further contributing to the trust deficit between the police and the community. 'It is equally important to point out that this matter shall be investigated without fear, favour or prejudice.' Mokgwabone said preliminary investigations indicate that two members of the Patriotic Alliance and Operation Dudula, who came from Gauteng to support the group, could assist with the investigation. The police have called on the two individuals to contact the district commissioner or the provincial corporate communication and liaison to assist. 'The two possible witnesses are further advised that making and publicising information of such a serious nature without reporting it to the relevant authorities may result in them being charged for defeating or obstructing the course of justice.' Agriculture minister Steenhuisen rings warning bells on Trump tariffs

The Trump administration's "reciprocal" tariffs for several countries were announced in April after section 232 tariffs aimed at protecting US industries. However, the "reciprocal" tariffs were suspended for 90 days. Steenhuisen said the tabling comes at a critical time with the separation of the department from the rural development portfolio. He said citrus, wine, nuts and table grapes were exposed to the US tariffs and he would work to protect the exports and their producers. "More than ever, it highlights the need for urgent reform in South Africa so we can ensure our economy meets the requirements of our trading partners around the world. "I look forward to working with [ trade, industry and competition] m inister Parks Tau and others in the coming weeks to urgently seek a way through the impasse and ensure we can avoid the 30% tariff for our agriculture sector." Steenhuisen said SA agriculture stood at a crossroads of "extraordinary potential" and persistent risks such as climate change, input costs, weak infrastructure, finance access gaps and global trade shocks. He said the budget vote will introduce an agricultural digital platform, a ministerial oversight framework with biannual audit reviews. "The budget is more than a set of figures. It is a statement of intent, a commitment to build a new kind of inclusive agriculture. An agriculture that is youth-driven, science-based, climate smart and, most importantly, inclusive." The budget vote includes: Business Times
